Some updates for today.

SAA Tiger Forces have managed to capture Um Al-Amad and Tel Rehal and have linked up with Turkish backed rebels , finally cutting off Kurdish access to ISIL held territory in their eastern pocket in Aleppo. This comes as other SAA forces are engaged with ISIL in an attempt to take the town of Al Madyunah from the Islamic organization. SAA forces have managed to push deep into ISIL territory, using the militant's group's fixation on keeping the Turks out of Al Bab in order to capture a number of towns and begin to advance along the M4 highway.

In other news, ISIL has received a large number of reinforcements (approximately 300) in the vicinity of the T4 Airbase in the Homs province. This means that any offensive meant at re-capturing Palmyra will be delayed as SAA forces will have to first halt ISIL's attempt to take the Syrian held airfield before being able to try to re-re take the ancient city.

Lastly. Russian air raids over ISIL held sectors of Deir Ezzor continue, as TU22M3's and various other aircraft have struck targets throughout the militant held corridor. Russians supposedly struck a trade center as well as arms depots, killing both civilians and militants alike. It is unknown how many of them are casualties, but a previous strike killed around thirty people in total.

In Yemen, Houthi forces and their allies have managed to overrun a number of Saudi army bases, killing various troops and capturing Saudi equipment. While the Saudi backed coalition has had troubles in fighting in the mountain regions of the country, they have experienced relative success recently along the coast, as Saudi backed forces have managed to capture the port of Mokah and the Dhubab district as they advance along the Taiz west coast.

Holy shit, looks like Al-Nusra is now in open warfare with Ahrar Al-Sham and the """FSA""" lmao.

For what purpose??? Are all the moderate jihadis tired of getting bombed by the US because of Nusra fags? Don't they know they're all gonna get Trump'd anyway?
>>
>>32762627
My speculation would be that they know they've lost the war and that any support they might have had in the west has dried up, so their best bet now would be to reallign themselves away from the most radical groups in hopes of getting more lenient terms when a peacedeal comes around.

I really wanna do a thesis on comparing Fotini Christia's theory that she used in Former Yugoslavia and Afghanistan and see if it applies in Syria. Her theory on alliance formations in civil wars is pretty interesting. I see a lot of similarities, but I think she didn't factor enough international or outside influence.

Here's a TLDR of her work via a review

eh not quite, Houthi forces have incurred a lot of losses despite pushing the Saudi's back. What the Saudi army can't do to the Houthi/Republican Guard troops, the Saudi air force can. Im just surprised the Sauds relegated their air force to doing punitive air strikes deep inside Houthi territory more so than trying to help their own troops. I guess they just don't want to accidentally bomb their own troops

>>

most likely it will be a few skirmishes, then the SAA will attack a bit, and the rebels will band together again for another 6months. Remember both sides are hodgepodges of dozens of different groups with different interests, and they maintain unity by finding a common enemy.

Turks can't catch a break.

Reports coming in that Al Sufaniyah has been re-captured by ISIL after Turkish forces took the town. Sufaniyah has been a target that the Turkish backed forces have attempted to take the town over twelve times and were only able to take the town about 12 hours ago before being ousted hours later. If the reports are true it would deal a serious blow to the Turkish attempts to advance on Al Bab.

ISIS breaching charge
>>
>>32775436
You gotta admit, ISIS has been pretty operator, especially as an offensive unit in a region where offensives are typically major failures or just unable to materialize from the actors in play

They got the best shock troops out of anyone they fight

>>
>>32775436
They are, at the very least, fearless and creative when it comes to using the resources they have at hand. I'm not really sure how competent they are, though. They've fought the ragtag remnants of the Assad regime, some shit-tier jihadis, Iraqis who turn tail and run more often than they shoot back, and Kurdish forces that range from hardcore professionals to chucklefuck militias. They haven't exactly performed well against the more professional forces fighting for Rojava, either. Then there's the Turks, whose performance in Syria has just been embarrassing. It might be that their opponents are just fucking terrible.

Bolting shit onto trucks is how the Iranians manage everything

This is their new "state of the art anti-aircraft system".

