Why don't more rifles have the wood go all the way to the end of the barrel? Is it just cost saving? Or an artifact of military rifles?

Weight, and wood deforms with heat so less wood attached to the barrel is considered better by some. This is why many "sporterized" milsurp rifles have a bunch of wood removed from them.
