Pros and cons of joining the Air Force
>>
>>32844068
Pros - You're in the Air Force.
Cons - You're in the Air Force.
>>
Pros
>comfiest branch that can still call itself military
>get paid extra to live in Army quarters kind of comfy
>if you're smart and pick a job with certifications/ something that easily transfers into civilian world(working on planes, etc), very easy resume builder into a good job

Cons
>just like everywhere else, competency is a luxury
>you're still a slave to the govt, like it or not

And if you're really smart, you'll go in as an officer, not just enlist
>>
>>32844068
>pros
>cushy, easy, won't die

>cons
>beauracracy and having to deal the barely coherent grunts and yells of marines that only know how to say "muh chairforce"

If you want to join the military but don't mind doing something boring as fuck just go USAF
>>
Don't go into maintenance.
>>
>>32844084
FPBP
>>
>>32844361
Surely ALL jobs in the airforce cant be boring? What branch/jobs are more exciting? I get bored easily.
>>
I work aircraft maintenance if you pick anything in maintenance it's a lot like /b/ everyone talks shit on each other. Also your always waisting time on age or others and most of all when your doing something that makes the job easier your fucked by quality assurance. But I love it
>>
Also in maintenance if your a 3 level and your on swing shift your life will suck until late you know your shit so study up on cdcs and tech data but don't act like you know everything or it'll bite you in the ass
>>
>>32844068
Con: Minot

Air Force is also increasingly full of fundie retards who spew shit about God while you're just trying to fill out fucking forms, and you can't tell him to fuck off because for some reason he's an officer flying the fucking desk
>>

Marines would do you good. Maybe getting shot at will teach you the value of being able to sit on your ass 90% of the time.

awful B8

Security Forces is where the air force sends the dumbest of the dumb. Only about 1/1000 are mentally competent enough to tie their shoes, the rest are stealing oxygen. They love to claim how they are the "infantry of the air force" yet all they do is guard airplanes and check ID's at chow halls. It's the only MP job in the DoD where you can be retarded. Stay away from that job as if your life depends on it, unless you have autism and want to be awful at using firearms, then go for it.
>>
Going in as TACP, wish me luck lads.
>>
>>32846285

>awful at using firearms

i am terrible at shooting but they make me look good lol

Welcome to Security Forces. May God have mercy on your soul.
>>
>>32844068
My brother is a crew chief for the c-130, quicker boot camp and better food. He told me that the air force has the best food of any branch and his skill is protected. Instructors said they had to do repairs in the field on a c-130 and had 30 soldiers protect 1 crew chief. He will make great money too working on base and can leave at any time and work on any large jets. He also got a $20,000 sign on bonus. If you join then join for a skill you can carry on with after.
>>
>>32844095
>Hardship stipend
LOL that shit made my dad laugh his ass off when he was stationed in Korea prior to Gulf War 1. He made as much as a captain in the Army as a first lieutenant in the Air Force because the Air Force declared all Army garrison barracks as "substandard".

Glad that meme is still alive and well

So, guess this is a good place to ask this.

I’m looking to go into the USAF through the OTS route. I graduated with an engineering degree 2 years ago and have been working at an engineering firm since then.
But I don’t want to enter the military and do anything resembling civilian work. I want to be an active combatant.

So far it looks like the Air Force is the most limited in terms of such roles. Like CROs and STOs are the only ones that jump out at me.
And if PJ’s are SEAL-tier in terms of requirements, it would be arrogant to assume I’m going to make it there.

Got perfect on the Critical Reading and Math sections of the SAT and PSAT, respectively, so I think I shouldn’t have too hard a time with the ASVAB.

So I guess my real question is this: assuming test scores aren’t a limiting factor, what are some USAF jobs that y’all would recommend to a 25-year-old /k/ommando who wants to fight? Preferably combat arms.

Is it much too late to look into being a pilot? I’m 6’4”, so that might exclude me from several kinds of aircraft anyway.

>inb4 REDHORSE
>>
What branch/job do I get the best chance to travel somewhere cool?
>>
>>32845493
Ayyyyy. I'm in guam with some of your people right now man.
>>32846153
We're you with the couple that were out here?
>>32846198
That's be because you were a crew chief like a retard.
>>32845230
>wasting time on age
Fellow 2a7x1??
>>
>>32845493
You in Abilene, by chance
>>
>>32846678
Pretty sure the height limit is 6ft 5in so you're good, need to apply soon since the age limit is like 28.

If you did well in school it shouldn't be too hard, but I have heard that OTS really likes to select prior-enlisted for rated slots.

Talk to an officer recruiter about getting a pilot slot. Literally no harm in trying.
>>
>>32845492

Special Forces and Special Tactics are basically SOF for smart people. SEALS and Rangers for people who think it'd be kewl to CoD IRL.
>>
>>32847141
Where do you want to go?

Navy if you don't know; you may visit a lot of places while underway.
If there's a specific country you want to see Army lets you reenlist for choice of station, not sure about other branches..