I mean it can be effective against ISIS but is basically Hellfire food otherwise.

They can buy some modern SAMs, which might pose a slight annoyance in that it's not going to be "operation live fire and shit and we actually have to work for it".

But nothing more than a glorified speed bump for the amount they'll have.

Those truck things are extremely effective against helicorpters and anti-infantry planes like the BRRRRRRRRRRRRT.
They're also very mobile, which can protect them from some fighters and bombers, if the detection infrastructure is in place.

Anyway, the USA wouldn't be able to defeat Iran in their own soil. Too many mountains and shit. They'd absolutely destroy every city and infrastructure like open airfields if they really wanted, though.

I'm up early reading some shit on the wire after days of stalled fighting, rebel Idlib fighting on most fronts. Step reporting a IS counter attack near Khanasir has resulted in IS over running several villages near Khanasir itself.

Heavy fighting reported in eastern Homs/T4 as well. Meanwhile SAA continues to inch closer to Al Bab from the south as Turkish backed FSA/Turkey still on the outskirts of Al Bab. The SAA has held the line in Deir Ezzor with the backing of 100's of Ruaf airstrikes as they continue to fight over the cemetery. JFS vs everyone else in Idlib is still simmering.

There is talk of a US "safe zone" however I am unclear exactly or who or what this will cover. Today will be interesting.
>>
No matter how incompetent they seem, SAA will always have my respect.
Those people were to be slaughtered, yet hanged in there for 4 fucking years, and will still be kicking ass.
I don't care what the kikes want me to think about them, they are the only heroes in that war.
I thought that Deir Ezzor was going to fall that night.

Now think of the financial means that Iran has as compared to the USA. And the cost of manning that thing (Iranian manpower) and the amount of industrial capacity it takes to produce one truck and one hellfire. And the proportional impact of losing a truck vs expending a missile on your ability to defend yourself. Suddenly, it's not so smart to make these things anymore.

yep done it two or three times before just as quickly. You have to remember this means they pushed their lines forward only a few km against what is effectively open desert. Also the road is generally defended by NDF who flee at the first sign of inevitable crushing defeat.

Most likely the tigers will be pulled from their north aleppo front to reopen the road, and then they'll put the NDF back in control, and in a few months ISIS will again attack and cut the road, etc. etc.

>>32780870
yeah no. It took 3 weeks to take the entirety of Iraq which had a military of almost equal ability. Iran doesn't stand a chance against the US military. Human wave tactics do not work against a doctrine of overwhelming firepower. Add to the equation the fact that the kurds would rebel against Iran to take even more clay for themselves, and you're looking at Iran quickly ceasing to exist.

Iraq is pretty much all flat plains and conveniently borders Saudi which the US could use as a staging ground. Iran is all mountains and would be able to put up a much stronger resistance. While the kurds may revolt though they have a generally much better relationship with the state than the kurds had with saddam the rest of the country is a lot more unified than Iraq was/is. Iranians have national pride and cohesion, they are all shija etc, they've got some baluchi and other ethnicities in the east but there's no reason to assume they would actively support a US invasion.
>>

last I checked the US conquered Iraq, and Afghanistan. Iran is less rugged than Afghanistan, and no more militarized than Iraq. Also Iran borders Iraq and Afghanistan. If the US wanted they could (as they already have in limited numbers) send troops to North eastern kurdistan in north Iraq, and troops to south western Afghanistan, and then they have a beautiful pincer set up. Add to this an amphibious invasion from the south and Iran literally would have to defend on three fronts against a technologically superior foe. Iran would be conquered.

Could they still have an insurgency? Yes. But at the cost of losing all of their clay, just like what happened in Iraq and Afghanistan. Hence Iran would lose far more than the US, and its regime would lose everything if Trump decides to invade.
>>

I am reading SOHR and he backs up pro SAA claims of it's fucking nothing sort of. SOHR claims IS was forced to leave the Khanasir outskirts after a few hours and the road is open now but apparently IS did take over large parts nearby briefly. For IS's part there has been no word from them since the attack started.

