Pretty important, all riot control agents and most war gases will affect the skin in some way, ranging from irritating to fatal.
Riot control agents CS/CN/BZ/OC/DM can be mitigated with regular long sleeves, long pants, hood, and doffing those clothes immediately after exposure.
I can say beyond the shadow of a doubt that a waterproofed / rubberized outer garment, used in conjunction with rubber gloves and overboots (plastic bags? rubberized canvas bags?) will protect you long enough to escape a more serious threat. For increased protection seal all seams, zippers, and cuffs with household duct tape to fully encapsulate you / similar to an OSHA level "B" suit. Dispose of any exposed garment after escaping the hazard, as it may continue to off-gas. You can effectively decontaminate your waterproof raincoat of CBRN agents & riot control agents with a 5% bleach solution, so bottled household bleach.
Your mask is your lifeline here.

Avon M50 can safely change filters in a chemical environment. Self-sealing discs mean you can operate the mask with 1 filter, and as we all know 2 is 1 and 1 is none. Make sure u have CREAM colored self sealing discs and not CLEAR ones, the clear ones are on recall for, well, not self sealing. Also much easier to see out of than a M40. Prescription inserts still suck a fat dick though.

tbqh senpai i preferred the C50 with one flat cheek and one 40mm fitting cheek to take a C2A1 canister. Much better cheek weld.
>>
>10 years cbrn
what branch, and how was your time? i'm a god damn retard and want to join the army, and i'm finishing up my chem degree, so i looked at cbrn. obviously figured out there's like 0 overlap and cbrn hasn't been a thing since the gulf war so now i'm considering an armor mos but i'd love to hear about your experiences
>>
>>32727011
Your mask is your lifeline senpai, from a cost-effect standpoint I recommend 1. MSA M40, 2. MSA Millennium or MCU 2/P, 3. Avon C50/M50 (best, but most expensive). Anything that can accept a 40MM canister will work well and save you. Buy at least 2 filters and keep them sealed. I recommend surplus C2A1, Scott CAP-1, STI M96 as good all hazards filters. Dispose of filters after potential exposure. Decontaminate mask with 1 part household bleach, 9 parts water after use.

MOPP/JSLIST suit is gold standard for operating when chemical agents may be involved. Leave sealed in airtight bag. Once exposed to air you have 30 days before it becomes just another camoflauge suit. If occupying static position / home defense in riot type of scenario, you can get by with a tyvek suit, duct tape around cuffs, duct tape to close front seam. Absolutely sucks and is sweaty, but cheap and will buy you enough time to remove yourself from a chemical threat.
>>
>>32727189
Army, did work for DHS after the fact and currently do contract work for the Army Chemical Activity. Unless you're in the CBRN Schoolhouse or the Medical Research and Material Command (Me) they will stick you in some orderly room and make you do paperwork, and your skills will go to waste. With an advanced chem background like yourself CBRN would be a complete waste of your time and, honestly, an indignity.

Maybe you can help me out on this one, because all I can find is druglords offering me their rather shady deals...

What substance can I use that, when applied as a coat of dust over objects (say, inside a shed on tools or stuff, or maybe as a little cup that drops down through a mechanism) and then either inhaled (or better yet, have it be absorbed through the skin if at all possible, removing the need for a container/trap device in the first place), will produce severe, permanent damage or worse/better to anyone in contact with it? Preferably within a few days is best, less suspicious and all, you know?

I ask this because gas is kind of a pain to store, transport, keep track of, etc. And an oily medium through which the substance could be absorbed by the skin will likely be cleaned off by the fuckers who dare enter muh shed (and it's rather suspicious, whereas dust is just fucken dust, it's everywhere)

