The tag at Walmart says it has a 5 round capacity but it loos like the bottom can drop out for detachable mags. Is that how it works? 5-round internal mag with the option for detachable mags?

Barrels were too thin and unsupported, meaning that they wobbled. Ones made later than the 70s and 80s are fine, and even the old ones I believe are fixable without a ton of trouble, but I could be wrong there.

"Mini-14s are inaccurate" is a meme from back when they had pencil barrels that would overheat after two or three magazines. The issue could be fixed with an aftermarket accu-strut.

Any reasonably new Mini-14 has a much thicker barrel that isn't nearly as prone to overheating. Overall, they are about as accurate as your entry level ARs. Unless you are really into precision shooting, they are probably still more accurate than you are.

Only about $200, since you can get an M&P Sport II for $499 shipped.

And mini14 mags cost about triple what AR mags cost ($25-30 instead of $8) and the only ones worth half a shit are OEM mags.

Prior to the series 580 (introduced in 2005), all non-police-model Mini 14's had a very thin, thinner-than-pencil-barrel barrel profile, weren't freefloated, and had no good way to mount optics. This is where the majority of the "mini's are inaccurate" meme comes from as the barrels were so thin they would cause vertical stringing within 10 rounds and any inconsistent pressure on the handguard would cause drastic flyers in the group.

This is able to be mitigated with an accu-strut, though it doesn't solve all the problems, and the factory forend can be relieved enough to freefloat the barrel.

With the introduction of the 580 they went to the same barrel profile as the AC556 (roughly a mid-contour barrel) which significantly reduced vertical stringing under rapid fire but would still exhibit vertical stringing under sustained fire. They also introduced the "target" model with an even thicker barrel and about a 2lb combination muzzle brake/barrel weight. All 580-series and newer Mini 14's are *supposed* to be factory freefloated, although about 1 in 3 wood-stocked rifles and 99% of polymer stocked rifles will be contacting the handguard somewhere due to meh quality control and meh components. Still didn't solve the issues with trying to put optics on one, which up through the 580 required a scaled-down version of the single-screw-and-lotsa-JB-weld method used on M1A's or dovetailing a cantilever into the barrel.

Series 581, (Q2 2006) which is still current production, included integral weaver-style scope bases and greatly improved the factory iron sights, but did not address the freefloat-in-name-only issues.

The barrels themselves are very high quality, and if you pace yourself and ensure a freefloated barrel they can be quite accurate.
