Don't get me wrong, I love the MP5, such a great smg, but what made it 'perfect'? Was it german SMG class AK? Very durable, rugged, reliable and easy to operate and maintain and even relatively cheap?

It was the best compared to the other SMGs of the era. And still holds it's own against modern SMGs and PCCs.

And that HK slap. I plan on getting a PTR91 soon so I can do big boy HK slap. And eventually get a MP5 clone as well. I've only shot a rental full retard one at the range.

Not him and I don't think that MP5 was perfect but it has some advantages over straight blowback SMGs because it uses roller delayed blowback.

It's purpose was to fully replace the MP5. It failed at that, so it's a failure in that regard. As a weapon, it is a success.

UMP is I believe straight blowback which isn't bad by itself, but at the same time - HK was making MP5 already and it was delayed blowback which helped with accuracy a lot. So UMP was kinda redundant.

Back in the day it was easily the most accurate SMG, it was compact and could be suppressed very effectively, also installing optic or night vision was easy thanks to claw mount. Those made it perfect for police and special forces. It was never a cheap gun for SMG.

As an MP5 lover and owner I wouldn't say it was a failure, just a great product at the wrong time. It improves A LOT on the MP5 design and makes a sub gun that is cheaper, lighter and easier to maintain (hello you sexy swappable barrel you). Downside is that German/US laws fucked them from ever getting big in the private market where people want them, and by the time the UMP had landed most departments either already had MP5s (or their own favorite SMGs) or were going to shorty AR
