Set the kill bar after positioning the trap. Locate traps along walls and other natural rodent egress routes. If necessary create artificial funnels to traps. A trap that doesn't go off within twenty four hours should be relocated, as it's not a utilized path.

We had a mouse, ignored traps and poison.. actually ate the cheese off of one and left some ball hair on it.

Trap went off after I picked it up, scared me because I didn't think I set it right.

Ended up taking in a stray cat, no rodent or insect problems anymore.

I have a filthy friend, his house was infested. I don't enjoy hanging in an infested place so I set his traps religiously. I had the same apprehensive nature setting the traps, eventually I found the best way to defeat it was to expect it to snap when you let go. If you expect the trap to snap when you let go, it won't shock you. Good luck OP.
