The smaller mass of the bullet, compared that of the gun-shooter system, allows significantly more kinetic energy to be imparted to the bullet than to the shooter. The ratio of the kinetic energies is the same as the ratio of the masses (and is independent of velocity). Since the mass of the bullet is much less than that of the shooter there is more kinetic energy transferred to the bullet than to the shooter. Once discharged from the weapon, the bullet's energy decays throughout its flight, until the remainder is dissipated by colliding with a target (e.g. deforming the bullet and target).

Hydraulic shock is a term which describes the observation that a penetrating projectile can produce remote wounding and incapacitating effects in living targets through a hydraulic effect in their liquid-filled tissues, in addition to local effects in tissue caused by direct impact. Just as force applied by a pump in a hydraulic circuit is transmitted throughout the circuit because of the near incompressibility of the liquid, so the kinetic energy of a bullet can sometimes send a shock wave through the body, transferring physical shock to tissues whose physiologic function may be disrupted by it (especially in the circulatory or nervous systems).

There is scientific evidence that hydrostatic shock can produce remote neural damage and produce incapacitation more quickly than blood loss effects. In arguments about the differences in stopping power between calibers and between cartridge models, proponents of cartridges that are "light and fast" (such as 9mm) versus cartridges that are "slow and heavy" (such as .45) often refer to this phenomenon. Human autopsy results have demonstrated brain hemorrhaging from fatal hits to the chest, including cases with handgun bullets.

In such meticulously selected cases brain tissue was examined histologically; samples were taken from brain hemispheres, basal ganglia, the pons, the oblongate and from the cerebellum. Cufflike pattern haemorrhages around small brain vessels were found in all specimens. These haemorrhages are caused by sudden changes of the intravascular blood pressure as a result of a compression of intrathoracic great vessels by a shock wave caused by a penetrating bullet.

It has often been asserted that hydrostatic shock and other descriptions of remote wounding effects are nothing but myths. Correspondence in the journal, Neurosurgery, reviews the published evidence and concludes that the phenomenon is well-established.

It's important that we don't forget just how much of a weak fucking sister 5.56mm out of a short barrel is. 5.56mm M855 ammunition is optimized for a 20" barrel with a 1:7 twist. It is not surprising that its greatest velocity of 2979 ft/sec is obtained in a 20" barrel. After all, Stoner designed the cartridge for the 20" barrel.

Decreased velocity with barrels much shorter than 14.5" (the M4 carbine barrel) have a number of unwanted effects. Lowered linear velocity produces lower rotational velocity, which will result in diminished gyroscopic stability of the bullet. It will also result in significantly decreased projectile kinetic energy, decreased ability to generate a significant would channel, and will reach a point of diminishing returns where lethality of the round definitely comes into question. Once you go below 11", muzzle velocity nosedives. M855 bullets traveling below 2500 fps when impacting a target will not produce a lethal wound channel. On the graph, anything below the red line is shit.

Secondly, with shorter barrels, tuning of the gas port for weapon cycling becomes more critical. Adding a suppressor, which does slightly increase bore pressure, will result in more erratic and forceful cycling of the weapon leading to earlier weapon failure. It is also apparent that the pressure near the barrel rises exponentially with less barrel length, which necessitates that suppressors on shorter barrel weapons be designed to handle much higher pressures.

In short, there has been a cultural shift from the 20'' barrel length in AR15/M16 weapon systems chambered for 5.56 to progressively shorter barrels for the purpose of producing an increasingly more compact assault weapon without resorting to a bullpup design. This causes problems with sound, and lethality. If you don't want those problems, use a bullpup, or a different caliber.

The following smaller calibers fit in larger calibers. They go one way. Do not try them the opposite way.

.357 Mag -> .38 Special, .38 S&W

7.62 Tok -> 7.63 Mauser

.322 Fed Mag -> .32 H&R Magnum, .32 S&W Long, .32 S&W,

7.62x38R -> .32 S&W Long.

.44 Magnum -> .44 Special

That's really about it.

