5.56 in my hands on my way between shooting spots because of higher general mag capacity and ease of use at closer ranges.
7.62 once I get to my spot because of reach and power.

Always thought 5.56 might be better in war simply because of its lack of immediate death factor. What about the old injure one, take three out of a battle? Not saying 7.62 wouldn't do this but cost is also a factor. 5.56 is cheaper and gets job done.

Penetration differences between the two are very dependent on what you are shooting, and at what range.
556 will out penetrate almost normal ammo up to 54r on hardened steel within 100 yards. And out penetrates 762 and 545 easily on softer steel too.
762 happens to be better at brute force damage on brittle stuff like bricks, breaking them up.
