Questions about ROTC.

If you go the ROTC route, are you just getting a normal 4 year college degree + extra military classes, or how does it work?

You are not guaranteed a commission on graduation correct?

What happens if you are not given a commission after completing ROTC?

>>
>>32789198
Here's what it is:
Standard marines>standard army
Marine infantry>reg army infantry
Army SOF>MARSOC
Then army has tier 1 and a bunch of other stuff. Basically, marines are better than normal army, but army has the paths to go higher
>>

>are you just getting a normal 4 year college degree + extra military classes
Yes
At my uni it's a once (or twice, I forget) a week classroom course and 3 days a week basic fitness at 0630.
You are not guaranteed a commission, but they don't decide it at the end of your four years. You get 'contracted' at some point during or after sophmore year, so you'll know whether or not you're gonna make it,
Scholarships are very competitive so don't count on one. But the contract I believe may get your tuition paid.
>what happens if you are not given a commission
You would have to stick with ROTC classes through senior year while failing the whole time, you'd drop the courses before getting to that point.
>>
>>32789239
SFAS is physically demanding, but the q course is more mental.I've heard SEALs personally say Ranger school is harder than BUD/S, and most sf guys wash out of ranger school, but you rarely see a bat guy fail SFQC. So I'd say Ranger School (with rasp), BUD/S, SF

Yes certainly, if you're in school and passing the courses, you're set. Next you would just have to worry about getting contracted, which if you're doing well in the ROTC courses, you will.

I stopped laughing, looked at him and just said "No" and walked off. The silence from him told me he knew I was right.

>>
>>32789754

Most of the PFTs are run based. As long as pushups/pullups are easy for you, you'll have a def headstart on your peers.
>>
>>32789781
Cool. I can knock out about 80 push ups in 2 minutes and easily 15-18 pull ups. I'll definitely start running a lot more.
>>
>>32789800
if you can run a 2miler in 13 min, or around there, that's a max pt score
>>
>>32789800
>running a lot more
This, it's pretty much the thing that kills people when they get to boot camp. They can do pushups and situps fine, but if you can't run your shins will attempt to murder your ass. You do NOT want to go to the medical flight to recover for a stress fracture, you'll lose your mind.
>>
>>32789800

I always found that I struggled on the run a lot more than strength - make sure you focus on form too.

I'm out of shape according to the AF because of the running, but strength was easy, which has been a big barrier to me trying to cross train AFSCs.

Is biking a good way to condition yourself into it, or should I just straight up dive into the treadmill?
>>
>>32789841

Tread for intervals, run outside for distance. Depending on the surface - you may have to build your shins up. Go for time, rather than miles ran at first, that way you don't feel bad when you you have bad slow days at first.
>>
>>32789841
How much do you run? C25K from day 1 if you "run" twice a year, start at the bottom and work your way up. If you run every other week, start at about week 3. Don't do biking, it won't help as much as just getting your legs used to running.
>>
>>32789841
I've always had a serious personal problem with treadmills, they don't work for me. I don't like that I don't have to push off on a treadmill, and that makes running outside a lot harder
>>
>>32789863
Back when I first starting (again, about 3-4 years back) I would usually knock out a mile in about 8 minutes and change before starting my actual workout.

What >>32789854
said makes a lot of sense, though. Condition yourself by running for a set amount of time and then gradually increase your speed.
>>
/fit/ is not help so can anyone here tell me how to improve my running? im not super out of shape but i cant run a mile without stopping

i hear sprinting helps but what distance/reps should i be doing that?
>>
>>32789885
oh i see the last few posts are about running.
>>
>>32789885
Run with a friend, that always helps.
>>
>>32789885

So I've been struggling on my runs for a while ever since I packed weight on for muscle/ruck marches. Doing intervals, and then a long run on the weekend helped for me - tread helped since I could actively speed myself up each time slightly.
>>
>>32789917
>Doing intervals
can you give me a basic schedule or something like that? im just starting to condition myself and have no experience
>>
Anyone here a naval aviator or SNA? How did you guys prep for your ASTB?
>>
>>32789965

Back when I wanted to hooah hooah Air Assault as an AF cadet, I did intervals in 400m, 800m for goal pace, with a minute or two walking break in between for a total of 3 mi running time.

