Nah, eBay. Shipped from china. Priced below normal. Should have known right away but I just bid in a hurry on my phone at work and didn't bother to read. Looked at it later and realized it was a clone. Won the item, and off it shipped to my door. Meh.

>>32827301

>>32827301

Dude how ?

Do you grip it like this ?

If not then you should try it.

Back of the knife under a crimp in the cap, left thumb holding cap to keep from flying away, knife lying flat over first finger of left hand. Then just twist the knife away from you using your left index as a fulcrum and your knife like a lever. Works great. Almost identical to using a lighter.

Or even better, do it with a closed knife instead.

I usually use my douk douk or opinel in the closed position.

>Let's see your patinas
god, why?

other than being able to spark off flint/chert, wtf is the point of carbon steel knives? why would you even want to do that with your knife? you can get the same edge stability with stainless steels, while having corrosion resistance.

carbon steel knives are LARP tier
>>
>>32827486
Well, I did say splurge too so it's up there. $95 without the sheath. Pic related on this anon's post.

>>32827471
>>
>>32827503
That would be a bit for me, however it's really slick. I might.

>>32827500
I like it because it can get a hair popping edge on it in no time. I use my knives mostly for cutting down cardboard and cutting butcher paper and things like that. They need to be quite sharp to do so effectively, and high carbon steel is the easiest to achieve and maintain that level of sharpness with just one or two minute touch ups.

And it's cheap. It's also very cheap.
>>
>>32827500
A pantina helps protect a high carbon steel knife from rust. In comparison to some stainless a high carbon blade will have higher apex stability than certain stainless and may be able to take a much finer edge. Case in point, s30v, s90v, and s110v perform better with a coarse finish.

There's more differences, but the bottom line is that a high carbon knife still has its place.

You boys jelly?

I just don't see myself using any of my Kershaw's, Case's, or Benchmade's effectively for small carpentry tasks and cutting drywall. And my Becker are jus too big.

Any of you guys actually use your flippers for work or mostly just defense and opening packages?

Just asking, not trying to be rude as I'd definitely be open to some recommendations if you guys have anything.

Hello /k/. Years ago I made a tutorial on how I made a folding knife out of scrap steel and hardware in a few hours.
Now I'm on the way to making professional quality knives.
I would like to be /k/'s custom knife fabricator but I know I need to prove myself.
In the coming months I'll be doing some knives for friends and then doing a limited amount of free customs for /k/ommandos, just for some more practice.
Please post replies with blade profiles and knife pics you want, I'm making a massive amount of designs.

I am planning to have a library of blade designs and options for people. I am making designs in CAD so I can easily scale proportions and dimensions to whatever is desired. Right now I am just making 1x3 (aspect ratio) blades but more proportions will come.
>>
>>32827738
Just keep in mind sensible designs will perform better than novelty designs. Great idea using CAD though.

>A pantina helps protect a high carbon steel knife from rust
the chromium in stainless does this without you having to do a damn thing, and prevents blunting from corrosion, which your patina does not.

>>32827581
>In comparison to some stainless a high carbon blade will have higher apex stability than certain stainless and may be able to take a much finer edge

weasel words?
by the time you drive the carbon level that high, you've already made the edge too brittle.

>Case in point, s30v, s90v, and s110v
did I say anything about retarded levels of carbides? no.

>>32827572
>high carbon steel is the easiest to achieve and maintain that level of sharpness with just one or two minute touch ups.
no. stainless doesn't have to mean tonnes of giant carbides that plebs are incapable of sharpening. you've been poisoned by marketing and Fuddlore.

What's your favorite easy to sharpen stainless that produces a fast razor sharp edge ?

I really don't use a whole lot of stainless. Vg-10 on my endura that's annoying as shit to sharpen, or the sak in my pocket which takes a great edge and holds it a very long time, but not quick to sharpen either.

Hi guys I'm not a big knife collector anymore but I need to sharpen my edc knife because it's getting dull. I really don't want to drop a bunch of money on a sharpener but would like to get it razor sharp like it came from the factory.

What is a way to do this? I know the ceramic mug way but I think that wouldn't help much

>>

>Hi guys I'm not a big knife collector anymore

how were you a "collector", yet never learned to sharpen? buying the new knife de jour every time your current one gets dull, doesn't make you a collector. it makes you the same chump every maker in the knife industry preys upon.

yes, and I'm sure they all live in nice little drawers, coated in wax.

there is no valid reason to own a 1095 blade, other than they are cheap to heat-treat, and get still good results.

