What can /k/ tell me about these? I've been thinking of adding an AK to my collection for awhile now and I completely refuse to fall for the American AK meme. Since anything quality is well over a grand, I've been thinking of this as an alternative.

Is it worth it?
Anyone here own one?
What can you guys tell me?
>>
i can only say that its ugly as balls
>>
>>32781417
czechs thumbed their noses as soviet union, used their relatively robust domestic arms industry to crank out this thing instead of the AKs they were supposed to

It's fine but it's not an AK

>anything quality is well over a grand
No. New Arsenal SLR107-11 is $850MSRP, soon to be much lower from retailers.
WASR can be had for $600
>>
>>32781417
they use different mags which is my only complaint.
>>
>>32781417
Stock, it's a better, more accurate, more versatile AK that's better built and much more versatile than the normal AK.

However, it uses different mags, it's smaller than an AK, and there's fuck all in terms of aftermarket compared to the AK family.

It should be seen as a fun quasi-milsurp oddity like the PTR or modern FAL derivatives, but they're being gobbled up and thoroughly molested by tacticool mall ninja types as a loophole gun most everywhere in the US and Canada where the AK is banned by name.

It's overall a pretty adequate rifle, short-stroke gas-piston, tilting bolt, striker-fired, it's nothing at all like an AK, doesn't share it's magazines even, but it can do a lot of the same things.
Some will argue that it's "better" than an AK, but I think the hype is a bit overblown, it's just a rifle like many others, and there happens to be nothing really wrong with it.

The action is wide open, which makes it easy to clear any potential malfunctions, but on the other hand, that means there's really nothing to stop dirt from getting inside if you were to say, drop it in a pigstye. Most people won't ever drop their rifle in horrible horrible mud though, so for any kind of civilian use, this really isn't a concern.

Accuracy is acceptable.
Aftermarket is small.
The gun gets hotter faster than an AK (the handguards don't do a lot to shield from heat)
The magazines are lightweight, but a bit bulky.
The action is cut to accept SKS stripper clips, so you can do that if you want to.
If you lived in California, which banned bullet buttons, you could lock a 10rd magazine in place and then use stripper clips to load it, while still having a pistol grip.
Has an actual, functioning bolt hold-open, unlike any ComBloc AK (no, the follower on Yugo mags holding the bolt carrier in place doesn't count as a real bolt hold-open).
>>
>>32784714
>The action is wide open

True, but I also stated it was kind of an insignificant thing anyway, you don't often get your rifle caked in mud even in the military, so it's not that much of a concern.

I fucking love my VZ2008. Never had a problem with it, beyond having to finagle a quadrail on. I've found it easier to be accurate with it than an AK, though I won't claim it is objectively more accurate.

Also, because it has a bolt hold open, you can install an extended hold open/release, giving AR-like controls.

Yeah, anything other than a slant should help immensely.
I'd rather have a muzzle nut than a slant brake. It's barely even a brake. Whoever thought it was a good idea to put that on a gun was thinking purely of cost savings and not the ill effects they have.
>>
>>32787730
Well the slant brake originated on the AKM in Russia, and their doctrine for the rifle was first and foremost rapid and full-auto fire, I'm guessing the idea is to help fight muzzle climb.

A weird one. Only one I know of but I don't know everyone. Pps43c pistol with the barrel extended and the reciever cut a d welded on a wood stocked reciever end piece to run a full stock. Ala a pps from Poland in 52ish
>>
>>32788571
>â–¶
it looks like a regular pps43 pistol that had the welded on stock for importation cut off and a regular stock put on, along with a longer barrel, probably required a aow stamp.
there was a lot of them for sale cheap a few years ago i wanted to get one if i could totally remove the stock from it but it was a bit of a legal grey area if it could be taken off or not because releasing it from the receiving and it being able to function as a stock was a federal crime, that and ammo seemed impossible to find in my area unless you want to shop online
looks like this ones stock has an extension that fits inside the receiver and screws into place

It's right there in the image.

It's a VZ58 in 5.56x45mm, it has a magwell conversion installed to take 5.56x45mm AR magazines, the magazines in question are LAR15 "pistol" magazines, and in Canada, pistol magazines can have 10 round capacity, compared to the 5 round capacity that semi-auto rifles can otherwise have.

There are two of the LAR15 magazines, they're attached to each other by the bottom (with a MagWedge), to allow for quick reloads (a lot like jungle taped mags actually), together, the loaded 10 round magazines are roughly in the shape of a 30 round magazine.