Mon - Interval Runs
Tues - Back/Bis
Wed - Interval Run
Thurs - Chest/Tri
Fri - Long Run
Sat - Legs/Ruck
Sun - Rest or Swim

If you ever pick up the SOFlete workout, that shit is pretty ridiculous too. I just got to the point where I can do the warmup and still have energy for the rest of the workout.
>>
How fast should my 2mile be at the start of RASP? It's like 13:00 if I push myself, but that's not after pushups, situps, and pullups
>>
>>32790265

>>
>>32790353
Yeah but to go to school it's under 39. And you're going to be running in rasp way more than when you get to battalion so your final rasp run is probably going to be faster than you'll ever be again.
>>
>>32789885
Sprinting is retarded unless you're already a very advanced runner. The best way to improve your run is to simply run long distance at a moderate intensity. Seriously just keep fucking running consistently and your run will improve. Running is probanly the easiest thing to improve but it has a huge hump to pass before you really get started. Do couch to 5k or whatever and just keep scaling up until you can run for 5 miles. Then run 5 miles 2 or 3 times a week and try to improve your time. THEN you can start considering sprints.

The SFQC and SFAS both is difficult because of how you can get fucked from any angle. Academically, physically, and by random luck that cadre doesn't like you. So many things can fuck you over in the SFQC. Every phase is demanding and is not easy by any means.

Army boots are on the ground first every time, often weeks before the Marines arrive.

The Marines have expeditionary capability, they do NOT have rapid deployment capability.

The Army is better equipped and better trained across the board. They can fill more roles and do it more effectively.

The only reason the Marines have become "the second ground force" is that we don't actually use them for what they're intended for anymore.

>From what I understand, the army is mainly an occupation force.
>The marines are a strike force.

Here's a pro tip anon, and I'm not shitting on you personally:

Whenever anyone ever attempts to explain anything about the military to you and they start with

"Basically X branch/MOS/unit is..."

you can safely disregard everything they are about to say in 99% of cases.

The specific example you present is dumb because the Army and Marine Corps are both combined arms organizations. They both have armor, arty, infantry/mech infantry, air craft, and even small watercraft. And then they both have parallel combat support and service support units.

Organizationally they are different, but they are combined arms organizations capable of meeting pretty much the same mission set.

If, for example, you look at a Marine mech infantry company and an Army mech infantry company, they are going to have identical METLs (Mission Essential Task Lists).
>>
>>32793117
Yes, it's true.

You will go through the 35M school house. At the end of it you will have the 35M skill level 1 MOS.

Then you will go to Basic Airborne Course. Then you will have the skill modifier for airborne and you jump wings.

Then you will go to RASP. If you wash out you still keep those other two things.

>>
>>32793981
>Was looking for more info on how both work.
In the navy you test on the knowledge of your job. Then that score you get factors into your total ability to rank up. Other things are time in rate, awards, evals points, PNA points and some other stuff. At the end of the day the most important thing is to get into a rate that is undermanned and hard to get cause they will be promoting at a very high % considering they need to fill slots.
At least thats the way it was but theyre in the process of overhauling the whole system and im not sure what changes theyll be making.
You said you were looking at IT but im assuming youre open to crypto/intelligence type jobs?

cont. If you are the female anon asking about this:

Any gain you're going to get from AAS will come with a slew of permanent medical side effects that the vast majority of men who use gear aren't going to experience.

So you will probably be able to keep up with the middle of the pack of guys at an infantry unit, maybe. But in return you're going to fuck yourself up totally. Just to have your T levels a little below most men. And you're going to look like you're on gear, so you'll probably get targeted for a urinalysis.

Recently lost my job as a Dental Assistant due to budget cuts in the office I worked at. I'd like to find another job as a dental assistant but the job market is pretty flooded where I live. (Shreveport, LA, if you're curious) I'm also considering joining the military because I feel it would be a bit more stable income wise and it is something I've kinda had in the back of my mind for a while. No, the two to four years are your basic training. There is a 4 week LTC (leadership training course), and if you're doing well in class standing you can go to different courses during your summers like basic airborne or air assault.

If you do Simultaneous Membership Program (enlist in a reserve or national guard unit while in ROTC) you will go to basic training. And then you'll start wearing the cadet rank at your unit. You will be treated with general military courtesies, but most enlisted will laugh at you behind your back because you'll probably be a dumb fuck.

Crypto - Code making/breaking. Cryptolinguistics is basically where language skills meet intel. Not all linguists are cryptolinguists. If you're just translating and not doing intel stuff, you're an interpreter which is its own field.

IT - "Signals" in the Army, "Cyber" in the Air Force. This is tech maintenance and support. Everything from the basic physical work (laying out spools of cable) to the complex high-level stuff (global network architecture).

Cyber - Everywhere but the Air Force, "cyber" carries the connotation of cyberwarfare. This is what USCYBERCOMMAND does, as well as its subordinate elements. That means fighting wars in the cyber domain, not just maintaining equipment for other efforts. That includes both defense and offense.

>>32794506

I've met some good technical Marines, but on the whole those fields aren't easy to access and they're generally treated like shit. They get promoted slower, and get less training/experience. I'd recommend any other branch, including the Coast Guard, over Marines if you're interested in doing nerd stuff.

