I cut a big hammer out of a downed tree. Pretty heavy. Gonna wrap the handle where it meets the head in copper, need to trim a bit off one side for balance. Haven't decided whether to skin it or not, probably will so I can burn a design into it.

Thoughts? Anyone done anything similar?

I've also been working on a PVC shortbow, and been straightening wood trimmings for arrow staves. Gonna cut my head's out of broken glass, and got a bag of chicken feathers for fletchings.

I've also been working a piece of black walnut for a wooden bow. Got a piece of cedar, but I hear it's too soft.

your gonna have to wrap some bands around the head to prevent it splitting as it dries
>>
>>32834203
I've got a few dead oaks in my parent's yard I just had an idea for thanks OP. Also cover your outlets in an area with water.
>>
>>32834219
Wax or paint would be better.

>>32834203

Just like, buy a sledge hammer from bunnings (Dont know what the american counter part is) or something dude
>>
>>32834269
At least you have a plethora of clean clothes.
>>

>So cover the ends, even if I strip it?
yes cover the ends, wood drys from the ends. Stripping the bark off has no effect on how fast it dries. I would also suggest once it dries to rub it with linseed oil once a week for a month, then once a month for a year and then once a year for a few years.
>>
What kind of tree? It's possible that thing is just gonna break the moment you hit something with it
>>
>>32834298
Right?
Nowhere to put em though
>>
>>32834314
Maybe, I whomped a few big rocks with it, football sized sandstone.
>>
>>32834320

>Chester drawers
>>
>>32834393
lol I say it because my Spanish teacher in high school told me people from Tennessee speak English worse than Mexicans. Appalacians call it a Chester drawers. Mexicans call it a vestidor.
>>
>>32834413
I'm from Central Appalachia, people here are so dumb. A lot of them, anyway. Really, the coolest people I know either moved here from elsewhere, or moved elsewhere.
>>
>>32834203
You live like shit. Holy shit clean up that garbage
>>
>>32834212
Aged cedar makes great arrow shafts. Exactly blades or modified utility blades make good points. 1/4" or 3/8" hex nuts are good for adding weight to arrow tip if bow is powerful enough to push them. I used to hunt squirrels with nut tipped arrows. Called them "nutters".
>>
>>32834873
What's garbage, bruh
>>
>>32835258
>Nutters
I lol'd
I'll be doing that

My PVC bow lifts a cinderblock at 36 inches or so. I think that makes it around a 40lb draw. Planning on putting a fiberglass core in it, but for now it's hollow.
>>
Cool, so you brought a log inside.
I doubt it's sturdy enough on its own.
>>
>>32835700
Nice dubs
And you'd be surprised
I whomped a few rocks out of the air and they just exploded. Threw shrapnel all over the hillside.

The branch held my weight before I cut it out.
>>
>>32834302
Boiled linseed oil, not the raw stuff. And cut it 50/50 with turpentine. The real stuff, not that turp substitute crap.

Perl the bark now, while it's still wet. It comes off easier. Use a butterknife to slip it off without marring the wood underneath.

Don't use sandpaper for smoothing. Tidy up rough spots with a sharp, flexible knife.
>>
>>32835729
Thanks for the insight, I'll skin it today. Probably seal the ends, too.

I'll put up a pic if the thread is still here.
This board seems to move slow enough for it to actually be useful.

>>32834203
Clean you goddamn house dude
>>
>>32834203
So...

...you're literally carrying around a stick.

My dog does that a lot.

>Tennessee speak English worse than Mexicans
yeah, thats a common thing. We teach immigrants proper english. While native english is skewed with deep rooted accents and vernacular.

Same thing for pretty much all languages.