You can get the same arrangement in 7.62x39mm, using AR style 10 round "pistol" magazines as well, pic related. Also these magazines can be made to work with a magwell adapter on an SKS, this would allow you to have 10 round capacity in it like intended.
>>
Iv got a Vz.2008 and I've enjoyed it so far. Haven't been able to take it past 50m yet but I find it comfortable to shoot and easy to handle. I replaced the folding stock with a solid one. My only gripe about the gun is the gas system, it blows directly into the space under the fore grip, which means that you get a metric shit ton of fouling under the grips and they heat up pretty quick. Take down and cleaning are piss easy though, and the bolt hold open is great since most of the ranges near me are super anal retentive about making people keep their bolts open if the gun is not actively being fired.

They're perfectly alright and serviceable.
They're not QUITE as simple and idiotproof as an AK, but they're pretty close, it's very close to an SKS mechanically, and it's even lighter in weight than the average AK.

I wouldn't say myself that it's the best of the best, but there's nothing outright wrong with the rifle and if it's the only rifle you had, you would be very adequately equipped. The ammunition is cheap and though 7.62x39mm doesn't have as much range or as flat of a trajectory as 5.56x45mm or 5.45x39mm it's a dependable performer within 400yds and hits pretty hard, you can easily hunt deer or boar with this rifle.

I guess I'd run down a checklist:

>Do you want a rifle that is easy to shoot, handle and take care of?
>Do you want a rifle that's fun to shoot?
>Do you want a rifle that has cheap and good ammunition and magazines?
>Do you want a rifle that can put out a lot of firepower fast?
>Do you want a rifle that can be used for hunting medium game?
>Do you want a rifle that can do all the basic things a combat rifle needs to be able to do?
>Do you want a rifle that's an interesting piece of 20th Century history?

The VZ58 does all those things adequately.

I'd recommend a fixed or AR style collapsing stock (I guess it depends on what kind of aesthetic you're looking for) for a nicer cheekweld and length of pull. Folding stocks are cool, but they're not always the most comfortable, Eastern Europeans (particularly back in those days), are of smaller stature, and the length of the stock is fit for them, if you're a Big Guy, and a westerner, there's a chance the stock might feel a bit too short for you. Easy to fix, but do keep it in mind.

Also I would recommend either taking off the slant-cut muzzlebrake and leaving a thread-protector, or replacing it with a birdcage flash hider, it will improve your accuracy.

All it really needs is a birdcage flash hider and a railed dust cover for a clean and utilitarian modern look.
>>
>>32788778
>>32788737
Step one. Make barrel 16.1 inches. Step 2. Cut folding stock weld. Boom you would have been done making a folder rifle. I didn't want the folder so my guns step 2 was cutting the rear of the reciever off since the wood stock end is completely different. Step 3. Weld up new rear step 4. Refinish.

Pistol to rifle is easy for guns no stamp required.
Rifle to pistol no stamp requires cutting the reciever into 3 pieces to destroy it and then re welding it to create a new gun.

Black rifles are just more expensive in Canada, anything self-loading, centerfire and feeding from detachable magazines will usually cost more up there than in America, unless it's some old milsurp junk like an SVT40, or something a Hi-Point or like those KelTec economy rifles, which are real cheap in America, but still cost a few hundred too fucking much on average in Syrupland.

If you can find a nice black rifle for 1000CD or less you've got a pretty good deal.

Yeah, they're cool like that.

What I would do is to just leave a 10rd mag locked in, and then use SKS stripper clips to load from the breech, the gun would then be like a nicer and lighter SKS with a pistol grip (it's also way easier to fire from a bench or while prone with the shorter mag).
Plus, if you ever leave California, or if the laws change, you can have the maglock removed and use magazines like normal.

I suppose if you could find one of those clear plastic mags in 10rd capacity, that might look pretty cool to see it fill when you strip a clip into it.
Also just loading or topping off an empty or half full magazine with loose individual cartridges is easily done on the VZ58 with the wide open breech.

It's really not an AK. They may look similar cosmetically but mechanically they are definitely not the same gun.
>>
>>32794547
Yeah ive noticed that about CGN
>>
>>32795927
Yes. Muzzle devices cannot have advertised or claimed muzzle flash reducing qualities.

Or just move to northern california, enjoy the oregon-like terrain, and never give a shit ever again
>>
>>32795927
Yes, though I would highly recommend a different kind of muzzle-brake over the slant-cut one you often get with these rifles, your groupings will thank me.

There's alot to love. It is more accurate than an AK, lighter despite being milled steel, and very compact. It's phenomenal, in my opinion. I say that as a guy who owns a Galil Ace, AR15, X95 Tavor and a CSA VZ58. Of all my guns, it is probably my favorite.

