If you know how to shoot and know how to zero your sighting system then you should be fine with anything as long as you can see your target.
Magnified optics of any sort help you to see your target better, and many have indicators to help you figure out range and bullet drop a little more precisely, but when it comes down to it all you need to be able to do is see the target, see the sight, know where to hold, and keep your aim steady.

Variables are going to make red dots obsolete for all but sub 100 yard cqb.

They already would be if it wasn't for weight and cost.

Depends on what you consider useful.

It's pretty easy to hit torso-sized steel silhouettes out to 300m with a red dot, and 500m is doable but harder.

I would not consider it useful for hunting or group shooting at 200 yards.
