So I just got back from the Duluth gun show /k/ and I can say without a doubt that gun shows are dead. M44 for $449, "Russian" SKS for $549, some fat fuck sitting behind a pistol table trying to tell me that the Nickel J frame I was looking at was "An aluminum cylinder from 1854" All the new stuff was either at or above retail. WTF /k/
>>
Don't go to shitty shows and avoid shitty vendors dude
>>
>>32803936
I bought my AR-15 from a gun show in Indiana in 2012. It was properly priced and the guy even gave me a 20 round box of ammo.
>>
>>32803936

>collect different firearm cartridges
>every gun show there's always this old former East German military guy with a booth set up with hundreds of different oddball cartridges for sale
>$1 apiece, gives em to me for 75 cents cuz he knows me by sight now, always has a bunch of new ones every time I go
>get to listen to wacky stories about being in the German military in the late 70s-early 80s, pretty sure he makes a lot of them up cuz he's old and I don't think he's got anything going on, still good stories
>get free admission to the gun show because I'm a member at the local gun club

Fuck everything else about the gun show though.
>>
>>32803936
but how much was a 7lb bag of jerky
>>
>>32804114
this dumbass op probs didnt even visit the shady guy with the bags of reloaded 9mm smdh
>>
As a kid I enjoy the sugar roasted almonds, rattle snake pit, coin collector booths, and pocket knifes
>>
>>32804303

>>
>>32803936
I only go to meet my local reload supplies guy. Show is closer than going to his house.
>>
>>32804042
>cartridge collector
shit man, me too

best place for cartridges, especially to fill out obsolete and oddball commercial hunting ammo, is estate sales

I picked up a bag of loose mixed ammo for $1 once
.33 WCF
.32 rimfire
.38 rimfire
.41 rimfire
buncha copper bp .22
and tons of common calibers
>>
>>32803936
Last year I picked up a VG BSA SMLE from an old fudd for 450 maple bucks, and a VG M96 Swedish Mauser from another old fudd for 350,

90% of the sellers at gun shows are jerk offs, but ive always found you can find a good deal if you get there early and dig around
>>
>>32804437
and just because the guns are overpriced, doesn't mean there aren't deals at that table

look for guys that don't know what they have and price it to move
or look for the little things
I found a guy selling ban 20 round LE only maked Mini-14 mags for $15 once and I got a coule
>>
>>32804303
Banhammer
>>
>>32803936
I was thinking about going to that show. Thanks for saving me $10.
>>
>>32804792
Op here, actually it was only $5 so I didn't save you that much.
>>
>>32804303
RATTLESNAKE PIT?? WTF kind of gunshow did you go to as a kid?? I want to know more!
>>
If you're into some of the more niche shit and other odds and ends they are definitely worth it. I found a great custom repo of a French northwest trade gun along with about 500 ,62cal balls and a nice handmade case for $500.
>>
>>32803936

Don't worry fellas. Once the boomers check out our generation will make gun shows great again.

/thread.

Fuck all the damned sporterized shit they (and their spawn) manufactured.

I literally had to talk someone out of sporterizing a Finnish Mosin earlier today at my local gunshow (went to the CASC one in the VBS. It was fun 'til I realized I'd missed out on FAL parts because lolnomoneyfodem)

Loads of booths taken up by bastards with nothing but Remington 870s, Remington 700s, and the same ten to fifteen fucking guns over and over again, taking up space that could have gone to guns either more useful or more interesting.

Seriously.
Nobody wants your fucking Remington 700 "yet another generic hunting scene that apparently adds $700 to the rifles value edition" over a fucking Luger or 1911 or Glock or modern sporting rifle or Mauser that are infinitely more fun to shoot or collect.

Oh, and fuck tasers. Yeah, less lethal and all but PLEASE stop demonstrating them. The noise is akin to fingernails on a chalkboard.
>>
>>32804721
I need to get one of those for my BHP
>>
>>32809227
Okay, I'm a reasonable man and calmed down after writing this post.

I'll ask the question; does anyone like the booths i mentioned and would rather have more of them than the surplus and modern booths...

Oh, also, the Hibatchi AR booths are cool as fuck.

You can always haggle. I do agree though, the prices are kinda ridiculous even if you can knock a few bucks off the price tags. Especially the people that do sales tax.
>>
>>32803936
The last gun show in my town was absolute shit.
No more jerky venders.
No more tazers going off randomly.
Just the same old fucks showing off their collection under glass cases with NOT FOR SALE or don't touch the glass signs.
Ammo venders are almost twice the price than the local Wal-Mart.
Anything remotely interesting was double the price than you could find online.

