Are they any good? I'm looking to get one but I don't really know anything about them.
They look like they're comfortable and easy to remove, but you might as well get that with chest rigs.
Is it just a waste of money or are there actually any advantages besides looking tacticool as fuck?

The one advantage that I could see with them is that they are easy to don and doff as you said. Other than that, I'm sure battle belts and chest rigs are better.

could you not wear a bandoleer like a necklace with the mags in the middle of your chest, instead of slung over one shoulder and under the other?

Yeah, but I like the idea of unclipping one buckle and throwing it down without having to drag it over your head, and I want a backpanel that doesn't make the rig more difficult or time consuming to remove.
