Firsts for medical discussion.

Disinfecting wipes? What for? Every single combat wound is by default infected. Bullet wounds will bring in remnants of your fatigues, not to mention crawling on the ground after being shot. Not to mention artillery and grenade related shrapnel and fragments - there will be a dozen tiny wounds, and not one of them will be clean, that I can promise you. For the same reason I'll question the need for gloves; your patient is already filled with shit when he's fucked up by default. I carry them, but that's honestly just out of paranoia of my patient having something contagious in his bloodstream.

And what do we need a C-collar for? No IFAK is going to fit one, even combat life saver bags would have trouble fitting them. While I would carry one myself in a medical backpack, I personally wouldn't even blame someone who didn't, due to the amount of space it takes even when folded down.

"don't pack an IFAK without training yourself on all contents"

Why not? While training is vital indeed, you should carry everything needed regardless: not for your own use, but so the medic fixing you up and stabilizing you can use your supplies, instead of his own.

And loose hemostat, again, I'm going to question denying it. Treating wounds is not that difficult, or, specifically, stopping bleeding. Someone ought to make a flowchart of this:
>Push on the wound
>If blood does not seep through when you push it, apply pressure bandage
>If blood does seep through when you push, apply tourniquet
>If blood does seep through when you push, but wound is not on an extremity, apply hemostatic powder

Just my two cents as a (conscript) medical NCO and a (quitting) paramedic student.

Also, as an addition, quoting my previous posts, if someone wants to peer-review them:

Thanks to you anon that made suggestions
>>
>>32829159
The pictures won't load :^(
I see what you're talking about, though. I would get whichever one suits how you're gonna set up the rest of your gear the best. Also keep in mind you don't wanna be carting around rows and rows of mags on your front. I draw the line at 2x3 on the front. Some people draw it at 1x3. Anymore than two rows of 5.56 is excessive. So chest rigs with two 5.56 mags and a pistol mag on the front HSGI taco style is fine because no plate. But if you throw that on a PC then it becomes way too bulky.
>>
>>32829260
for smaller wounds. my IFAK isnt just a gunshot trauma kit.

c-collar is more for a medic trauma bag, just nice to have, never know what will happen, and i wrote it from a provider standpoint, c-collar isnt really needed in an IFAK

>Why not? While training is vital indeed, you should carry everything needed regardless: not for your own use, but so the medic fixing you up and stabilizing you can use your supplies, instead of his own.

because most of the people on here aren't going to have a medic, if they do, then they should add the advanced autism section to their kit.

>>
Can anyone with a Ferro slickster comment on how they fit? I want a large because I'm not a twink, but only mediums are ever available.

Site says that sizing is based on plate. Should I just go with the medium and have a slightly smaller plate?

>>
So i finally got a OD buttbag for my alice gear but I don't know what to put in it. I have 2 M16 mag pouches, a holster, a water bottle, and that's it right now. The buttbag has straps underneath to roll something like a sleeping mat, but what do you usually put inside? First aid kit? more mags?
>>
>>32829615
Why did you buy a bag and have nothing to put in it.
I mean if you have things you need to carry like you've mentioned then sure, but don't find things to put in it. Have things and buy things to put them in.

First aid on lower back is definitely an option, sleeping bag as well.
>>
>>32829648
Well if I was pairing it with a backpack and planning to live out of it on the run I'd have plenty of things to fill it with. If I plan for that kid to be what I use for moving and shooting while ditching my backpack, then the list slims down considerably. I'd think a first aid kit, water purification, maybe an extra box of ammo, an ultralight bivvy and then put a sleeping pad hanging under the bag. Plus a flashlight and extra batteries
>>
>>32829673
stuff that you need to have access to, but not constant access. Sorry, there are people on /k/ that do the above, of buying pouches then finding things to put in them.

Decent.

Honestly if you want a top tier "grey man" "loadout" just get a MEC bag. I've had three Mountain Equipment Coop bags and I have literally dropped them off glaciers and cliffs in Banff a fair amount and none of them have ever had anything broken on them. No strap, buckle, or material has ever broken or torn and they're pretty common/normal bags too.

Flat is not short. A flattened c collar is still longer than an m9 aid bag or even a Stomp 2. You never see one in the field prior to ambulance level care. Further, c spine injuries are far less common on the .mil side of emergency medicine than in the civilian world.
>>
>>32830981
its not on the layman list, and anyone who is .mil is going to have an actual medic, vs the average /k/ommando. My only experience is in the civilian field, so it'll be from that standpoint.