There've been a recent influx of butchered SKSes at the shows I've been going to.
>>
>>32807817
i dont even dislike snakes but this made me nervous as fuck.

anyway, you cant go into a gunshow with any expectations. i go just to look around, maybe pick up a box of weird caliber ammo i dont normally buy or some little accessory that would cost more in shipping than the item is worth.
>>
>>32803936
no shit man, was there not too long ago, Dahlonega Anon here~
I didnt see an m44 or sks for those prices but i did see a fatguy selling pistols and shit i avoided cause he tried to stare everyone down.
and i mean other than the gunstores that show up to sell their shit, its very rare to see anything special or unique unless its a private seller since most of those gunshops just bring what they know people will buy and maybe a could cool looking things.
Like Chestee Firearms was there with those Single-shot 50.cal AR-15 uppers with the custom muzzle breaks they make to draw the eye and shit.

You do realise that the hibachi ar booth is basically an extension of the custom R700 table right?
It's the rifle of the era offered in different configurations, the only difference being the interchangeably of parts on the rifle is less limited by manufacturing methods and design.
>pic only slightly related because you can find truly oddball shit at gunshows
>>
>>32810718
They don't build the Remington 700 in front of you.

I just thought it was a cool gimmick.
I also have to point out it also wouldn't be nearly as bad if the people who ran the Remington booths as I will now call them for simplification actually had a tendency to be knowledgeable people who actually have a shit about guns beyond the fact that they can shoot bullets at deer with them...

I apologize for my original post. I'd literally just gotten back from the show at that point and was quite pissed.

I get what you're saying man it's cool.
Just realize it was a different game back when these guys got into it, their generation had different values and different expectations when it came to their firearms.
Much like guys now will go to shooting courses to learn how to properly transaction from rifle to pistol to cover, to either indulge in SHTF fantasies or merely for the experience and knowledge. Guys in the 70s had a different experience with firearms they mostly experienced them through the lens of recreation at hunting camp. So to that guy who spent 50 hours a week at a mill that engraving on the walnut stock along with the compass in the stock has every bit of value that your PEQ or various other firearm configuration has to you.

Yes there is people who prefer interacting with those arms, largely because of a combination of aesthetic and nestolgic reasons. They didn't buy that rifle because it was in the battle of long duck dam, or that it can put five bullets in one hole at 150m they want it because that's what brings them a great sense of satisfaction, calm and happiness that morning after their buddy Mooney made an ass of himself during that euchre game.

Western PA fag here.... I go to as many gunshows as I'm able to just for the crazies. I swear it's better than television. I once had a "prepper" tell me how to make Faraday cages out of ammo cans to shield my floppy discs from an impending EMP disaster. (Implying anyone uses floppy disks anymore) No shit this guy should have been wearing a tinfoil hat.

Regarding prices I've learned that wearing my OIF Veteran hat kind of wards off the real assholes/crazies. Not always... but most of the time. I especially love talking to WW2 Vets. Feels good bruh.

Idk anon, At the Mason MI gun show there are some reliably good deals.

There's a guy who sells hand tooled bull leather belts for $40 apice cut to your length. They're not really pretty but they're stiff and thick and built to last. >imb4 "I'll show you something stiff and thick..."

There's a family with a booth that sells homemade saltwater taffy for $7 a pound, $12 for 2 pounds, or $5 per pound if you buy three or more.

There is a small company that sells a special blend of CLP that may be voodoo but I swear it works better than hoppes or breakfree.

Last time I went there was a new rifle selling for like $100 below MSRP that, since it released, hadn't been on the shelves of any gunstore with in a hundred miles for more than 8 hours at a time. Additionally they were selling a nice piece of German glass for like $300 below MSRP. Admittedly the glass wasn't a stellar deal, but it saved me a two hour to the nearest dealer and back drive so I'm gonna consider the gas and time I didn't spend part of the discount.

I got lucky on the rifle and glass, but there are usually some good deals at Mason if you can balance not getting your hopes up looking for anything in particular and at the same time knowing what you're looking for.

It is kinda painful to exist in an area with that high a fudd concentration, though.

Clearly some sort od vetting system is needed and something done to make the price of wares be realistic. Something is fukered

Sometimes you find deals. One I went to a few weeks ago I got 126 rounds of 8mm Turk surplus for $25, and some .311 FMJ bullets and incendiary bullets for under 15 cents per bullet.

Best deal I got though was about a year ago, got a spam can of nugget food for $110 and a nice M39 for $275. Very mild pitting in the bore but otherwise it looks great.

I still go to shows, but mainly for parts, old mechanic/machinist/gunsmithing tools, or reloading equipment.

Even -If- the political climate and gutting of gun laws proceeds on the current course, it'll still take ~2 to 5 years for the reality of the economics to get most vendors to adjust pricing accordingly.

