I am currently carrying pic related. I didn't know if I'd carry everyday, so I went for a cheap gun. It's time for an upgrade. I like the size, and would actually be OK with something larger. I like 9mm, I like double stack. I dislike the play between parts and the overall cheapness. I carry at 5 o'clock.

There are some good options out there, but it mainly boils down to how it feels in hand, price point, holster availability, aftermarket parts, and ultimately reliability. I wouldn't recommend any single manufacturer, but I would recommend going to your LGS and fingering as many choices as possible. Doing some research wouldn't hurt either.

XDS 45 w/ laser. Alien Gear makes a holster for it, and it conceals insanely well, while still holding 7+1 or 5+1 depending on how much I want to worry about printing. You can also modify 1911 magazines for it, so you can carry a backup 10 rounder if you're that guy.

What position you carry in will be different for most depending on your pistol, body shape and standard clothing. I typically carry IWB appendix anymore, but I was carrying 4'Oclock OWB at first. As far as a "get home" setup, I recommend setting up a decent daypack.
In my pants I carry; a knife, a pen, my wallet, a small notebook, a cheap casio watch, my keys, a burner phone, a wifi-only smartphone and my CC (no spare magazines yet, I will fix that this weekend)
In my backpack, I carry spare clothing, a larger notebook, emergency food, a decent first aid kit with water purification tablets, an eat'n tool, some paracord, lighters, spare knives, a multi-tool, water bottles, USB storage devices, a cell phone charger, a comb etc.
