I personally carry .40 I'll admit I'm not a huge guy at 5'8 175 with small girl hands. So it fits my preference. When you really get down to it why is this even an argument. A .40 carries a good balance between recoil, capacity, and the ability to kill with one shot is more likely than a 9mm. .45 fags like to argue until it's you vs 2 or more assailants and you need suppressive fire but don't have the magazine size for the job.

Not really. Comparing typical loads, a .40 has nearly the same amount of energy as a .45 all the while having more capacity and higher velocity. Next to the 9mm, the .40 shows a nice 25-30% more energy depending on the load. And if you're the type to carry hollow point ammo, .40 JHP tends to expand more reliably and still have more mass 9mm JHP (.45 JHP better than both).
