If it looks stupid, but it works, it ain't stupid.

Considering the technology they had to work with in 1945 it's not bad, all things start out as a lot more cumbersome and not perfectly optimized and as time goes on they figure out how to make something that works the same, or better, only more efficiently, that's how new technology works.