Meanwhile a large SAA offensive toward Al Bab is ongoing with another village taken today. Fighting continues everywhere else there has been active fighting with little else on news.

We already agreed that destroying the governments is easy for the US to do, but limiting your thinking to just throwing military weight around and not completely pacifying a country a la postwar Germany and Japan is taking the easy way out in proclaiming a win.

Might as well say the Soviets won their war by killing enough jihadists, or better yet, the US winning Vietnam by killing enough commies when both governments they left behind collapsed.

>>32784870
There are two proven methods for pacifying a populace. First is the route the US took in Germany and Japan, which is to build and empower a noncorrupt government which cares about the health of the country. Second is the mongolian route. If a town resists you surround the town, march in kill everyone and build a mountain of skull in the center of town. Rinse and repeat until no one dares to resist.

If the US tries their strategy, but retains vested interests, ie. draws the military from the current iranian military, the vast majority of the pacification work will be done via the iranian army. The problem inIraq and to a smaller degree in afghanistan is that we disbanded the miltary members, and in fact barred the military members under the old regime from joining the new regimes forces. This lead to a large number of military trained people who could not join the normal military. Hence insurgencies.

>not completely pacifying a country a la postwar Germany and Japan is taking the easy way out in proclaiming a win.

You and I seem to have different memories of post war japan and germany. There were in fact many partisan attacks on both governments that continued for decades. Further, neither one of those countries had a neighbor who could serve a base of operations from which to launch attacks in that country.

Also completely pacifying the country is radically different from >the USA wouldn't be able to defeat Iran in their own soil.
Last I checked taking all of their clay and exiling the resistance to another country counted as defeating them on their soil.

>>
>>32791084
The biggest problem with Western interventions is that there is no political will to stay in the country for as long as it takes and to invest in the country. When you compare the US occupation of Japan vs Iraq, you can see that the US wasn't as willing to implement long lasting and deep reforms that would have been necessary for the rehabilitation of Iraq. In a way, Japan is still feeling the effects of the occupation as the defense pact and the US armed forces presence in the country shows how even now Japan still has to rely on the US for some form of protection/help.

There was too much of an emphasis on military strength in the country, when what it needed was good governance and the establishment of a strong yet impartial government. Which was next to impossible since the US fired almost all the Baathists, which comprised almost all the good bureaucrats, soldiers and officers.

The problem with Western interventions is every human in Iraq is a cultural enemy of the West. Germany and Japan were only political enemies, not religious enemies.

Staying in Iraq would have been counterproductive. The wars are wonderful because enemies kill enemies. Muslims understand they are all enemies of everyone who is not Muslim, but stupid white westerners don't get it. Best for the West and Russia if Trump and Putin make friends but keep the enemy bleeding.

Syria intact would be a military threat. So would Iraq. All their borders were drawn by colonials so naturally they don't match ethnic/tribal/superstitionist groups. Outsiders should enjoy the war and hope it lasts fifty years.
>>
>>32791832
>I agree but Germany (western europe post WWII in general), South Korea and as you mentioned Japan contradict that.

Those are not Muslim therefore not cultural enemies. Don't compare superstitionist cultural enemies who will never give up to anything else.

The correct strategy for fighting superstitionist enemies is play them against each other along their preferred fault lines.

It wasn't Erdogan that fucked up the relationship but Obama. When the war started, Erdogan was offering himself up to mediate between Assad and protesters while Obama was saying that Assad had to go and applying pressure on Erdogan to fall in line. Than Obama pussied out and left Erdogan with a war on his border. When refugees started pouring over the border, Erdogan proposed a safe zone and asked for US air support but Obama said no. Than Obama started supporting the Kurds who literally executed two Turkish cops and started a fucking war on Turkey. Obamas' indecision and constant moving of goalposts and objectives without thinking how it affects US allays in the region made Erdogan go out on his own. In prelude to Iraq '03 Erdogan wanted to join Bush, but was blocked by Turkish parliament, the man was a US allay until king nigger tried stringing him along.