Gun shows are "buyer beware" like anything. $500+ sks does seem ridiculous considering I bought a Russian unfired for $140 in 1995, but it's nice to know I made a good investment. The best deals I've made and the worst deals have happened at gun shows. In 2005 I bought a "standard issue" 15A2 from a guy at a show who had built it ground up on a DPMS lower receiver. I replaced the trigger group for $100 and it is now the most accurate semi I own. Paid $650. Would not sell for $1500. On the other hand, I paid $150 for an H&R .22 revolver that fell to pieces the first time I fired it single action mode. Gun show had already left town. I really like gun shows, but if you're not at the top of your game, bring someone who is- buying or selling. Once I almost sold an old but perfect Fox .410 sbs to a guy at a table. Luckily a passerby told me the guy would turn around and sell it for $800. Luckily I kept it and and sold it to a hot shot quail hunter for $1100 couple years later.

I mainly go to fingerfuck guns that my LGS doesn't stock. if I find a deal/gun I like that isn't completely assrape priced, I might buy something.

Last gun show had some great deals. Also a lot of bad ones.

$275 Hi-Point carbines NIB. Tempted, but wasn't about to invest in yet another round.

$290 Mossberg 500 with a heat shield, wooden furniture, and bayonet attached to an 18.5" barrel. If I didn't already have a 500, I would've probably picked that up.

On magazines and whatnot, people were slashing prices for me because I shamelessly wear my deployment hoodie to gun shows for this reason. I'm not even moto, just cheap.

Yugo Mausers ridiculously marked up. Same with nuggets. $350 Stevens 320. A whole lot of sporterized nonsense, poorly crafted homemade knives, le katanas, one of the biggest booths was the guy who always shows off his Nazi paraphernalia, le katana meymeys, etc.

Also, all of the rifle ammo was overpriced. Rifles ranged from overpriced to passable/better at an LGS.

All of the pistols were asinine, except for an AK pistol. But, I couldn't get it anyways.

Yes, I like to see fudd guns at gun shows. Why? Because I use them to hunt and you can usually find pretty good deals on either used ones or ones in less-popular calibers.
>tfw picked up a Remington model 7 carbine in 7mm-08 that was NIB for $325 because the FFL that ran the booth had had it for like 3 years with no interest
That rifle normally sells for ~$700.

And it beats the shit out of some of the gun shows I've been to where you have 50 tables of the same mix of AR parts and low-end AR's (sporticals, M&P Sport 1's, shrubmasters, Hogue tube handguards, BSA/Tasco/NCStar scopes, the cringiest Spikes milspec lowers for $200, etc). I have seen 1 complete AR from a reputable manufacturer out of the last 30 gun shows I've been to, it was a fat autist walking around with it on his shoulder, and it was a DDM4V3 in meh condition and the guy wanted $2500 for it.
>>

>>
>>32814692
>something done to make the price of wares be realistic

If there's no demand, prices would trend downwards. If there's demand, there's no obligation to cut prices.

You can show at the last day with cash to do well at gun/car/bike shows. People hate turning down dead presidents and if they didn't make their booth cost etc back they are often reasonable.

East tn here last gunshow i wentto was enjoyable. Many novelty firearms with somewhat questionable price. Haggle was not impossible, people were willing to play low ball meet you in the middle game. Lots of private sellers so thats just a plus. Ammo was not too bad. Almost retail. Mags were going cheap. Couple vendors with boxes and boxes of misc mags from $5-10. All used but hell they were cheap. Suprised that i saw tarus' out the fucking butthole. Picked up an AO 1911 for around 400 so that was nice.
No jerky. :( but there was assorted nuts.

Tl;dr TN shows not too bad

>>32808966
Your generation will still want to make money, not do each other favors. Gun shows are dumping grounds for what doesn't sell locally. That won't change with a generational die-off.

Gun shows don't need to please anyone they don't please already. For the good shit, it's a seller's market. For the crap, it's a buyers market.

It's all a toy market and sellers know this.

Been to a few over the years, seems I always walk away with $20 or so worth of novelty somethings and it's not a bad way to spend a couple of hours.

I have yet to see actual firearms or ammunition that I would want to buy at a gun show for what they're asking, though. Not once. Basically, take a gun that you might like, add about 50% over what you think would be in the high retail range, and you've got most gun show sales philosophies right there. As far as ammo, all the folks who were hoarding the .22LR and cleaning out the WalMart ammo racks so that nobody could find ammo - those folks are all there with a little booth, selling that ammo at a huge markup.
You'll occasionally see a fun collectible gun and some weird antiques that are fun to look at, just don't ask how much or you'll end up with a ridiculous quote and a somewhat peeved guy trying to justify what he's charging when you try to wander off. If it seems reasonably priced, it's broken.
>>
>>32828274
The hell you say. A gun show with no jerky? That isn't even remotely believable. The total weight of dried and somewhat questionable meat at a gun show always far exceeds the total weight of lead and steel. It's like, a rule. Maybe even a law.

As far as the ATF is concerned, residency is based on your intent to stay in a state. Rent an apartment off campus to become a resident, buy some guns, and when you're done you're free to change your intentions. I'm not a lawyer, but it seems to me that anyone with a lease or mortgage in a state has an intention of making a home there, even if they move away later on.