If you haven't ordered already, I highly suggest looking at outdoor research. Mechanix makes some comfy and functional gloves, but every single pair I've owned I've burned through in short order. These suppressor gloves from OR refuse to fucking die or rip though, no matter how much I abuse them.
>>
>>32833336
Tbh, I just bought them because I wanted shooting gloves they had good reviews and were cheap until I looked into a better pair. Doing that now, but I don't mind the $30 I spent on them even if they'll only last 2 months, and I doubt they'll break that quickly.

So far I was looking at the Oakley Pilot gloves since I get a discount bc contacts, and I'll take a look at the OR ones since I'm a huge fan of my OR jacket and summer wear.

Fair points gentlemen. I suppose I'm jaded for 2 reasons:
1) Within 2 hours of NYC a shitty radio is almost useless because of the outrageous amount of RF blasting out of the city.
2) In the north east (except NH and ME) a bone stock bushmaster is easily $1000. They were selling them for $1500 when Obama was re-elected and they were still flying off the shelves.

Wow, so the Northeast sucks for comms AND fun guns. Sorry bruh, that sounds terribur.

I've used Baofengs in the sticks where I hunt in the SE and we've had them stretching for miles without issue.
>>
>>32829260

Or one can just carry the shit they're trained for, not have all this extra shit take up space that needs to be kept organized, or else you got a giant mess of shit to go through to find some thimg. If a medic shows up to treat me, they should already be equipped to deal with what ever they come across, seeing as they are a medic.

I been a RN fag for going on 11 yrs now. 3 of that has been in the ED. My first aid kit is pretty much nothing more than a few cat tourniquets, few dif size pads, chest seals, gloves, some small boo boo shit, few other odds and ends.

I can do some medical shit on myself if needed right now (left hand is kinda jacked atm, so can't really use it) I can at least do more for surrounding ppl (shit is hard trying to dress wounds and shit with one hand)

Speaking of first aid. We had a gunshot victim brought in a few months ago. Guy took seven shots from what the cops said was from a .45, which so much for that stopping power (guy survived, even though like half the shots hit him in the torso) it was sweet to watch that surgery.
>>
>>32835353
I'm of the same opinion with regards to IFAKs. I see people loaded like a mobile hospital and it perplexes me. To each their own, but you really only need stop gaps in an IFAK.

Stop and seal is the name of the game. If you can't get to a hospital or competent doctor/surgeon by the time those measures have run their course, you're going to die anyway. NPAs I guess are good to go too, airflow is pretty important and they are easy enough to use with very little training/instruction.

Yeah, too many people with more money than sense. Hell, now the AR platform and just about everything else is banned unless you're willing to live with this abortion.

Baofengs here are garbage because the front ends are pretty terrible and you'll pick up neighboring EMS traffic on 440 bands all day long. I've used them for cheap drop-and-pop repeaters at events, but I would never put one in my loadout if I were going innawoods.

I'm not going to question your expertise; I mean it's pretty clear it's in way another sphere than mine. But, I'm going to point out that an IFAK is not meant for civilian stuff - it's meant for combat situations, and my IFAK list is built around a situation where you are fighting as a part of an organized force, be it a standing army or an insurrectionist militia unit. It's not for situations like getting accidentally or purposefully shot in peaceful times.

As far as I know, in most standing armed forces where IFAKs are issued, the medic or combat life saver or battle buddy that treats/stabilizes the casualty using said casualty's equipment, only using equipment from more extensive bags (in case of medics and combat life savers) if equipment needed is specialty equipment not carried, thus saving their own supplies.

Secondly, it's not like my recommended IFAK kit is exactly overloaded: it's literally just two tourniquets carried off it, a pressure bandage, pair of chest seals, a thoracostomy needle, an airway or two, and hemostatic powder. Not exactly a "giant mess of shit", I'd argue.

>>32835392
See above, not exactly what I would describe as a "mobile hospital".

Unrelated, but also posting my kit again because I want suggestions on what I can improve and do better. It's not perfect, but what to work on. Issues I am aware of are that colours don't match with the winter (yes, I have overwhites), helmet is non-ballistic, there's no active earpro (or an earpro for that matter) and that the waist bag flops around too much.

