Because after 1934, any gun which can fire more than one cartridge with one triggerpull was defined as a machinegun and had to be registered with the birth of the National Firearms Act.

In 1986, the registry was closed for civilians and no new machineguns could be registered, thus, the existing machineguns skyrocketed in price.
These guns are expensive because they're legal, if you were to steal a legal and registered AK47 (an actual full-auto one), it's price would drop from $30000 on the legal market, to maybe $1000 on the illegal market, and that's if you can find someone who wants to buy it, assault rifles are actually not very common in American crime

Police can register as many machineguns as their department budget allows, and military doesn't even have to register theirs with the NFA to my knowledge, so they just pay the actual real cost of the weapons to whoever makes them.

It sucks, but full-auto requires some special practice and training to use in a way that's worthwhile.
In the US Army, they almost exclusively use their M16s in semi-auto because in 9 out of 10 shooting engagements, it's the most practical way to go.

You can buy a very good AK or AR15 for under $1000 and it will be 100% legal for you to own and for protecting yourself with, you can go out and practice and enjoy them however you please, becoming proficient in their use, and you don't risk 10 years in jail because of ATF faggotry.

Seriously, they can do like 99% of what the actual military rifle can do.
With a some practice and range time, you could easily achieve 1 to 2 aimed shots a second, which is a thousand times deadlier than just sweeping in full-auto without any training, semi-auto is incredibly practical.