Also, stability over time is greatly appreciated, since we get to visit only every four to eight months, and we can't replace it before that time...
>>
>>32727291
As a Chemical DEFENSE officer I can't in good conscience touch that with a 10 foot pole, but I can advise you check out a substance used in bacterial staining called "Crystal Violet", this will stain skin a dark purple and assist you in catching the people who fuck with your shed
>>
>>32727087
Do you use bleach to clean the mask as well?
>>
>>32727876
The mask can be safely cleaned with 1 part bleach, 9 parts water.
>>
>>32726345

what system do you think would be able to take more punishment in the field, PAPR or SCBR?
>>
>>32727921

oops, SCBA, misstype
>>
>>32727390
Ah, y'all are always such killjoys. Time and time again forcing us into copying the local tribes and using indigenous Curare and shit, so we run the risk of getting in trouble with their relatives, or we'll have to bait the fuckers (and hopefully only them) with some spiked whiskey...or we're gonna have to go for broke and use some gas or that (honestly very tempting) methyl sulfate stuff, ugh

Well, that, or some leftovers that our nice friends the mining industries always seem to forget to take home

Anywho, thanks for the input though, I truly appreciate it. I'll see into it, hopefully we'll find the culprit(s)

>MFW they get a full-body spray of shit that turns them purple
That ought to be a fun one to explain, at least
>>
>>32727892
Why is the concentration different from the 5% you quoted earlier?
>>
>>32727921
PAPR undoubtedly, SCBA will be heavier and limit your time exposed to 30-60 minutes, depending upon bottle size. Also a PAPR is lower profile and can be mounted basically anywhere on your person. Its only limits are filter type and battery size

>>32727958
Sorry, should have clarified! Per the Institute of Chemical Defense a 5% bleach solution should be used to decontaminate vehicles, equipment and outerwear, while a .5% solution (Roughly 1 part bleach, 9 parts water) should be used to decontaminate anything that may come in contact with skin and can be used to decontaminate skin if nothing else is available.
>>
>>32727987
While I'm sure best practice is to have one for training and one for use, is there any real risk in using the same mask for both?

Also can you just keep using one set of filters for training indefinitely?

>>32728291
As long as you decontaminate the mask, either with 0.5% bleach solution or with copious amounts of water, you can use indefinitely!

Filters should be replaced after exposure to chemical agents. If you anticipate coming into contact with a chemical agent, you should use a new (fresh out of package) filter. Now that new filters are made from safer materials, you can use a post-2000 filter like a C2A1 for training indefinitely.

>>32728315
You're right as usual /k/ommando, they should just encourage us to handle the suspicious package with our porous nomex gloves

I always wondered what actual chemical units did all day.

There was a chemical battalion down the road from one of the units I was in at Fort Lewis. I never actually saw them doing anything, meanwhile, I was out doing training all the fucking time. Considered CBRN is treated more or less like a useless relic these days, I always wondered if they actually trained on anything, or just did details all the time.

Radiological refers to like a dirty bomb, while nuclear would refer to a nuclear weapon

Is it radioactive isotopes releasing radiation at a low rate vs. the radiation shock of a weapon?

Much simpler, if it goes boom and involves fissile material, it falls under Nuclear. if it doesn't go boom but releases radiation, it falls under Radiological. Two totally different events linked only by radioactive material

>>32728664

what if i only give enough of a fuck for it to be turned back in after the ORE and get my hand receipt so i don't have to pay for it when logistics magically loses it?

also should i pop my glasses inserts into it now?
>>
>>32726345
OK, I've read your go-fast kit, what COTS gear would work well enough for a small family in a low-threat, rural environment, given that its most realistically going to live in the closet and be used once or twice, max?
I'm thinking protection from whatever hoodlums could steal from small-town cops (CS?CN?) and the usual Ammonia-Bleach type expedients.

>we won't get into that
No, really I want to know. They've got their little area next to our shop and they're always out there doing something that looks like training.

But then someone forgets they suck, we do a training range with them, I walk out of the "confirmed bio lab" and head to the CCA, and then some E-6 waves a JCAD at me and tells me I'm clean.

All of our guys only get ~8 weeks of Chem/Bio and RND training in AIT, but my E-4's had to walk chem NCO's through how to set up a hot line. Do you guys just not have any leadership?

I don't mean to seem like I'm shitting on you personally, but the radical amounts of suck I've seen come out of the chem corps is just incredible.

>>32728501
I wouldn't look forward to it. The base itself is in the middle of no where and US cbrn doesn't know how to do their job.