So came across this new shop that only sells Spyderco knives and they got quite a few discontinued knives and exclusives. Pic related is a maxamet manix 2.
>>
>>32830423
theyre overpriced and supposedly have zero custoer service
>>
>>32830470
Would consider that a risk for getting some of these rarer knives. None of the other online shops have this many exclusives currently. And for someone interested in maxamet, but doesn't want a mule, this is kind of wanted info.
>>
>>32830531
yeah theyve got some neat shit,
they had the s110v pm2 like 2 days before most people
>>
>>32830423

Bentobox has been around for years. They have a bunch of stuff other sites have been sold out of for ages, but it comes at a premium. I'd shell out for some of the stuff they have. Already picked up one of their second run m390 pm2 exclusives and I'm sort of tempted by their m390 pm2/204p domino combo. For a steel chaser it's kind of a bottomless pit.

>>32830531

They aren't the only ones that have the maxamet manix 2 lw in stock right now and you can tell because the price isn't outrageous. While I'm not generally a fan of the pinned construction knives, I don't actually hate the gray FRCN and I want to fuck with maxamet.

>>32830546

They were the only ones to keep it in stock consistently for a good while, probably because they charged more for it than everyone else. I just waited it out and decided to chase down sprint runs instead. They DO have a number of items you aren't going to find anywhere else anymore and they damn well know it because they want over $200 each.

For me it's just an excuse to buy another m390 pm2 and get play with something new. Since I grabbed the new cru-wear manix 2 last night there's only five knives announced that I'm waiting for from spyderco this year, two of which are sprints.

I might skip the CS manix 2 and just get a 204p military instead, but yeah. That's about all I'm in for so far. I guess I'll pick up a s110v military/pm2 pair this year since they're not at all hard to find and my blurple manix 2 is lonely.

CLP for general cleaning and rust prevention, and Hoppe's for pivots if they need it.

It...honestly never occurred to me to do this--I just figured I'd have my knife for utility and never use it for cutting stuff like cheeses or fruits or meats.

Would food-grade mineral oil work?

proelia.jpg
59KB, 1500x751px
Got my Proelia today, sharp out of the box, literally did not even need to strap it or anything for it to just slide through paper like nothing and surprisingly evenly ground, I've had Benchmades and Spydercos with less equally grinded blade at both sides, but detent was absolutely piss poor and it had up and down and side to side blade pay.

So I took it apart, bend the lockbar a little bit more, applied some lube to the ball bearings and put it back together with the screws actually tight now instead of just barely holding it together and now it actually stays close while waving it back and forth, flips nice and has 0 blade play.

It's build pretty neatly, all the screws are attached in a way that you can not tighten them too far or tighten them too far as easy as with most knives since everything spins around freely, yet not too much so you can actually tighten the screws instead of the part where the screw goes spinning around wildly. And the pivot has a no idea what to call it solution in it but what it basically does is that you can tighten both screws as tight as they go without it pinching the blade too much and making it not moveable, which I like much more over the normal tighten it only a little and feel like it might fall off at any moment, or else it is too tight and you can't open up the blade at all.

2.5/5 knife from the box, 4.5/5 after fixing the problems, pretty lightweight for its size, the g10 feels velvety and I can't stop rubbing it, sits in the hand comfortably and no sharp edges or other fit and finish problems outside how loose the screws were. Flips nicely and the bearings are smooth even if it's screwed up tighter than a nuns anus.
>>
>>32835062

Made in China and put together in America, but must be at a place where they can't into screw tightening or proper detent. Comes with a few useful items like replacement screws for the handle and pocket clip, another extra pocket clip, and then some useless junk like a super tactical much pouching serious tuff bsnss pouch and a very low quality allen wrench that will mostly fuck up your screws if you use it instead of a proper tool.

For the price I got it, about 90$, it's a pretty good buy if you're willing to fix it, but at its original price point of closer to 150$ (euroshit country) not worth it, you can buy a lot more better stuff for that money.

As a knife hoarder it was pretty fun to take it apart and fix it as a way to pass a little time and get to know the inside workings of the blade and I can safely say that this was designed in a way that taking it apart is much less riskier and easy than on most knives where you curse a lot and pray to god you don't over or under-tighten any screws or strip everything accidentally unless absolutely precise. Which is why I'll probably enjoy being able to use this one for some dirtier jobs than I normally would with a pocket knife because you can go so wrong when taking them apart for cleanup, but with this I won't have to worry or dread it.

Not the best buy I have made but definitely a good one.

I can understand why he wouldn't want to. I can legally conceal carry a switchblades but I don't always want to carry my auto bedlam or some autos around because they are super expensive knives when I could carry a Paramilitary 2 or something which functions well as an EDC.

