You can actually do a real cheappy armor if shit hits the fan by duct taping two phone books together. Then duct taping ceramic tile to that. Then you have to create harness around your shoulders using duct tape. Crude but if shit really hits the fan it may help.

I picked up a used Eagle Industries CIRAS vest on eBay for like 140 bucks. It's usually impossible to get them for less than 500, but they were the standard issue vest for the Marines for the last decade and they are still be used by Navy Special Forces and expeditionary forces. It's a good modular vest for most climates it's not exactly ideal for hot climates because it has a lot of coverage on your side's which adds additional warmth even without plates. Except standard sapi plates with plenty of room for trauma pads and anti fragmentation. It also can be layered up to include level 3A soft armor shoulder pads throat protector neck protector deltoid protectors and groin flap. My ultimate warning with this vest is make sure you get the real deal. Any of the copies that are sold on Alibaba or AliExpress are Chinese knock-offs that are two sizes smaller than American standard size. Even Phantom gears Airsoft version isn't quite correct. I owned one of those before I found my Eagle vest and noted that the Cordura sleeves inside of the vests that are supposed to hold the plates are not correct. The front sleeve will hold an 8 by 10 curved sapi plate fine but the back one is designed to hold a smaller plate and typically when you buy plates you buy two of the same size. I have owned other vest before including the Condor generic whatever vest that they sell on Amazon for like $63. That thing was trash and no matter how I wore it it absolutely rub to the crap out of my shoulders and sides. I highly recommend going milsurp and waiting it out to find the quality product being sold for Dirt Cheap on eBay.

Oh and I forgot to mention that I've deployed in this vest three times. If you wear it right with the cumberbuns Tight as f*** around your waist it keeps the weight off of your shoulders even when you have an 80 plus pound of loadout

Anytime I travel I bring a concealed soft armor vest in my suitcase. It's not traveling every day with armor in the car per se, but when I'm going to extremely liberal areas like the city of San Diego for instance where there have been riots and people blocking the roads I think that it's just Parton and to have some form of protection with me even if it's not a weapon