Obama was more than incompetent in ME, he fucked up relations with every US allay while failing to make conclusive peace with any of US enemies. Well, except the Syrian Kurds, a poor, landlocked semi communist non-state at war or soon to be at war with all its neighbors. In 2008 Syria and Iran were the only two countries in the ME that were not US allays. Today its KCK and Israel, and even that's only because US paid through to keep one alive and the other one friendly.

We definitely won the invasion phase. We removed Saddam from power and captured him shortly afterwards. The insurgency phase? We really screwed the pooch on that one. Our fostering of the Arab Spring also led to the beginning of the Syrian Civil War. We fucked up big time.

Iran lost to Iraq during the Iraq -Iran war....... America would stomp Iran within 2 days
>>
>>32800573
That war was the definition of a stalemate dude
>>
>>32800573
Iraq invaded Iran at the start and got it's ass kicked. Then Iran counter-invaded, had a long stalemate, and then was pushed out. It was more a draw than anything else. But considering the war began as an attempt by Iraq to take over a piece of Iran, which they failed to do, I'd give the edge to Iran.

Exactly. But i honestly expect them to give stuff like T-90 tanks only to their most competent tank units.

Nobody could confirm the smoked T-90 was given to Hezbollah. It could have been another Shia militia, or even just some SAA unit hoistering that flag. They're all fucking Green and Yellow there, may as well claim it was YPG lel

True.

In fact i think it was an SAA tank. I doubt russia actually delivers (T-90) tanks to either the Hezbollah or other Militias. (or is there some proof of that i'm not aware of?)
And i also doubt the SAA would give them one of their new T-90s either. They have more than enough old tanks they want/need to replace first.

Sg is fine. I can't keep this thread up by myself but i'll try. I am more focused on the military aspects of this conflict. It might seem like I pick on the SAA by focusing on IS but they are one's with the most interesting tactics to me. IS has declared war on everyone so there is always something going on with them.

The only major news today was the SAA retaking Wadi Barada/ Damascus water supply and the Jihadists merge in Idlib called Tahrir al-Sham.
There is minor IS vs SAA fighting but nothing of note. I hate to go into politics but all these pro rebel sources are making me sick over their false outrage over Trump today. Never heard much anger over their people's allegiances to Al Qaeda. Between the "rebels" and the Assad government(who didn't care about these terrorists until they started shooting at them) they deserve each other, hopefully banned from entering the US for years to come.

I'm still on Deir Ezzor watch since the false reports of fighting yesterday. It's a really weird blackout in Deir right now. I think everyone wants to see what happens next. It's been a long battle.

Ruptly doesn't have any footage of the Palmyra amphitheater being reopened for executions however...
http://aranews.net/2017/01/islamic-state-executes-two-syrian-soldiers-palmyra/

>The group on Saturday executed two of the imprisoned soldiers,” local media activist Armo al-Hussein told ARA News.

>The soldiers were executed by firing squad at the Roman amphitheatre in the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra. Dozens of people have reportedly witnessed the execution on Saturday.

I guess they could rev up the old classical music concert footage but that would bring up some bad memories.

>>
>>32812557
I doubt it, ditching Turkey altogether would be a massive decision, and the Kurds can never come remotely close to being a replacement ally, because they cannot give the US the Bosphorus. That little strip of water is the most important strategic asset Turkey has and the reason they can get away with so much shit without being dumped many times over already.

The Kurds have always been a bit-part player in the region and always will be. What makes them so useful as such to the US is also what makes them useless as potentially anything more: They have little expansionist desire and are only really interested in fighting for what they view as their traditional homelands. Look at how slowly they're advancing on Raqqa and now making little effort to start pushing into more built up areas, it's not Kurdish clay and they're only there due to US pushing so they have no desire to get into the potentially hard/costly fights against IS in the urban areas IS prefers to fight in. Away from 'their' territory they have little use as an ally because they aren't willing to jog on and die for other peoples ideals.
Whilst I'm sure the Kurds would happily give the US a proper airbase in the region in return for ongoing support against whoever, gaining a (landlocked and utterly isolated) luxury airbase and nothing more, other than a new ally in a state of perpetual war in return for losing the Bosphorus in a potential SHTF scenario would be a monumentally bad trade for the US strategically.
