Call me a faggot, but video games and popular gun culture tell me that the Aug and FAMAS are the coolest 2 bullpups ever.

Sadly, this leaves very little room for any other bullpups. Anything tavor makes is overpriced garbage, and keltec is laughable.

No they were a good idea. But the countries that mattered already had service rifles, and as we see today don't care about ballistic efficacy, they want what they are used to, and they want it short. To them the benefits of the bullpup layout aren't worth the switch, which would be a monumental effort.

They are a good idea if you care about both velocity amd compactness, but some if not most only value compactness, which is why we have SBRs

adoption of the m4 was a mistake, bullpups are cool but come with advantages and disadvantages compared to lets say a m16. if a bullpup came along when the US was using m14 it would have had a good chance of getting adopted. look at the countries that use bullpups, they had a not shitty battle rifle before so there adoption of the 5.56 was later and they went with bullpups

The advantages gained by shortening the OAL weren't really meaningful when matched against the quality concerns and field ergonomics issues.
They're not bad, they're just suboptimal, and trading one suboptimal service weapon for another is pointless, especially in huge armies like the US and Russia where logistics becomes a major issue