>Army: Germany, South Korea, Japan, Italy, Kuwait, Kosovo, Guantanamo, and if you're lucky South America
>Marines: Germany, Japan; also see Navy
>Navy: Bahrain, Japan, Italy, Spain, Kuwait, Guantanamo; also visit many other ports worldwide
>Air Force: Guam, Germany, Japan, UK, Qatar, Kuwait, South Korea, Turkey, Greenland
>>
>>32847141

You ever look at the Foreign Service? The military is good if that's what you want to do, but if you just want to live and work abroad for America you can work for the State Department.

>>

Maintenance
>>
>>32847141
Wherever the fuck they are currently operating or need you.

Same rule applies for special forces and up.
>>
>>32844578
Go into Maintenance if you are a genuine gearhead. It's not hard work unless you are a pussy, and I found it interesting and satisfying.

OV-10 & F-4 Comm/Nav, later F-16 engines and crew chief here.

BTW QA didn't fuck with me because I bothered to know my shit. For example I had a variety of special tools approved locally by making them myself at civilianbros machine shop then submitting the actual sample to QA for approval. Then I got my civilianbros to produce them and sell via government credit card since Fab Flight didn't want to fuck with making those and other local man tools due to workload.

Avoid SF, any Admin job unless you are fluent in Ebonics, and Transportation (work on things that fly and live well, work on wheely things and get sent to work with the Army...)

Medical fields are best if you are interested in quality of life and shitload of civilian job opportunities.

Exactly why I envy them. C5 crew chief stuck me at the worst enroute base. Now I work 17s
>>
>>32851073
This, if I could do it all again I'd go enlisted aircrew. I tried to cross train, but my window was the year they cancelled all cross training for budget cuts, couldn't BOP cause shredded out to single airframe with only two base options, so I got the fuck out.

All dat sweet welfare for doing nothing dangerous at all ( outside of special forces)
Travel ect the usual military shit

Honestly I wish I went army.
>>
>>32851990
Yes.

>>32852659
Truth, and I've never met a retiree that was the least bit sorry they stayed in.

The minor annoyances of AF life are more than compensated for by your deferred compensation in retirement.

Some people are too high strung even for the Air Force, but no loss if they leave because their departure promotes someone else.
>>
>>32852830
>Honestly I wish I went army.

You can always go Army. Switching services is common. You may not find the Army to be what you expect. My AF recruiter told me he sent his ASVAB low scorers to the other services whose recruiters were glad to get them. Fast forward about fifteen years later when my peers were recruiting to homestead prior to retirement and they dif the same thing. It's not a joke.

People in groups suck to work with sometimes, but if that group has to include whatever is warm and breathing then standards must adapt.

Be careful what you wish for.

Honestly the AF has treated me pretty damn well. Air Traffic Control is pretty tough to make it in, but once you do life is fucking good. Rarely work 8 hours a day.

If I get out I'd get payed mad cash for the same job I'm doing now, except it's easier.

I've been saving 500 a paycheck for a while now so I'm up to 31 grand in savings. I live off base now and just got a roommate, so the 900 bucks a month extra I get for living off base (BAH) just gets saved.

Got a year and a half before I get out and try to finish school. Hoping to try to come back as an officer, ideally as a pilot.

I'll leave the Air force as a 24 year old with zero debt, 2 years of free school and like 55grand in the bank. Can't complain to be honest. Best choice I've ever made. (All though I didn't really have any choices left after my terribad high school grades)

Pros: Enlisted Chairforx live better than Army & Marine Officers. Very cool bunch of people. They have a lot of autism level brainiacs due to missiles, space ships, and aircraft systems that might as well be space ships.

Cons: You are subject to a sometimes mindless government bureaucracy, may get sent someplace extremely hot or extremely cold. Extremely remote deployments.

If smart, can into maths, and possess degree go pilot. They are the royalty...every thing supports them.

If you are very smart but no degrees go EOD, Combat Controller, or Para Rescue.

If a mere mortal and you want a practical career skill and no chance of combat type activity then loadmaster, and are chief are cool.

Maintenance, supply, security forces are kinda meh but they are not bad jobs...

Can someone with real experience in the Air Force give me a serious rundown on security forces?

I have an interest in working in DEA, FBI, Sheriff, State dep, etc later on down the road and I think that going into the Military Working Dogs occupation would be a great experience as well as would put money in my pocket to help pay off my debts and allow me to go back to school to finish my education (currently have ADJU associates, thinking of going for Homeland Security with specialization in counter-terrorism). I plan to stay in for 20 years and retire with full benefits regardless of what branch or job i choose.

Thank you for any honest advice you choose to share.

Mwd is basically the only thing that can get you into any job on the outside.

You would need to go in straight leg security forces and eat regular security forces shit on a gate (most likely) while spending your spare time at the kennels running errands for the kennel master until they sign your letter of recommendation (they'll make you write it)

There are contractors that hire k9 troops i hear, but i never looked into it because im not one of them
