I've been looking for a precision rifle. I don't go to the range as much as I'd like to anymore unfortunately, and my AR-15 solely remains a part of my kit in the the eventuality of a national crisis here in the US. I've never done precision shooting before besides doing texas ranges that extended to 1500 meters, where I hit a vehicle sized target at 1230 meters using an .50 M2HB. I've shot 5.56 tracers out to ranges of around 800 meters and it just feels underwhelming to me. I don't believe .223 is the most ethical choice for hunting larger game at a distance, too much lee-way to miss without a proper setup.

Preferably looking for a .308 or .30-06 as it is easy to find these calibers and they're good for all around general purpose, fitting that philosophy of 'one shot, one kill' instead of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal by making it scamper to it's death as it bleeds out. I'd prefer if the rifle didn't go over $2,000 and is relatively accurate. Aesthetic and weight is a non-factor to me, I've had to carry big ugly dumb guns.

Well we're far past the dark ages of winter warfare and I also already had one of those. It was a VKT M39. I just didn't want to ruin it with a bipod and scope mount. 7.62x54r steelcase isn't really 'matchgrade', and all that's available is soft point and not hollowpoint.

Tikka T3x CTR

Any heavy barreled varmint type bolt action from a good manufacturer will suit you well as a first long range rifle when coupled with a good scope and the knowledge to use them. Tikka T3 are a popular choice, good aftermarket, good variety of calibers and a good quality rifle.

I haven't seen that image posted in probably 5-7 years.

I'd say get a savage in .308 with vortex optic.
That's what I'll be getting when I eventually start hunting again.

Go for.308 or .300 WIN mag. Ruger American Rifle is good. Don't discount the FAL though. And Tikka has some good shit too, be sure to check them out.

You would have to find one first.
Also a Springfield A4 is easier.

Mauser m98 made in the current years
Gibbs springfield 1903 a4
FN spr a5m xp
AI at 308
Steyr ssg 08

Blaser r8 professional success

It does vary by stock, the hogue and magpul hunter make it perfectly viable. That said quite a few of the standard stock options require work to match a tikka or savage out of the box so for rem 700 learn your shit before buying

tikka or sako for extra $$$