I guess the equivalent is people who build $3,000 AR-15s and only take pictures of them and keep them as safe queens. I don't think that is inherently wrong, it is their money but I understand why people could be upset.

No problem.
I like helping people out.
I may or may not be around though due to my schedule.
Check into used blades (I can find used combats for $250 or so pretty frequently)
Also, be aware of fakes. Lots of them out there. Don't ask the seller (because they lie) and do your research.
Halos are COMMONLY FAKED
So beware

How do you effectively deal with sharpening FFG blades?
>>
>>32845588
That's something I was worried about at first, but it's really not an issue. On the first gen vices, sometimes you had to use paper as a spacer.

But with the new vice you don't have to think about it, all you do is crank a leaver and the knife is locked in. I have no issues with FFG knives such as PM2s and Military's.

However the new vice is limited to under .25' thick blades. I think they have an extra you can get for .2-.3 blades.
>>
>>32845603

Interesting. As goofy as I think it is to pay that for a sharpener when I'm not doing it professionally, I want a zero bullshit guided system that gives me consistent and accurate results. Since most of my users are FFG spyderco blades I'm kind of apprehensive about dropping coin on a system that apparently struggled with those in the past.

I really just prefer having a nice case. I believe they will be much better protected in a pelican case and I can put a padlock on it if I am traveling.

I paid $40 for that pelican case new and I think that is a very fair price to get a nice and sturdy storage container for knives that cost a couple hundred dollars. I have never really been a fan of knife rolls, just my preference.

To broad of a question. You have to at lest consider for what use and at what price point. And even then you will get educated opinions at best.
>>
>>32846675
A knife that can cut through any material without ever dulling, chipping, folding, or breaking. Something that's non-existent.
>>
>>32846488
>>32846037
Yeah I like it, I picked it very carefully. I bought a case big enough to fit all my worth anything folders (well not my XL Espada... working on it though), and have a little room for expansion. If I run out of room I'm going to sell a knives to make room for new ones.

As is it seems like it will hold 35 medium-big folders, the two medium-small fixed blades, probably enough room for 20ish small slip joints (around the edge), a bottle of oil, my handkerchiefs go up above the foam, I have about 10 replacement Swiss Army tweezers/ toothpicks in the edge of the foam up top... And last but not least, I'm going to cut out a spot for the Anti-Moisture tin and spots for my Whia Torx drivers.

And lol, I'm going to get a bigger Pelican at some point for my sharpening equipment.

I considered a roll before I got my Pelican 1500. But there is something to be said about when you are talking to someone who did not know knife collecting was an actual non-basement dwellers hobby, and you pull out a 30lb suitcase with a few thousand dollars of knives in it.

Nice Lg Espada btw, I like the tan on black. I bought my last gen XL G-10 Espada when they were on super (going away) sale. And how do you like the CRKT otanashi noh ken (I think)? I have the Heiho and love the design but it's too small for me really.

If you have a hand at sharpening, get an Ontario. They are really amazing for the price, but come with a overly thick edge.

Becker is really worth looking at as well. And if you get one, buying a set of Micarta handles for it is 100% worth the $35.

Cold Steel comes to mind but avoid their 4116 steel knives:
-If you can spare it, the 3V Master Hunter. 3V is a fucking tank of a steel.
-Drop Forge hunter (I've been eyeing that up) but it has a really wide blade
-The SRK if you can fit it in budget

Kershaw makes a few, but I would just not get a stainless knife if you want to go hard.

Yeah I bought mine with the intention to have it pay for it's self... which it has, and just about all of my knife collection besides a $700 longsword I ordered a month ago.

To me it's just one of the sharpening tools I use, I have oil stones and super high grit Japanese stones for stuff like straight razors and wood chisels, a Spyderco Sharpmaker for serrations, a belt sander for machetes/axes/cleavers ect..., the Wicked Edge is my bread and butter though.

Considering getting a Ken Onion Work Sharp for sword sharpening. I can do just as good a job with my belt sander, but I don't want to even risk scratching the flats of a polished sword.

Also, one last question, what's the difference between a bayonet knife and this >>32847288 for example. Is it just the lug attachment part? It would be efficient to buy an outdoors knife that's also a bayonet
>>
>>32847654
I would think a bayonet would have reduced toughness in order to bend rather than chip when stabbing people.

Also bayonets are really only designed for stabbing, they are not that good for cutting, it fact most are somewhat dull. More so the bayonet point is not that great for utility.

The lineman knives are common, and the usgi demo knives can be had for about the price of a sak. So I just got a pioneer instead. I've been waiting to snap up a demo knife on eBay when I find a good price. In no hurry.
