Hey /k/ommandos, looking to get a couple of rifles as my first weapons. The ones I'm looking at are both Lithgows; an LA101 .22LR and a LA102 .308WIN. Not exactly the most affordable, but they seem to have a really good reputations, as well as being locally made.

Orinally wanted to get a Remington 700 SPS Tactical in .223REM, but I thought both having a .22LR for plinking and varminting as well as having a .308WIN for longer range paper punching and bigger game (pretty much can take down anything in Australia) would be a better choice.

What do guys think of these two?

.22 - get a cz 452 or 455
223, 243 or 308 - get a tika t3

No real point buying lithgow unless you want be super patriotic.

>CZ 452, 455
I've only had a quick glance at the CZs, I'll research them more.

>super patriotic
Isn't it supporting local businesses a nice bonus too?

>Tikka T3
I like the Tikkas, but they seem about the same price as the Lithgows for lesser build quality. Any particular reason why you prefer them? At least the Remingtons are a fair bit more affordable.

If you are a regular around Belmont then I could bring my LA102 308 on Sunday - doing IPSC at 11

South Australia mate. I've finger fucked an LA101 and it feel good man. I'd imagine thew LA102 is just a beefier version.

Also, how is it shooting? No issues or quirks with it?

It is front heavy if you're standing to fire and she has a real kick to her when prone.

Honestly I bought it because I had a PTA that was expiring (while waiting for the RPR) and I'm an impatient fuck.

I now have both the LA102 and the RPR in 308.

Given the choice of the LA102 and the RPR I always pick the RPR.

If I was going to do the compulsive purchase over again I would get the Tikka T3. There is simply more aftermarket options for it, better selection of setups and so forth. The Lithgow is nice but once it's out of the box there is little more you can do to it.

Spare parts is a great example too. I need a replacement recoil pad and Lithgow refer you to OSA to find a dealer. 3 months later and there are still no spares. Admittedly I did get onto a guy at the factory who is helping now but if you needed a Tikka part it would have been a 5 minute job.
>>
>>32856365
How much more different is it to bed with a Tikka compatible stock? It accepts Tikka mags, so I would assume it wouldn't take much more effort to modify one for a Lithgow.

Also, noticed you say you prefer the RPR, but I plan to hunt more with the LA102 and paper punch with the LA101. The RPR is just a bit too much to carry around for long hours for days at at a time, isn't it?.
>>
>>32855895
a .308 as a first centerfire will get you into some bad habits.
personally is i was redoing my first gun purchase's i would get a .223 with a 1 in 8 twist .

RPR vs LA102
>>
>>32856391
>>32856365
Also, what's the reason for picking the RPR over the LA102?
>>
>>32856262
He's right, get an adler while its still a Class A firearm. They're fun.

>>32856242
i'd be more inclined if it was Australian owned. Its a bit of a meh point for me.

The CZ is a decent .22 it will shoot better than you can. There's a reason why everyone has one.

You wont go wrong buying the lithgow 308 over a tikka but I wouldn't say that Tikka is of a lesser build quality. There is also more after market support (at the moment) in terms of mags etc for the tikka. You may want to take that in to consideration too.

You've said that you're living in SA so you may want to re-think jumping up to a 308 straight away for your first centrefire rifle. They're making it very hard now to buy Class B firearms and require you to write a detailed explanation as to why you need that firearm.

If you jump to a 308 straight away you might find it difficult to justify other calibers. Like you said, 308 will basically kill everything in Australia. Theres no justification then to easily get other calibers for hunting.

If I were you I'd step your way up from 223 (reason foxes) then 243 (certain species of deer) and then 308 (camel) etc etc Play their game.

Also make sure you join a club at some point as it then gives you unlimited reasons to buy certain funs.

Take this from a South Aussie

DESU I don't know and it would be an interesting exercise.

Yes it does take the T3 mags but the previous Lithgow models had also used other mags instead of their own design. I did run into an issue with getting a muzzle break. The LA102 uses an M14 variant and the only place I could get a break so suit was the Czech Republic.

Oh there's a big quirk, feeding soft point ammo is terrible. The feed ramp angle is too shallow and the soft lead catches and jams. FMJ and the S&B stepped ammo is OK.

- PMAGS
- Compatible with AR stocks and grips and fore ends
- It actually shoots decent
- Its also banned in fudd states like NSW and WA so you can laugh at them
- TACTICOOOL
>>
>>32856402

I'm >>32856391, >>32856418 & >>32856365; not >>32856428

- I like a pistol grip (can be added to a Tikka)
- I can adjust the stock length and heights on the fly (so switching standing, sitting & prone is consistent)
- RPR handles recoil like a dream.
- Mags are cheap

HOWEVER

- RPR is heavy as fuck in comparison
- It does not sling comfortably for carry.

The LA102 would be the choice to carry all day for hunting but I am a stubborn fuck and would still lug muh ruger around

>>32856442
Just lift more and the heavy issue becomes less of an issue :P

Thanks m8s. I'll take all this into consideration. I do have a couple of uncles that have farms and will most likely be doing the majority of shooting there.
>>
>>32856414
Hey SA-anon. Just curious about 308's being harder to get. Here in Qld, once we are a 'sports shooter' with the SSAA then we do have to justify why we need a B instead of an A but the template is:

"To effectively participate and compete in centerfire competitions, I am required to own and maintain a suitable firearm. In regards to the selection of a .308, I am participating competitions with distances in excess of 300m and as such a lower calibre is not suitable"

>>32856449
Will all the crap I carry I'm turning into one of the old guys you see with trolleys @ the range.
>>
>>32856449
>>32856474
I personally don't have an aversion to lifting, but out on a hunting trip, the less, the better imho.

its about the same in SA as what you have listed.

Its not any harder to get a 308 over a 223. but if your only reason is to buy a 308 for hunting you may want to think about buying lower calibers first.

Lets say my reason for a 308 is hunting deer and its my first centrefire. The next time I go to buy a 223 for fox shooting SAPOL may go and say you've already got a 308 that will kill foxes just fine. PTA rejected you dont need a 223.

The reports i've heard are mixed for pta's being rejected or accepted. I'm not saying everyones case is going to be the same but if I were the new funs anon I would plan my purchases carefully if I was interested in buying more than one gun.

>>32856533
That's crazy. I'm originally from NSW and basically I'll stay in Queensland just because half my crap is prohibited there.

Having Cleavers 30 minutes away is cool too & saves on postage.

I miss pre-1996 Australia...