EOD is a pretty intense meme. A lot of people signed up after watching The Hurt Locker, but with the wars winding down they're kicking out EOD left and right.

It's a job field that was pretty much created in the early-2000s when we had a fuckton of people dying to IEDs. Now that we're not fighting those wars anymore, they're realizing that EOD can go back to being a tiny piece of the force.

Any anons have any tips for osut? Im going 31B, MP, and would like some advice from people who arent my recruiters.

I got shafted into a 5 year contract with an 8k bonus. I was trying to push them into giving me a 4 year, no bonus, but they wouldnt budge on it for the past 2 months. Originally I wanted to get 31K, dog handler, but its too fucking rare. So I settled on MP.

My PT score is 80 across the line, so im not too worried about that.

Does anyone know about any of the extra schools and trainings MP can do? And if im able to sign up or put in a packet for them during OSUT, or have to wait until first duty station? The reason I chose MP specifically is because I want to attend these extra schools.

Im going enlisted because I got bills to pay, and there was no guarantee for MP officer in active or reserves. I want to eventually do CID, or NCIS, or similar once Im done. I cant apply for them now because I need money and dont have the option of waiting 1+ year for a call back. Ive already wasted 6 months trying to go officer and waiting for 31K. I already have a shitty bachelors degree in computer science and I plan to work on a CJ type masters while im in, probably forensics of some sort.

>manual razor
>manual

Lets get one important thing out of the way first:

I have a pretty sensitive body, but I've never had a problem with shaving. I use cheap disposable razors with economy shaving cream, and basic after shave. I usually shave sideways as well.

>budget
I mainly use Bic disposable razors, their single bladed ones worked perfectly for military shaving and if I shaved against the grain I could even pass through two inspections in a row without getting caught. Big chance of cutting yourself though.
>mid tier
Bic also make cartridge razors. They work, not the best I've used but none has been this cheap though and they are quite usable.
>consumer retard grade
Gillette's cartridge razors are the best I've used and they are very safe againt cutting yourself. But they are very expensive and you basically have to shave twice if you want anything near a close shave. They are better for civilian life since time and daily comfort is more important than worrying about a sergeant measuring how tall your chin lawn is with a ruler every morning.

I mean, after all, they are designed for business men to intentionally leave a slight stubble that will show how much hair they have to show off their man-level while also giving the impression of a guy who is professionally maintaining his exterior.

You dont know enough to know that that question is impossible to answer. People need to realize the military is a huge company with hundreds of different jobs and situations man.
It can all differ based on your rate, command type, captain, budget situation and so on. Theres really no way to tell.
If we want we can assume youll be a standard sea going rate and be on a normal ship for arguments sake though.
>Studying
Well when youre deployed its nearly impossible. Youre so busy most of the time and when you arent youre gonna want to sleep and when you hit port youre gonna wanna go apeshit. When youre stateside though its definitely possible.

Question for you all.

I am prior enlisted and ETS'd from active duty as an infantryman in December. I was in the Cav, so I didn't deploy and wasted 3 years dicking around not doing shit. I thought for sure I was done for good, but now that I'm going to school in the Fall, I'm thinking about doing ROTC. So I have a few questions:

Does time in ROTC count as time in service?
Do I get any extra pay for being prior enlisted if I do end up getting a commission?
How hard is it to get an active infantry slot?
>>
>>32796742
>You get a big bonus for re enlisting right?
Depends.

>Why would anyone enlist for 8 years over 4?
I think you may be confused.

When you enlist in the US military you are enlisting for 8 years. What you "negotiate" with your recruiter and MEPS, however, is how much of that time will be spent Active Duty/Active Reserve/Active Guard and how much of that time will be spent in the Individual Ready Reserve (you're not required to report to any unit but you can still be called up to active duty).

The most common is a 4/4 split.

>know whether to join the navy, or just get a job as a cargo sailor or fisherman
Why not both?
Join the Navy and do your 4 then get out with a load of experience and you can go from there in any direction you want
ALSO
Considering your plan BM is perfect cause BMs do lots of things with seamanship and dirving the ship so thatd set you up perfectly to go Merchant marines fi you want. Not gonna lie BM is a tough thankless job but if your plan is to go into General sailoring after the navy its the perfect job to prepare you for it.

I've been prepping myself for OCS. Need to still go talk to recruiters. However what's better, Army or Navy? I have a particular affinity to the Navy. Great Grandfather was an Admiral of the Ottoman Mediterranean fleet.

I've heard that with the Navy people get bored quick, and with the Army people get tired quick.

Not sprinting as such but interval training is very valuable for getting a run time down, 400, 800, 1200 meter runs with a goal time at or below the pace you are targeting. Don't do this kind of training every day however, or if you do for a while take a proper rest on completion.

Pack fitness becomes more important than running, even though that kind of mid distance running is a good indicator of overall endurance and a good way to vaguely train it.

