Red pill me on the SKS as I have never seen one or fired one.

Does it predate the AK? Is the AK based off the SKS?

SKS doesn't have a detachable magazine?
It is fixed and rounds are fed downward into the attached magazine from stripper clips? I have seen some SKS with ten round affixed magazines and some that look like 30 round? Is it still attached or is it a detachable magazine mod?

Help a /k/ ommando out please.

I want to buy a cheap one to bury with some ammo indawoods but everywhere seems sold out.
>>
>>
>>32844155

That's a Mosin Nagant in that picture not an SKS.

>Does it predate the AK?

Yes, by a few years. They both use the same ammunition.

>SKS doesn't have a detachable magazine?

Generally speaking no, unless its been modified. It uses clips.

>It is fixed and rounds are fed downward into the attached magazine from stripper clips?

The rounds are loaded from the top. They are fed upward by the weapon's action.

>I have seen some SKS with ten round affixed magazines and some that look like 30 round? Is it still attached or is it a detachable magazine mod?

Both 30 round stripper clips and detachable magazine modifications exist, so its hard to say for sure; but if it had a star on the side of the magazine well then it was using stripper clips.

Honsetly dude, just read the wikipedia article.
>>
>>32844155
>does it predate the AK
>Is the AK based off the SKS
Wikipedia is your friend here.

>SKS doesn't have a detachable magazine?
Not in its stock form, no. Traditionally it has a fixed magazine which is fed via stripper clips, and takes upwards to 10 rounds. It can be modified to accept a 30 round mag, depending on what you're looking for.

As for price, it depends where you are. In the US it seems that prices vary between $400 to $600 USD for most Chinese and Russian SKS. If you're a Canuck, prices drop to about $150 USD.
>>
>Is the AK based off the SKS?

No the AK is loosely based off the German Sturmgewher
>>
Thanks senpai.
Those prices seem steep.
Why are the SKS's so expensive? Did the supply dry up? No more being imported into the U.S.?
>>
>>32844214

While I don't know the specifics, its been mostly due to import laws between Russia and the USA vs the import laws between Russia and Canada. Whether those import laws will change now that President Trump is in power, who knows, but at the moment the price is higher.

That said, if what >>32844271 says is true, if you look in the right spots you could probably find a half decent one for a cheaper price. Just depends on your luck and what's available in the area.
>>
OP you are late to the SKS party by a couple decades. In the eighties they were $80-100, nineties they were $150-200, 2000's they were around $250, now they are $300-450. This pricing is for the most common Chinese sks rifles. The Russian rifles are 10-20% more. Yugo rifles were a little cheaper.

I am in my thirties so this is based on my dad's experience and mine. He bought me a brand new factory /26\ spike bayonet rifle for $75 when I was a little kid. First center fire rifle.

The others on the board have covered the basics. I've had a few of them and not one has liked the aftermarket 20-30 round mags. Don't try to make it into an AK. For the same money you can just get a WASR AK and have cheap mags that work.

Basically they are great if you are trying to get something unique. If you want a shtf rifle or whatever just get the AK or even an AR.

The sks shares a common action with the STG, tilting bolt, whereas the AK is completely different, being a rotating bolt firearm. The AK is shaped a bit like the STG, but that's about all they have in common.

>>32844246
Why do people want to buy an SKS with a detachable magazine when you can get an AK for the same price? At this point, SKS's are really only viable for the coolness/historical value unless you're Canadian.

That was my question. I own a Norinco MAK-90 AK that I love to fucking death, and I wanted to get an SKS to see what makes them so special.

Is the SKS more accurate?
What is the benefit of an SKS over an AK?
Lighter weight?
A scout rifle versus a battle rifle?
>>
>>32855160
SKS are fun to shoot and a neat little package. I like shooting mine more than my AK. They used to be cheap, too.
But the AK replaced the SKS for good reason. Any advantages to the SKS, such as marginally higher muzzle velocity, are far outweighed by the advantages the AK bring to the table. It's the superior weapon in almost all respects.
>>
>>32845427
I'm pretty sure that was a poacher's gun.
>>
I live in CA and not a lot of storage space. I'd like to get one rifle. I'm not really interested in SHTF scenarios. What's the current best balance between price (including price of ammo), reliability and general fun? Down for getting wood if that's the answer.

Actual africans, from actual Africa, are pretty much all bro-tier. Maybe its the shitty living conditions, maybe its the homogenous race, maybe its the fact that they shipped half of the unruly to the americas.

America has a way of deforming every culture that sets foot in it. Spaniards turned into either wetbacks or cartel thugs. Italians turned into whatever the fuck guidos are. Perfectly good africans kill eachother on the streets and walk around half naked shaking guns. Fuck, even the british. They spawned normal americans, and then they devolved into overprotective soccer moms and deadbeat obese drunks.

I dont know how you guys do it. Its like a fucking cursed continent.

There was a Chinese modernized SKS that took detachable 30 round box magazines, but I hear they are unreliable. I think Tapco or someone made a kit to use AK magazines.

Check out the archangel 35rd SKS mag if you are looking for detachable. The SKS mag release is clumsy for 30 round mag, since it was intended to drop the floor out of the 10 round mag. The archangel has a lever on the mag itself to bypass the release. It has really worked well, others have had good luck from what I have read.

If you're in Canada there's no better rifle for the money.

>>
>>32865435
It's an SKS-M or SKS-D.

Unless you have a boner for the aesthetics of an SKS the AK is a better rifle. Lighter, more modular, mag fed, and equally as accurate (especially veprs). They're not inherently more accurate, it's just more shootable (typically longer sight radius, heavier, more comfy to shoot from a bench position). The SKS is still a good range or backup rifle. It'd be fucking blasphemy to bury a nice one innawoods. Anything you choose to cache should be a beat up POS that's nearing the end of its service life anyway. Go with a shitty Yugo or Chinese.
>>
>>32866348
It's still a really great rifle, even if you are in America. I think it's way more fun to shoot than my ar-15. I know everyone will say that the ar is "better", but does that really matter when it's just getting used at the range?
