The games industry is garbage. Its 2017 and the most in-depth tactical game on the market is an turn based rpg from 1999.

With the 1.13 mod and its activation of features like a suppression system, youve got the ultimate small unit tactics and gun porn game. The amount of depth JA2 1.13 has is honestly sometimes intimidating. From your basic squad combat, to mortars, defenses with traps, snipers, gassing, explosive breaching, etc etc this game has it.

There simply isnt anything else that comes close.

Honorable mention to brigade E5, which IMO had the potential to be really good but was let down by basically being nothing more than a glorifed tech demo. Its sequel, 7.62 high calibre, is quite popular on /k/ but IMO is somehow an inferior game to its tech demo prequel, as E5 had working suppression system, and maps with a large number of enterable buildings facilitating CQB and room clearing, and generally just had better mechanics. The sequel on the other hand, is more polished and has a storyline, but lacks most of the features that make E5 really good gameplay wise.

/k/ game thread i suppose

Steel panthers main battle tank is /k/ as fuck

I love how JA2 uses the Fallout 1/2 engine.

They're my 3 favorite games too.
>>
>>32802427

the simulation markets obsessive focus with tanks and aviation is kind of a bugbear of mine, even in combined arms simulators the infantry aspect is treated as an afterthought and is seriously shallow, with the exception of maybe the latest versions of the combat mission series.

This is sad because I believe infantry simulation could be every bit as as interesting and perhaps even more dynamic than what is currently available with tank combat and air combat simulators.

The closest we've got in that regard is ArmA which is certainly good but kind of ruined by the prevalence of 3rd person shenanigans and garbage dayz and battlefield rip off missions in the public space.
>>
Clunky engine, counter-intuitive interface, cheesy storyline. I always preferred Fallout Tactics to JA2

Nah. Infantry simulation in Combat Mission isn't anywhere deep. It's a complete pain trying to give units accurate orders, so they'd behave anywhere near what real humans would. You can't even secure corners in the game, fire on the move and all urban combat in general is clumsy as fuck. I'm just going to stick to operational simulators until we get something better on a tactical level.
>>
>>32802459

i agree, especially on the urban combat part, but its still a damn sight better than most games in this category. Theres at least microterrain simulation to some degree, suppressive fire and ability to split units.

Other games, even by the same developer, for example theater of war series, were fucking garbage in this respect.
>>
>>32802426
This shit is over-complicated as fuck.

And this is coming from a guy who loves TBS and Shooter RPG games.

Ghost Recon, the first one, probably had the best infantry-based FPS combat for modern warfare.

Red Orchestra 1 (not 2, which is garbage for children), was and is still the best WW2-themed FPS.

I feel like people remember those early tom clancy games with a rose tint.

Personally I remember the PVP multiplayer being a ridiculous run and gun shooter, so was raven shield another game people have a false memory of, at least in the PVP component.

Project Reality for Battlefield 2

I liked Operation Flashpoint. I think it is very immersive because of constant tension.

>Have to check your six every five seconds or get your whole team killed
>Can die from single bullet
>Actually need to aim to hit over long distances
>Nice soundtrack
>Hardcore quotes after death

Reminder to play 7.62 with the Blue Suns mod for even more guns than usual and some fixed shit.

Also, is 7.62 the only game with the Obrez in it?
>>
>>32803773
Seconding this. Plus its a free standalone game. Mic is required.
>>
>>32805278

The new update for BF2 Project Reality has an Obrez for one of the factions.
>>
>>32802962
>Red Orchestra 1

Loved to play that, crying shame it's dead. Amazingly Darkest Hour isn't and is a blast to play.
>>
>>32805411

Wait Darkest Hour is still populated ?

RO2 is honestly not that bad but I really think RO1 is a better game. I really think that they should have given RO1 a graphical overhaul with some quality of life stuff to improve the experience.

I can still vividly remember pushing through a town with my team and tracers going both ways and ricocheting off of surfaces. I think RO1 is way more gritty and brutal then RO2 as well.
>>
>>32805393
BF2 was the last good first person shooter

They've all got shittier since. Why is this happening?
>>
>>32805463
RO1 had way better wound mechanics, too. Different hit areas fucked you up in different ways, and weapons could get hit and fly out of your hands.
>>
>>32805601

oh god I can also remember the first time my gun got blown out of my arms

also I remember needing to pick up a dead soldiers ammo bags if you wanted to use his gun

fucking RO2 is casual the more and more you think about it

>hey its hard to see people !
>lets close in the maps and give everyone cyborg eyes
>hey picking up someone elses gun and ammo takes too long !
>just glue it all to the gun :^)
>so should we keep the wounding mechanics ?
>yes but make it matter less and let everyone preform dramatic field surgery on themselves in 3 seconds
>>
>>32805486

bf2 is really fun but there are plenty of things about it that make it completely bullshit. namely how overpower jets and gunships are, also grenade spam and electric worm abuse.

imo, bad company 2 is the best battlefield game

Of E-series, dont forget Marauder -Man of prey. They fied most of annoyong shit of E5 and 7.62, and the game is actually fun to play. The storyline is also fun - you are being a guy in SHTF russia.

No mutants or radiation shenanigans, but there is a stalker-ish vibe to the setting. Now, they took away the sandbox part, which sucks - but the missions and story were well degsined, and combat was polished.

My only real complain is that last few missions felt rushed, like they suddenly decided that they need to finish the storyline ASAP. The guns are limited to common russian made ones, but thats due to the setting itself.

Still highly recommended.

Operation Flashpoint and Rainbow Six 3. Those are two of my favourites too. I should get a better PC and try Verdun...