Mine has been extensively modified, including a side mounted rail, cerakote, aluminum quad rail, Ronin grip, and the new Zhukov stock + adapter from RSRegulate. Additionally, it contains ambi mag release + LRBHO controls.

Compared to my AR15 and my Tavor X95 it is more ergonomic in terms of battery of arms. Outside of the initial charging of the weapon, everything I need can be done with my right hand index finger. Drop the mag, release the bolt, fire the weapon etc.

It's extremely small and very pointable. As far as accuracy, it is superlative for a 7.62x39.

It's amazing, in short. You will pay for this, though, but compared to high end ARs or Tavors it is reasonable.

Well, what you could do is ask a woodsmith to forge some nice wood furniture for you, then have it properly oiled/shellacked, if you want a more oldschool look. If you give him your furniture parts as reference he should be able to copy the shape and make them so they would fit (or you could have him make something of your own).

There exists wood furniture sets commercially, but I don't know how common they are, I saw one on EBay for like 300USD

They're around. Same with FALs, AKs, etc. You just have to know the right people. For example, there'sa shit-ton of L1A1s in-country that came in without papers. It's just that most people who have one will never discuss them unless they trust you.
>>
I bought the $399 deal from psa a few years ago when it was the rifle, bayo + scabbard, 5 magazines + mag pouch, cleaning kit, etc.

probably my greatest purchase ever considering what I got for the money

I kinda want to shoot a czechpoint vz to see how they compare, but I wouldn't buy one unless they bring back the vz58 cqb (15.4in barrel)

I had one of these back when they were $400. It was perfectly fine, but I just never cared for it. I sold it for a slight profit and bought a PTR instead because that's what I always wanted. It's like the Toyota Camry of rifles, it is dependable and affordable, but probably won't ever inspire great love.
>>
>>32806729
>but probably won't ever inspire great love.
While they do the same things overall, the vz2008 definitely will not inspire great love. It's rough and scratchy feeling, and not fitted especially well.
The real deal, however, has me wrapped around it's finger.
>>
>>32807169
>>32806729
How do both of them compare?
>>
>>32808340
Well, the PTR GI(no rail, button mag release) is only $130 more, and it's got a lot more aftermarket surplus parts, depends on what you want really. .308 vs 7.62x39, PTR is much larger, different operating system, etc.
>>
>>32808622
No, I don't mean the PTR91 rifles, I know their glory, I mean both of the Vz58s, they were of different build quality, depending on when you got them.
>>
>>32808809
Oh, I had the vz2008, there was nothing wrong with it as far as I could tell. It went bang everytime.

as an owner of a 2008, I would love to find someone locally with an actual Czech made gun to compare them.
I love my 2008 and have had zero problems with it (I didn't get the trigger reset gremlin that a lot of guys get) and it cycles so smoothly that I can't imagine a CZ cycling any smoother.
but I'd love to find out.

Czechoslovakia was the rebel child of the Warsaw Pact, and almost everything they did was in spite of the USSR. They designed their weapons to conform to the mothership's standards as loosely as possible, and dragged their feet in almost every other decision.

This served two purposes:
1. To complicate the USSR's logistics
2. To stimulate domestic production and make them more self sustaining (in case the pact should fall apart)

The USSR fought them over the vz.52, which was the Czech compliment to the SKS and was entirely proprietary including in cartridge. This resulted in the vz.57 which was chambered in 7.62x39 and also the precedent that they would at least have to use the same cartridge as everyone else.
>>
>>32782199

good lord what the fuck did you do to that AK?
>>
>>32813149
As an owner of a cz vz58, the vz2008 is still a great gun.
But you'll just have to see for yourself. The real deal just feels luxury in comparison. Everything is so smooth in the action, and everything fits perfectly.

>Canadians all come out of the woodwork

Anybody here with the GI Mag adapter for their 5.56 one? Mine tends to work pretty well, but I noticed that if I use mags without the anti-tilt follower that the rounds on the right side of the mag will strike the face of the barrel instead of the feed ramp. This will shear the face of the round usually, leaving some copper shavings in the rifle.

I was thinking of grinding the feed ramp a bit to give a larger face for the bullet to ride up into the chamber, as the bullet seems to impact a few mm to the right of the existing ramp. Any other ideas?

I liked my VZ2008 but I had the gremlin problem and didn't feel like trying to contact that guy on the forum that did welding of the tab to solve it so I traded it for a truck during the Sandy Hoax hype. Paid $449 for it and I got a nice truck so I'm still happy. Someday I'll buy a Czechpoint VZ58.
