How powerful would a AC-5 Gunship be?what kind of armaments would it have?
>>
>>32728905
I'm hard
>>
>>32728905
It would be armed with four THEL turrets.

Three on the bottom, one on the top of the tail.

The three Tactical High Energy Lasers on the bottom would be retractable for landing / cruise.

The top tail mounted one is to shoot at enemy fighters / incomming AAMs.
It shall be called:

AC-5MTHEL

>Fat Reaper
>>
>>32729209
why?
>>
>>32729209
why should it have to be lasers?lasers produce vast ammounts of heat and would need a lot of electricity to run...speaking of electricity a AC-5 could be fitted with railgun type weapon instead
>>
>>32729497
>produce vast amounts of heat

ever heard of radiators?
lots of cool air rushing by..

>would need a lot of electricity to run

They fitted this thing (THEL) to a C-130J, and burnt 2" holes through Toyota engine blocks... power issues aren't a problem on a C-5M.

>>32729463

Why not?
>>
>>32729497
jet turbines produce ass tons of heat & electricity too
>>
>>32728905
Armed with a cannon so large it shoots smaller cannons
>>
>>32729209
https://youtu.be/cCBwLJjzDJQ?t=1m40s

this would be rad
>>
>>32728905

it would be armed with the power of being nowhere near where you'd want it with a massive maintenance footprint and the ability to break down in nice places with five star hotels nearby.
>>
>>32729745
>>32729497
Theoretically, you can use the jet engine to help cool the lasers. Basically, put a radiator after the compression blades but before the igniters.

In practice you need to build the engine around cooling.

The turbines will produce a surplus of power but it's going to take some time to charge a laser capable of melting through a car engine. I mean, our current THELs are the size of trailers and can just about burn through the thin sides of a missile.

The real limitation becomes bulk as the cooling system, the capacitors, the lasing tube, and the mirrors and lenses are all big heavy objects and space on a C-5 isn't unlimited. You'd have to scale things down to fit everything inside.

Don't get me wrong, you'd have a hell of an AA platform but you aren't going to be doing much ground attacking. Too much dust, smoke, and bad weather even before your enemy figures out what you're using.
>>
>>32729209

> build the lasers in the visible spectrum
> have a giant stereo system built into the plane's belly
> play Dark Side Of the Moon and display laser in ages on clouds at night over ISIS territory
> after all the durkhas have come out for their free light show and concert, turn the lasers on them and burn them alive
> finish by playing Serbia Strong and projecting That Face Guy
>>
>>32731005
You don't need to make the laser work in the visible spectrum, you can go higher energy and still see the beam since you can see it fucking up dust particles in the beams path
>>
guys

what if we developed a laser

that worked in the autism spectrum
>>
>>32729209
>fat
>not THICCReaper
>>
>>32728905
i want it to have turnable turbines, so it can counterforce the devastating recoil of all the firing weapons. also multiple GAU-8 sticking out of its side, with basically front parts of A-10s as turrets and the cockpits as were the gunners aim from.

C-5 is a piece of shit that would be lucky to get off the ground in time to support anyone

also if you think an AC-130 is a big target, this is what they look like side by side

t. a C-5 mechanic
>>
>>32728905
42 cm automatic rail gun firing salted nuclear shells in the middle east.
>>
>>32732917
It would be bad for responding to attacks or whatever, but if you knew you would be invading a city at a given time, you could arrange to have the plane in the air to support.
>>
>>32730944
Bleed air off the engines
>>
>>32728905
Extremely powerful
30mm multiple 105 probably lasers and miles
But unplayable
Ac130 already is sufficient
Gunner on the acu ask away
>>
>>32733038

... that's not the mission set for an AC-130. and it would definitely not be the mission set for an AC-5

an AC-5 is a terrible idea that is only supported by those who know nothing about the military.

>>32733120

Fancy, I like the pizza place on the boardwalk
>>
>>32728905
I just want to see a C-5 loaded with MOABs do a bombing run.

Anyways just staple on a bunch of howitzers with smart munitions and maybe a GAU-8 or two. Then for shits and giggles strap a CIWS system on the ass.
>>
>>32732917
nope.
>>
>>32732917
you do realize an AC-5 could have engine modifications right?a General Electric GE90 can produce up to 115 000lbf compared to the TF39 with 43 000lbf
>>
>>32728905
Don't know shit about this plane, but I guess you actually could just cram some howitzers, shells and fuel in there and have it blast things 50km away all day long?

Not actually better than ground-based artillery, sure.

Anyone feel free to tell my why that wouldn't work.

Why even
So many questions
>>
>>32735840
wouldn't make a difference. besides if they did modify any C5s theyd use the M models which already have CF-6's
>>
>>32736655
so thrust doesn't affect performance?lol
>>
>>32736735
The 'performance' he's talking about is its maintenance hour to flight hour ratio and the ease/cost of said maintenance. As I recall one of the planes nicknames is that it's a fucking disaster or something.

Honestly that's more important than speed and power for a plane like the C5.
>>
>>32736136
747 CMCA.

Dozens of AGM-86 ALCMs, conventional or nuclear.
>>
>>32736103
You realize the loading bay is in the front of the aircraft, right?
>>
>>32729745
Not as much as beefed up generators. All the 'special' C-130 models have massive non-standard generators to power all the fancy stuff.
>>
>>32738117
irrelevant to my OP.
>>
>>32738117
its nickname is Fucking Ridiculous Economic Disaster(F.R.E.D) and that problem can easily be solved with automation.
>>
>>32738222
It has a rear ramp aswell, not supporting his idea, just putting it out there.
>>
>>32732917
They really are ridiculous, I remember seeing hangers with the tail sticking through the door so the plane would fit.

I remember the first time I saw a C-5 upclose. I think I was 14.

I was absolutely amazed that such a huge metal beast could get off the ground.

Pretty crazy how we went from canvas-lined wooden frames and 20-hp propellers to crazy shit like this and putting men on the Moon in six decades.

AC400M would be superior

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DodKUmJEnbY
>>
>>32741102
Basically. I mean, I wouldn't want to go up against one with a modern stealth fighter but it's more of a flying warship than a dogfighter.

Lasers of that output should be able to swat most missiles out of the air either by slagging the warhead or burning off the control surfaces. That means the only option is to get within gun range but at that point you're within optical spotting distance. Even an A-10 isn't going to stand up to that kind of firepower, the pilot would just get cooked inside the cockpit.
