What is the best caliber for a durr rifle?

308
or mosin

Just about anything in 30 cal. is fine.

If the durr's remains retain their molecular cohesion, you require more dakka.
>>
Theres no "best" caliber
How far are you shooting?
Where do you live?[Size of deer]
How good of a shot are you?
>>
.50 BMG or .22LR
>>
>>32770947
Just use .223
>>
>>32770963
This is true but 308 will do the job really well in a lot of places as will the 270 so two cheap (relatively) and available options. For my area its largely 30-30 but the woods are dense and cover 3 counties
>>
>>32770775
10mm
>>
There was some guy talking about how a well placed 22lr can drop a deer.
Namely, penetrate its spinal column and drop it. Maybe an eyeshot or a couple other places would work too.
That takes skill.

I doubt /k/ goes in for skill based activities, though.
Mankind became the apex predator of apex predators with the advent of the spear. Only time firearm utilization qualifies as skill is when someone is shooting back.
If gun enthusiasts want to up the ante they use a bow, which is still easy, a $2k composite with reticule means you call kill shit with half an hours self instruction.

So, in my opinion, if hunting for you is a hobby not a chore, use the most challenging means with which you can reliably and humanely dispatch the animal.

>5.56 will blow a deer apart

when will this meme end?

probably when the average buck gets large enough so that it doesn't get blown apart by one, fagtron

I have shot deer with Hornady 5.56 75gr TAP and Barnes 300BLK 110gr TAC-TX at 50 yards.... My hunting area is thick woods without the opportunity for distance shots.

Both rounds hit the vitals. Both rounds dropped the deer like a sack of onions.

Shot placement is key. That said, I would prefer a more flatter shooting round like 300WM at distance.

Pic related is the entry and exit wound through the rib cage of a Barnes 110gr copper memeout round.

You don't go to a nightclub and judge people for being drunk
>>
>>32770916
kinda scraping the bottom of the barrel, but you can make it work inside 100m
>>
>>32771500

Do you want prions? Because that's how you get prions.
>>
Not legal to use a rifle to shoot bambi's mom in all states

Check your local laws. Your best caliber might be 12ga.
>>
>>32771525

Fokes on you I shoot a Ruger .270 and I've probably downed nicer bucks when I was 12 than you have your whole life, Bubba.
>>
>>32770775

>>

Um? Since when do prions occur from shooting spinal columns
>>
>>32770775
270
>>
>>32771500
>$2k composite with reticule

Yeah... no. Dunno where you got 2k from, most composite I've seen sit at the $100 to $750 range, with some exceptions.
>>
>>32771557
sure thing
>>
>>32770775
Personally I've always preferred .25-06 it's super straight shooting, fast and packs enough of a punch. I use a Bubba'd ww2 Mauser in .25-06 I inherited from my father.

30-30 Ive never seen a buck in the rutt just prance out into the field. They like to hide in the sticks. 30-30 or similar is what you need to push thru the willows at 150 yards. I live in Alberta, so i cant speak for other areas.

I know its a fudd round, but it works.
>>
Comes down to what you like.
>.357 Magnum (if from like an 8" barrel at the least)
>.30-30 (if you like cowboy movies)
>.308 (if you like REAL FUCKIN NATO)
>.30-06 (if you like grandpa rifles)
>.243 (I have nothing to say about this one
>.303 (if you really like tea)
>.270 (if you like a flat shooting cartridge with very long reach)

>>32770916
Can work, but mind the ammo type and distance, it has a bit of a short range, you'll want to stay within 100yds if you can.

>>32771500
>deer
>.22
I mean, it could probably be done, theoretically, but I implore everyone reading to please not try out this theory.
>>
>>32770775
tiddy tiddy

it's also great burr round, it only took me 9 shots to kill the last one.
>>
>>32771711
>9 shots
>to kill burr
>manual repeater
Way too slow and scary for comfort fäm

Unless you can work that lever like Ashley Williams.
>>
why are there no .270 tactical rifles?
>>
>>32771710
>I mean, it could probably be done, theoretically, but I implore everyone reading to please not try out this theory.
Any hunter skilled enough has already thought of it.
Anyone who would try it because I mentioned it doesn't have enough sense to heed your plea.
>>
>>32771513
I don't think there exists any loading for .223 which could split a deer, at the most you could be looking at a big ol' Nam' style wound with M193 ball but that's hardly eviscerating and it'd be a poor choice because of ruined meat. Many would even argue that it's a little bit on the weak side for most deer.

.270 is like .223 with a +2 enchantment and it can't bisect a deer.
>>
>>32771727
I think Noreen might make an AR10 in .270 (as well as .30-06 and .338), but they're mad expensive (the magazines alone are close to $100), and lack a dustcover + ambi charging handle, instead having one attached to the carrier.

It's maybe not so much a tactical fighting rifle as it's a "Oh man, I won the Powerball, I'm gonna buy a new house and the coolest rifle to hunt deer with that I can find!" kind of rifle.
With a nice glass, a .270 one would be a very pleasant long distance target/hunting rifle.

You guys bag on the term "assault" a lot, but "tactical" is far more absurd.
>>
>>32770775
How far are you shooting?
How much will the deer weigh?
Will you need to shoot through brush?
Are you accurate enough to hit the heart or lungs?
How prominent of a blood trail would you like to leave?

I use .25-06 rem because of my answers to those questions. Your answers could wildly change the caliber you should use
>>
>>32770775
Depends on where and what you're hunting.

Mulies across a valley in Idaho, probably .300 Winmag or .30-06. Whitetail across a cut corn field in Missouri, probably .270 or .308. Whitetail innawoods in West Virginia, probably .30-30 or .243.

I love my grandpa rifle. This is actually my great-great-uncle rifle. 1937 Winchester 70 in .30-06 with a Lyman peep sight.

He worded it weirdly. What he's saying is that some states don't allow rifle cartridge, or at least only straight-walled cartridges.

Ohio immediately comes to mind, where your only real choices are .357, .44 mag, .45 ACP, or .45-70.

He is correct though. There are 3 states that require shotgun slugs and only shotgun slugs. There are an additional 7 states that have counties that require either shotgun slug or buckshot, and an additional 2 states that you cannot use any bottlenecked rifle rounds and have a minimum bore diameter of .356", limiting you to .38spl and up (and specifically precluding any of the 9mm autoloading pistol rounds, who have a bore diameter of .355")
>>
>>32772012
That's a gorgeous rifle
>>
>>32771500
Inside of 100m a standard or high velocity, 36-40gr .22lr (99.999% of all .22lr made) will reliably penetrate any and all parts of a deer's skull. Their skulls are thin and they have sinus cavities across a lot of the top of the skull, so it's not solid bone.

>>32770775
.243 or .270
Do your own research.
>>
>>32772042
Granted, some of these laws are dumb.
>I can legally hunt deer in my state with .25acp or .14 Squirrel
>I cannot legally hunt deer in my state with .44 Henry, because it's a rimfire round
>I can legally hunt deer in my state with an atlatl or wrist rocket style slingshot with any ammunition, despite them having kinetic energies of potentially below 1FPE
>I cannot legally hunt deer in my state with a modern compound bow set to 34.9lbs due to a minimum draw weight of 35lbs