True endurance is a mental game and every time you complete a long ruck or run while sleep deprived, hung over or otherwise dehydrated or in a field environment the next one will only look easier. The military will give you plenty of chances to make these mental gains but start making a habit of never quitting

What's it like to finish college while in the military? Are you guaranteed a spot in OCS if they know you're actively working towards your degree while you're enlisted, or is it better to get your diploma and then talk to a recruiter after?

Got Bachelors and Masters in the Army, but I was a desk job and had no social life. If you're not in a desk job and want to do anything except study in your off-time, expect it to take a long time to get degrees.

While you're in service, tuition assistance only covers $4k/year too. You can get a little more from grants/scholarships, but you aren't going to be going anywhere expensive without taking out some loans.

Depends on what you want, anon. Officers get better compensation, get treated better, and have far more autonomy. They also get less career control and have an entirely different focus.

The recruiters at the army station I visited told me that if I enlisted in the Army then I would come in as a Specialist with an E4 pay rank because I have a Bachelor's Degree.

>>
>>32803610

Higher pay is the big thing.

Theoretically it means you can try for E-5 faster. Realistically, most people who join at E-4 still don't get E-5 until they've been in 3+ years.

I see. Now that I remember it, I think one of the recruiters also mentioned that my sign on bonus could be bigger because of my degree too.

german fag here,
thought about joining our military for 4 or 4 1/2 years after I finish HS next year.
Should I go enlistened (Mannschaften) or lower NCO (Unteroffizier)?
Enlistened positions open are mostly regular grunt jobs (infantry, combat medic, AF security forces).
The NCO positions I consider would be repairman for avionics, repairmen for jet engines and signal intelligence analyst (35N).
What should I choose?

>Whats wrong with a masters in something like computer forensics?

You didn't specify computer forensics.

And where I'm at the computer forensics graduate programs is under the Computer Science department, not Criminal Justice.

Mostly because CJ and CJ degrees are a literal meme. Unless you are a cop right now who needs civilian education to move up within your agency, I would avoid CJ degrees. If you're trying to go federal, specifically FBI, they are looking for specific skills. I.E. not CJ educations.

>Inb4 the same anon from last time talks about how majority of applicants are CJ degree holders

Well no fucking duh, but that doesn't tell the whole story. You have to look at the percentage of people who get hired with CJ vs how may with CJ apply and compare it to people with non CJ degrees who get hired vs those who apply.

And I'm telling you this straight from the mouth of two FBI human resources people (who are agents with experience working in the field but were doing a tour in HR) I talked to in the Hoover building.

>i would have applied for a job at fbi or some shit and waited the whole year for a call back. But i have no money, so i am enlisting to save up money.

Well they could be talking about the Active Reserve, which means you go to drill once a month at a unit and are supposed to do AT (active duty for training) two weeks a year.

>If you are in reserve do you still get payed?

If you are in the Active Reserve, yes. If you're in the Individual Ready Reserve (Inactive Reserve), no.

>Does being in reserve mean you are free to live a normal civilian life? Get a job all that?

Yes, but if you're in the Active Reserve (actively drilling with a unit) you're required to show up to Drill and you're required to go to AT. And you can get orders to deploy.

>>32800153
>And what kind of prospects open up after the military in the civilian world, especially as a former officer.

Anything that gives veteran preference unless it's specifically applicable to what you did in the military.

But, and I think this is important and should probably be in the OP, being in the military and getting out IS NOT A GUARANTEE OF EMPLOYMENT IN THE CIVILIAN WORLD REGARDLESS OF MOS. You need to make yourself employable because you're not only competing with fellow veterans for jobs but you're competing with non veteran civilians for jobs, and it's likely your civilian peers have been building up specific experience and education in their field while you were dicking around cleaning the company area and sometimes shooting guns.

I haven't been in during a war, but I can tell you that the peace time Marine Corps in the air-wing is absolutely horrendous and the military as a whole is infected. There's so much fucked up shit I can't even list or remember all of it. It's overflowing with politically correct bullshit and completely inept leaders.

Let's just say, as an example, Marine A is going on meritorious promotion board to get promoted to Corporal. He looks great on paper. He's got a 300 CFT/289 PFT, 23 MCI's completed, and expert on the range, but none of that matters because one of the other Marines that got sent to the board is female. It doesn't matter what she looks like on paper, and there will usually be at least one on a board because most of them get to the fleet and kiss as much ass as humanly possible. I'm not saying every female in the military is like this, but it is entirely possible for them to fuck their way to the top and I've seen many female Corporals that have only been in the fleet for 1-2 months. It just ends up in a dysfunctional command structure because no one respects them, most people laugh at them, and I personally tell them to fuck off if they try to tell me how to do my job.
