I remember seeing a documentary about defectors living in the south. One of them was a tank commander who used to drive T-34s and thought they were modern and effective tanks.

I think perhaps bringbacks? There are some Nork SKS rifles that were brought back from Vietnam. That Type 70 Ian did a video on, who knows. I think the Nork TT that was on GB was a nam bringback or maybe grenada or panama. Nork equipment was captured there to my understanding.

It's not stupidity, it's information control. This is what he was told all his life, and he never saw any reason to believe otherwise. He probably had no experience with other tanks besides the T-34 and even if he did he might not have been educated enough to understand why they were better. For all we know he was taught that the differences between a T-34 and T-72 are purely cosmetic, don't worry about it.

The people of North Korea are not stupid, but they have been purposefully misinformed so completely and for so long that they are almost totally disassociated with reality at this point. Some of them have access to outside information and have some idea that what they're being told isn't the absolute truth, but even then it's difficult to grasp that your entire worldview is a complete lie and everything you've ever believed is a constructed falsehood.

Their arty ammo seems to be mostly Soviet leftovers, been sitting in a shed for decades. When they shelled that one island EOD teams found that roughly half the shots fired were duds that just buried themselves in the ground and didn't detonate.