Here is my IFAK. However it's more of a FAK. I keep it on a gunfighter belt, fairly low pro, use it for general range/innawoods.

I personally keep a bit extra in there. Its really slim, and doesnt prevent me from getting anything I would need in a super emergency. And yes, I do keep some boohoo shit in there. Reality check, I'm not in an AO where everyone has general medical training and IFAKs on them anymore, so realistically if someone (Myself or others) are injured, I very well could be the only person with medical equipment on me.

Now as those who are trained know, where we do not have a legal obligation to help anyone, most of us have a moral one. Thats why I carry just a cunt hair extra. I can post dimensions to show, but I carry what I consider to be 'more' than either needed or 'required' for an ifak and its still super small and compact, easy to use.

Now I could (And I know some people here would advocate this instead, which is fine) carry what I would minimally in the ifak (for me), and then carry a separate medical kit, in either my camping bag, or truck when I go out. This is another option, and has its advantages, however I find my method works fine for me.
>>
>>32835507
Best suggestion I can give is to not worry about /gq/'s opinion. Get out and do the shit you want to do or foresee yourself needing to do with your stuff and go from there. That will give you a better idea of precisely what you need to improve, add or drop instead of playing the advice game.

My .02 is that unless you are climbing, riding on ATVs/helicopters or mounting night vision; drop the helmet completely. That's me though.
>>
>>32835507
The color mismatches make me want to reeeeeee, as far as things im just noticing off the cuff for constructive criticism..

>Consider a new admin pouch, looks like it might interfere with getting to mags (I could be wrong, up to you)

>It looks like you have a fanny pack on the side of your belt? Consider maybe changing that, It might work, but you are attaching it with a grimlock, the reality is that can and most likely will come undone at some point. (I have seen this a ton of times)

If im you, I consider getting a better belt, that attches to an inner belt, and just carrying an ifak, and maybe a mag or two on it (Which it looks like you might already be doing). You have a light belt set up, which is for the best, but if you have a light set up, use that to your advantage, consider belts like (Ronin, Tyrtactical, etc.) that are perfect for this.

>>32835556
And probably this, take everything with a grain of salt, its all personal advise, no one here knows your 'mission' or requirements, so its ultimately up to you.

As someone who has used eight different pairs of knee pads, I'm going to chime in.

The industry choices these days are Crye's integrated pads, and Arc'teryx's knee caps. A cheaper, popular in times past option were Alta's knee pads as well. Some ass-backwards people also advocate for soft integrated knee pads.

Crye's pads, to me, seem vastly overrated. They're lightweight, sure. But that's pretty much it. They refuse to stay in place when doing, er, more aggressive movements, even when they're adjusted all three ways around tightly, which is my main gripe with them: knee pads that do not sit on your knee have little use, and tend to be rather uncomfortable.

Arc'teryx pads are also vastly overrated, even if they're my personal choice. They're lightweight and comfortable, stay in place pretty well, and cover more area than Crye's pads. However, they're not the messiah savior of knee pads that people toot them as. While people tend to praise them for how they never slip, I would argue otherwise: they lose their adjustments pretty fucking quickly, and loose knee pads can and will slip. However, they are very, very swift and easy to put on, and can be readjusted without unbuckling anything, this making tightening simply enough a simple tug.

Alta's pads are a pretty old design. They weight about double as much as Arc'teryx pads, but they cover a massive area, and are surprisingly comfortable. They are however somewhat prone to slipping, but in my experience, they tend to keep adjustments very well. However, tightening is a pain in the ass to do, and buckling is another PITA as well, making them pretty annoying to put on. If it wasn't for that, I'd still use Alta's pads over Arc'teryx ones.

Soft integrated knee pads are shit. They're lightweight... and that's pretty much it. They provide almost nonexistent protection due to lack of a hard cap, and refuse to stay in the right place when you do aggressive movements. Avoid.
>>
>>32835556
Agreed with the helmet - a bump helmet doesn't really provide enough to justify the extra weight. A ballistic helmet is on my to-buy list for that reason. If you wonder why a ballistic one - well, this is built as a warfighting kit. A very lightweight warfighting kit in case Ivan decides to cross the border and I'll need to goinnawoods.