>Mag compatiblity

Marlin camp Carbine uses 59 Series Mags

Ruger Carbine users ruger P95 Mags

(Everyone knows about beretta's PX4/92 series compatible with the Cx4, and Keltecs Mess of rifles)

P229 Mags in 9 and 40/357 are the same damn thing with different witness holes and VERY slightly different followers, but they will work in each other guns without problem.

CZ 75s in 9/40 use the exact same mags with just witness holes. Nothing else is different.

XDs use the same magazines in 9/40 with different witness holes.

Glocks don't, funnily enough.

Any gun that is chambered in 357 Sig is using .40 cal magazines of the same model.

P228 Mags will fit and work in a 9mm P229. Both sizes.

FNP mags don't work in a FNX.

XD mags don't work in a XDM

That's all I got.

*Barrett stole the 3 lug triangle bolt design from the Leader T2
*The guy who designed the Leader T2 designed the Bushmaster M17s
*There are two gens of M17s, the first had a shorter magwell and the receiver pins weren't well designed and allowed for the upper and lower to separate an cause double-fires, the second gen had a longer magwell and fixed this issue.
*The Mg42 is roller-locked, short recoil; the Mp5, G3, CETME B,C and L are roller-delayed
*The Cz52 pistol is also roller-locked, short recoil.
*The Calico 9mms are roller-delayed and there are two generations. The first have a straight safety and reliability issues and could potentially fire when the bolt dropped. The second gen has a curved safety and fixed this issue.
*IMI made closed bolt full auto Uzis in all sizes.
*The Suomi M31's end cap is an air valve
*The AKM receiver is 1mm thick, the RPK is 1.5mm thick.
*Original AK slab mags are 1mm thick, the newer steel ones are 0.75mm
*The original Saiga trigger group had an overtravel stop under the trigger (the Saiga 308 did not have this)
*Izhmash made 2rd Saiga 12 mags
*There were Saiga 12C models brought into the US during the assault weapons ban for police agencies. They were LEO marked and have ak100 poly folders and came with LEO marked 8rd mags.
*The first models of Saiga to be imported were the 410s. They had a different gas system and were marked 3" magnum only and also the side rail had triangular pointed ends.
*The veprs were first imported and brought to market by Robinson Arms, the same company that makes the XCR.
*The RPD, DPM, DTM, and DShK are all the same family of guns and use a flapper-locked system
*The Sks and Pts41 are similarly in the same family and use the same system
*The Sterling smg can use both Sterling and Sten mags; the Sten cannot, however, use Sterling mags
*The Carl Gustaf M/45 smg uses Suomi M31 stick mags, and has a magwell that can be removed and allow for the use of Suomi coffin and drum mags.

Hi guys, I'm Anon, from 4chan, here for your weapon trivia thread on /k/.

Now, you probably know that the Americans took shotguns into World War Ones, because we're goddamn Americans. We knew what shotguns could do in the trenches and goddamn they did it well.

Did you know however, that the Germans actually had the temerity, in September of 1917 to lodge a formal protest...

... I do believe that I just got so overcome by the awesomeness of the shotgun that I just said '1917' instead of saying 'September 1918'...

...saying that the Winchester '97 was a violation of the Hague conventions and the civilized rules of war.

Well, civilized? Maybe. Rules of war? I don't think so.

The US Government took a look at this and said "You know what? Aren't you the bastards that came up with the idea of flamethrowers? Didn't you fuckers invent poison gas and start using it too? You know what? We're not going to stop using shotguns and if you execute any Americans we're gonna execute all our German prisoners too, so how do you fucking like that?"

Guess what? Six weeks later the war was over. That's how they liked it.

I got a few historical facts. Most are probably well-known here, but some anons might find them cool.

>Beretta is the oldest still-active firearms manufacturer in human history. Founded in 1526, they’re coming up on their 500th anniversary.
>John Moses Browning sent a prototype BAR with his son into WWI.
>H&K started when 3 former Mauser engineers started making sewing machine parts in 1949.
