WASHINGTON — One American commando was killed and three others were injured in a fierce firefight overnight with Qaeda militants in central Yemen, the military said Sunday morning. The raid was the first counterterrorism operation approved by President Trump since he took office nine days ago.

Commandos from the Navy’s SEAL Team 6 carried out the surprise dawn attack in Bayda Province in a ground raid that lasted a little less than an hour. The target was a headquarters for Al Qaeda’s branch in Yemen that counterterrorism officials had deemed valuable enough to warrant a ground operation rather than an airstrike, a senior American official said.

>>
>>32815584
That was the single largest high profile SOF op in years. Of course it was going to be all over the news that the main vilified antagonist of the pentagon was dead.

Reminder that thousands of SOF guys died in Iraq, Afghanistan and all over the Middle East during Obama's terms and no one in the media know any of their names and neither do you. Let alone failed ops being used against the Obama admin, usually the "media" of sorts just blamed the pentagon, though blaming the pentagon is also stupid it's closer to the actual people to blame than the fucking president who hardly controls who deploys were specifically.

It's dumb to hold the president responsible for many things. Trump isn't responsible for every single military action much like Obama wasn't. Trump isn't responsible for the stock high of this week, just like Obama wasn't responsible for the stock market recovery during his term either.

The president isn't a fucking omniscient real time strategy game player.

SOF are generally more intelligent and mature than your typical grunts so it's likely most of them support HRC. >Also hope the Osprey was brought down by AA instead of shitty engineering.

Could be anything... like first Osprey lost in actual combat mission. That would be hilarious if there weren't fatalities and serious injuries.

USAF Osprey landed with way too fast forward speed in near Qalat Afghanistan and flipped over. Potential causes of accident. Pilot error, shitty weather (a factor in pilot error) or engine issues. USAF sent recovery team to crash site, they forgot to pick up flight data recorder, it should be the item to pick up from site after getting casualties out. Bombed the wreck. Only survivor from cockpit crew didn't remember a thing. Only evidence was video from A-10 that had the crash in it, suggesting possible engine failure and emergency landing. So accident investigation was inconclusive as fuck. Brigadier general who suggested that there might have been engine failure was told to shut the fuck up.

>Raids like that were done in WW2 & after all the time

In WWII casualties didn't matter, gliders crashed often, and if they lack a comfy place to land broke apart on impact. They can't abort a landing because no engine. If you have 130s and can land them, you don't need a glider. Gliders are fine if everything you have is expendable and the goal is worth scattering wrecked gliders and dead troops all over the landscape.

If you want to deliver things quietly without slaughtering your troops in single-point-of-failure gliders, air drop them and their vehicles. Russia even drops some AFVs with crews to get firepower on the airhead. Gliders are obsolete, have zero advantages (except for the enemy as large, non-agile targets) hence their absence in modern war.
>>
>>32816033
>There were something like a dozen civilians killed, it's sort of a big deal so the media will mention it

Exactly. 16 dead civvies, 8 of them kids and 40 something militants. They didn't go immediately for civilian casualties when Obama was in office, only after few days if it was a major fuckup like bombing a fucking clinic in Afghanistan. Media changed its approach to collateral damage immediately after Trump took office.

Gliders crashed because they were built in a time of resource scarcity(aka out of wood), and because they are landing at night before night vision goggles.

>If you have 130s and can land them, you don't need a glider
It's the point of relatively silent approach.

It's easy to grasp the advantage of your "landing" vehicle not being filled with fuel, or having engines that can be destroyed, or starting dust storms.
A shot to shit glider can still be snatched back up by the tow aircraft.

>A shot to shit glider can still be snatched back up by the tow aircraft.

Extremely risky IRL and the glider must be in an ideal position for the snatching. "Shot to shit" delicate airframes won't exactly benefit from sudden snatch loads. G's are real.

Airdrop is more robust silent approach, and airdrop unlike gliders makes it harder for the enemy to bowl a strike against troops trapped in a delicate one-way aircraft. Only autists still think gliders haven't been superseded by superior airlift methods.

That said, Osprey is an abortion with tiny payload and not really for contested air assault. Russian airborne forces are much more serious about air assault than the US, for whom most airborne units fundamentally serve as a tactical athletic club. Russians bring mobile protected firepower to the airhead while the US brings pedestrians.

RPGs can kill any aircraft in range. You don't need a guidance system for close, delicate targets.

Married people don't belong in the military. The fewer enlist, the fewer people with problems. I managed because my wife was an experienced vet, but for others Mary Jane Rottencrotch and the rest of the Crotchfruit family want attention.

