I was attacked by a very aggressive sheet of paper once. I filled it full of holes.

Got saved from getting mugged two different times in NC and GA. Didn't brandish but made it obvious I was armed and looked them straight in the eyes. In NC it was two white dudes that attempted to block me from leaving a office when I was in my car. In GA two black dudes that started walking up as I was getting in my car. Both times the guys changed their mind before things escalated.

An observant person can read body language.
In NC the guys had been "arguing" in a choke point until I approached, then they suddenly stopped and started walking directly for my car. That's when I got my gun in hand and stared them down. I'm sure they saw me reach under my seat and pull something out then just look at them. That's when they turned and walked away.
In GA I had just walked out of a gas station and sat in my car. As I shut my door the two got out of theirs and started walking directly towards my car instead of the doors to the gas station. I pulled my pistol and kept it under the door window. Keeping eye contact. They then turned and went into the store.
Some would argue I didn't know their intentions, but when you've seen it go down enough you can read it in how they acted, moved, etc.
