>Albertafag here, just shot a gun for the first time two days ago, looking into getting a brush gun for camping as here we have problems with bear and cat as best camping time is spring and fall.
>Originally, sks looked good, not knowing caliber was pretty weak and barely legal to hunt with, then was recommended to a Marlin 30-30.
> Marlin looked good, but seems like a questionable choice since hits to the hammer can cause it to fire and it seems like the tubular mag+ centerfire rounds are a shitty combination for a gun that might see some abuse. Not sure if these guns are actually deemed unreliable in this situation, partial to my asking.
>Which brings me to my next choice- 12g mossberg 500, smooth bore.
>It looks promising, I just wanted your collective opinion. Rifled slugs can hunt well through dense brush, seems sturdy and resistant to heavy shock. 12g slug apparently can drop anything in north America and is easy to find.
>Is there anything I should look for if the mossberg is a good choice? I don't care for ranged shooting past 100yards, I would like to mount a light and laser to the sides of it, nothing else.
>TL;DR- Mossberg 500 any good for north camping defense and hunting.
Sounds like you've got it figured out

Mossman will remove bear, go for it.

Do I?
Is there a specific choke I should opt for when shooting rifled slugs optimally?
Is there any main differences in shell length that I should choose? Any specific slug the mossberg would "like"?
>>32858354
Yep pretty much. However a maverick 88 is pretty much a cheaper mossberg 500. Any of the Chinese Remington clones are really good to, ie grizzlies and such.

To add to my post, also what barrel length are you liking for?
>>32858354
That or try your hand at something in .45-70
>>32858588
I don't know much about barrel length differences. What would you suggest?
>>32858595
Was earlier decided against as its daaaamn expensive.

I don't mind paying for possibly better quality considering it's purpose.
Mossy 500 is a good choice. Really can't go wrong and also gives you accessory options abound. I'd recommend some sort of weapon mounted light to go with it.

My friend also recommended the Remington 870, does /k/ have a preference?