Don't like the deployment rate? GTFO. Someone else can use the promotion.

>Gliders are fine if everything you have is expendable and the goal is worth scattering wrecked gliders and dead troops all over the landscape.

Gliders are fine at scattering broken AT-guns around landing zones as well. Also for sending in people armed with just pistols to infantry combat is something gliders do just fine (in US Army as glider pilots having rifles and SMG's is heresy).
>>
>>32816200
This. Gliderfags don't overlap people who IRL fly and fix military aircraft for good reason. You only get ONE landing attempt with a glider, you cannot see through the terrain surface to know you've suitable "runway" and unless you land it just fucking right you damage the glider and won't have room for takeoff.

The only use gliders have IRL is delivering vehicles which can also of course be parachuted. They are effectively single-use airframes and modern systems wouldn't change that because aircraft aren't cheap to carry back to Depot and rebuild.

Old video of how to do it right. For silence, drop infantry at a distance then follow up with airlift over the DZ.

Air drop doesn't at all replace gliders
Air drop spreads your troops out over miles of terrain, taking hours to regroup, then march all night to your target.
Thats not a surprise commando raid with tight time constraints anymore.

Gliders are literally the same as these helicopter raids, except silent. It doesn't have an engine, it isn't full of fuel, so you aren't going to run into situations where you are air striking a 100 million dollar chopper/V-22 because it can't take off.
>>
>>32816200
>Unless you're raiding an airfield like Entebbe
C-130s. They were kept running for the return leg. With gliders the Israelis would have been forced to somehow tow them all the way there, and then get the guys (and hostages) back before encountering the Ugandan air force.
Gliders are only for when you expect to hold the LZ until conventional forces catch up and relieve you.

Bro, I'm saying both gliders and C-130 are stupid for small scale raids.

Do you know how vulnerable an aircraft idling on the ground is? This raid wasn't in the middle of the desert. You'd need to bring a whole additional force to protect the aircraft. You could take them out with a fucking mortar.
>>
>>32817247
>Do you know how vulnerable an aircraft idling on the ground is?

A glider is far less vulnerable than a chopper or C-130.
>>
>>32817313
why is that? you're literally saying that the extraction method is to tow the glider again. if someone mortars the glider and it's no longer airworthy the raid force is literally stranded, same as with a C130 or a helicopter
>>
>>32816997

Not if they die during a covert op.

Also it's eerie how inhuman that guy looked
>>
>>32817313
Are you on crack?

Military gliders were always a one way ticket. In your "tow away glider" delusion you'd still need a plane to tow the glider out, which is vulnerable to groundfire.
>>
>>32815586
>LWDS
I guess it would be pretty embarrassing to get hit in the face by a dildo, but I'm still not that worried
>>
>>32817404
>you'd still need a plane to tow the glider out, which is vulnerable to groundfire.
It would only be in the area for seconds during extraction.
A vastly different situation to choppers or planes sitting on the ground for an hour

No gliders were not "one way tickets".

are you being deliberately stupid? the glider is going to be completely stationary, just like a parked C130 or a landed helicopter. you can try to mortar the raid force no matter what the insertion method is, that's completely irrelevant to this discussion.
>>
>>32817529
Which is why silence & stealth is important. Aka a glider.
>>
>>32814214
>Again
>>
>>32817481
Was this ever done under fire, or even behind enemy lines?

The advantage of helicopters don't have to land to drop troops off, loiter in the air and land and take off quicker than an aircraft can take off.

>>32817803
If gliders were so effective, we'd still use them. But we don't use them, meaning that there are more effective ways of bringing troops into the target area. Once a glider has landed, it is immobile, giving the enemy plenty of time to engage and destroy forces around the glider and the glider itself. A helicopter can drop off troops quickly and move to a safer location to be able to be used for evac later. Gliders aren't effective. Get that through your head.

Why has nobody used a glider assault since WW2? The US, Britain and the Soviets operated gliders in WW2, all three have fought in long and difficult counter insurgency operations and none of them have used them since.

Helicopters can do 99% of what a glider can and still be able to take off after. The only advantage gliders have is stealth, and even then you're better off with high altitude parachute drops with helicopter extraction afterwards.

Well they go through BUDs, which is a well documented. After that they go into the program as SEALs. The training beyond that I have no clue about. The DEVGRU squadrons select new guys from the SEAL teams. That's obviously very selective and competitive. They can also be kicked out of DEVGRU by their teammates.

>Are they truly redpilled?
They OD on redpills. They endure an entire career of stress and killing people. Of course they are fucked in the head.