Which is actually pretty silly, because my wartime assigment is not in line infantry or any high speed operating for that matter, but as a company level medical squad leader - in other words, bullets are not really a threat to me - my main threat being accidental or purposeful artillery strikes, and the rifle isn't my tool in war.

Regardless, even for the purpose it is, a ballistic helmet is a must. Shrapnel is still the primary killer in conventional warfare.

>>32835569
The admin pouch actually doesn't interfere with reloads - it's hilariously low profile. However, it is awful in other ways - having no organizational capabilities, being too tiny to fit anything, being a hassle to use, and so on, and is on the list to replace at some point.

The fanny pack, well, I made commentary on it before. I thought of using one as a quickly detachable general purpose pouch, but I'm not entirely satisfied with it. The grimloc mount isn't secure enough - it might indeed come off loose from a sharp enough tug, and it also flops around due to not being fastened enough, and I intend to replace it with two pistol mag pouches (flashlight + multitool) and a general purpose pouch, when I get the dough.

On the belt - funnily enough, the BFG Beltminus is probably lighter weight than either one of the suggestions you made. What I am carrying on it are two mags, a dump, an IFAK, a general purpose knife, and a general purpose pouch for multitool, flashlight, and other tidbits. So I suppose it's lightweight enough.
>>
>>32835707
fair enough man, what dump pouch is that?
>>
>>32835750
BFG's ten-speed. Lightweight as fuck and packable like any decent dump should be, however the bag entry only has a small string for cinching, thus the entry will move, fold, and so on - refusing to stay a decent looking circle but often folding onto itself into a long thin opening. Swapping the cinch cord for thicker shockcord should be given, that is what I did at least.

Figured this would be the best place to ask. I'm in the market for a new backpack. Not looking for anything super fancy but I'd like something that's durable and can carry small heavy things like boxes of ammo without deforming and being uncomfortable. Something that can be used as a day pack or overnight bag, or as a rifle rest in a pinch. Preferably I'd like to keep costs less than 50-60 bucks.Yes I know that's cheap as fuck, but my last pack was a cheap messenger bag I got from a recruiter and it lasted me almost 5 years. 90% of the time I'm only going to be carrying my lunch to work, but I'd like something a little more robust and flexible this time around.

If you're an LEO facing the potential for a legitimate gunfight with unsavory characters, don't skimp out.

https://www.velsyst.com/law-enforcement-plate-carrier.html

That carrier is modular, can be outfitted in many ways and has the tape of velcro front and back to put your LE identifying patches on (POLICE, SHERIFF, etc).

Get lvl 4 ceramic plates. 10x12 (or thereabouts) with a shooter's cut.

http://bulletproofme.com/RP-Level-4-Stand-Alone.html#Lightweight

Are you out in the sticks or something. Hard to believe you don't have department resources that will guide you/pay for this shit.
>>
>>32839368
you need a level IIIA soft armor vest like the one most police are issued and on top of that you need to wear a slick plate carrier with ceramic level IV plates.
>>
>>32839368
I don't know your area but if you have money always level 4 and always Ceramic plates. never steel, and 3+ is a meme rating also avoid AR500 they're the Walmart of body armor.

You have an issued radio, and gat yes? Are there uniform restrictions as well? I doubt they'd appreciate you showing up looking like a SWAT door kicker for car patrols.

Don't you get a uniform and soft armor + carrier anyways?

Ideally if you can clear it just buy a solid PC like a Mayflower or something and if you're running a rifle then three taco's an IFAK and a pouch for your radio.
Run a belt with some mags on that and then I would recommend a second IFAK on your belt so if you dump your carrier in some sort of crazy wild west shootout you still have medic stuff.

But again, that's the door kicker roleplayer setup. You should really talk to your armory or something.

Gloves are for protecting you more so than the patient. Makes it easier to do blood sweeps on the body to determine injury, etc. And if a person is hit by a bullet or shrapnel then infection is the least of their worries honestly, and even if so, wipes man? If you're gonna write this paragraph you should know we clean wounds with saline and sterile gauze. And c-collars are much more so for trauma than combat wounds although it can potentially be helpful. Will a c-collar save your life? Nah. Will it potentially keep you from becoming paralyzed on your ride to the hospital.

