a beginner should learn to shoot with a .22LR rifle. any .22LR rifle. then they should practice with a ruger mark iv or some other .22LR pistol with similar administrative features/procedures.

however, there's no specific beginner need to actually own these things. just a general need to have access to them to begin learning to shoot -- so buy them only if you can't borrow/rent them, unless you're sure you'll want them later for some other specific need, whether its resale value (this basically excludes the 10/22), or varmint hunting, or whatever.

even if you have a pile of money, as a learner, that money is better spent on range time with a borrowed rifle than it is on a battle rifle you'll immediately develop a flinch with. you might also want some safe queens though, that's up to you.
