The 1911 is a pretty basic pistol. Watch this video and dont store it in a soft case or foam padded case as the foam and cloth can hold moisture and rust guns pretty quickly

hose down with WD40 to dissolve any crap, clean with toothbrush, hose down more, wipe down with clean patches till no residual dirt comes off any more then oil down the gun and put back back in case, preferably in a zip lock bag.

it leaves behind oil when the volatile petroleum evaporates. you know oil, that shit you use to lessen friction in high wear parts? in any case, I said to wipe all the WD40 off till the gun is clean and then apply oil.

yep. worst part about it is how easy it is to reassemble now. This was babbys very first 1911.
When I first tried field stripping and reassembling, I had to fight and struggle like hell to get the slide lever back in place, of course scratched the fuck out of the frame.

Now its so damn easy, I never come close to causing a scratch again. But I don't even know why I was struggling before.

You didn't know how the parts fit together. Same reason guys have trouble with new guns. Always field strip and mimic movements on your gun before using her, it'll teach you how it works and help make your troubleshooting better.

But back to the question, look up youtube videos on how to disassemble it and clean it if its just dirty, then maybe shoot it a couple times a year so it doesnt feel neglected.

When you shoot it, clean it. When you store it, put some good oil on it, not remoil. M-pro 7 is really good for this.