I think what most people on here looking for medical stuff need to realize is what situation you expect to be when you're using it. If it's in your shtf kit understand that stuff like TQ's, Hemostaric agents, and gauze are all all well and good if you're gonna end up in a hospital somewhat soon. A severed artery in shtf is death, unless you can do some whacky amputation/deep cauterization in the field. Understand what the capabilities are of you medical equipment and know what is supposed to happen after you use it. Just wanna spread knowledge and promote some thinking.

>>
>>32840660
Mate, no offense, seriously, I mean it. You're vastly more competent than I am. But I think you're missing the point here, we're giving people advice on how to build an IFAK. Medics can be assumed to have enough competence to know what goes in their medical packs. But not everyone knows what to shove in an IFAK, and as such, we're giving advice on that.

An IFAK's function is to contain everything needed for immediate stabilization of the casualty. Nothing less, nothing more. Just enough supplies to fix the casualty's shit so he will survive long enough to be assessed later by a medic, or to be carried into a field hospital. As such I would argue the IFAK does not need supplies for cleaning the patient for more throughout assessment than "there are extraneous holes here, they should be plugged" - as we do not need very specific assessment to figure out which kinds of stabilization we do, i.e. tourniquet/pressure bandage/hemostatic powder/chest seal/combination of things.

A combat life saver's bag should contain more advanced supplies, naturally, just like a full medical pack should be indeed, what someone called a "walking hospital", supplies for various cases of various intensities. But IFAK, IFAK should only contain the essentials for stabilizing the casualty, immediate treatment under fire. IFAK is something issued to every soldier - those with actual medical training get more specified and more encompassing gear.

And on the note again; I fully agree: training is absolutely fucking vital. If you bother to pack yourself an IFAK, learn to use the contents while at it. The stuff it has are not really nuclear science. But even if you won't learn to use said supplies - have them regardless. Your unit's medic, be it a standing army or ragtag militia will use your supplies to treat you. Resupply isn't a guaranteed thing in conventional warfare, and there's going to be a lot more casualties in intensive warfare requiring plentiful supplies.
>>
>>32839321
>tfw .308 isn't a hunting caliber anymore???
>>
>>32841163
Continuing: As such, everyone carrying supplies required for their own immediate care is a good thing, even if they don't know how to use them. Plus, taking your pack entirely off, digging out the supplies you need, and repacking it is going to be slower than just tearing the casualty's own IFAK off and taking what you need from there. While during lulls, it's not exactly an issue, but in immediate care under fire (i.e. the exact purpose where IFAK is meant to be used) it'd be better just to use the casualty's own IFAK.

Then again, my advice is geared towards what my kit is built for, and what I am preparing for - e.g. full scale war and/or SHTF operating, and most of my advice can and should be thrown out of the window for situations it is simply enough not meant to - like low-intensity war (read: sandkips who are unable to cause significant unit casualties out of IEDs) and regular range hijinks, and situations where you do not operate with a competent group.
>>
>>32840660
As a last note, I suppose we could make a kitlist for combat life savers ( = squad medics) and combat medics ( = platoon medics), but honestly, I am going to assume that those who need those kit lists, have them figured out by themselves already.
>>
>>32840570

have you owned or shot either? because I've owned my p30 for 6 months now, and it has consistently failed me. Weak ejection, slide not locking back due to hands catching the giant slide release levers, a garbage trigger, a button decocker that's completely inferior to a safety/decock lever. The usp-c blew it out of the water, but I want a full size for capacity and looks
>>
>>32841565

yes I owned a USP for about 2 years, and a Mark 23.
heres the thing, if you're hitting the slide catch, adjust your grip throw your thumb on the outside of your support hand. the triggers are all garbage, the USP will be no different. the decocker on the USP is pretty crap, its not exactly smooth to use, thats even if you get a model with decocking.
>>
>>32841603
I found the slide would just release when I put a mag into the device anyways so I stopped using it as much. It was the first pistol I bought and carried. When I traded it for a 1995 USPV2 I found out why I didn't like the P30. The USP is a fullsize and fits me and balanced out better to help me shoot consistent shots while the P30 felt lighter? and unweidly to me. I also found that the safety/decocker system was really easy to use on my USP as apposed to the P30 that I had to keep looking at to make sure was alright. The grip felt better and fuller to me too. I wouldn't be the best source of anything pistol related I suck with them honestly. Nobody has ever taught me to properly pistol and as a result I'm just shit. Not trip posting because serious post.
