what's the purpose of leg gaiters?

Btw anybody have a source for some "tactical" leg gaiters? I found some British surplus ones in multicam a while back but can't find them again.

Keeping your boots and socks clean and dry. In Minnesota they use them to keep snow out of their boots.

Just get them in either black or a dull neutral color you homo.
>>32725187
not the anon you were talking to but none of those look as aesthetic as the one in OP's pic
>>32724967
To keep your feet dry. These guys are obviously deployed in some kind of marshland or jungle where trench foot is enough of a consideration to issue gaiters.
>>32724967
They look super cool.
That's all Battlefield's gear is based around.
>>32724967
I wear some while I turkey hunt as extra tick protection.
This looks similar to the OP pic, and it has multicam, but they don't have zipper. http://www.ottegear.com/catalog-detail.php?p=45
>>32724967
gaiters are great in rocky terrain and for walking in wet vegetation, like a grass field in the morning.
They can be used in mud to prevent getting mud on your shoes. They are usually used when wearing strap crampons for ice climbing.

How the fuck do you make leg gaiters tactical? You want a pair with molle on it or something? Go down to your local milsurp store, buy a set of them in od or tan, and buy some bleach and fabric dye in the color of your choice.
>>32725686
>You want a pair with molle on it or something
hey this is actually a good idea, i mean you could put a knife holster there or something
>>32725174
Dunno bout a source, but tasmanian tiger makes some good cordura gaiters in several colours (and multicam for that extra tacticality).
The swiss ones you see on varusteleka are a bit warmer (not like it really matters) and not bad either if you find grey tactical.

Or you could use the strap that came with the knife sheath, or more likely a random pack strap that is laying around. Or just put your knife on your belt/chest like a normal person. Unless, you are parachuting and expect to end up in a tree, all tangled and fucked around upside down. There is no reason to have a knife on your boot. If you do get tangled in a tree, your knife will be bound to your leg with bullshit anyway. Murphy never sleeps.

Then there's the venting, the prevention of taking water in through your laceups as you walk through tall grass, and the ability to make your issued suede boots blend in a little better with JRTC.

Only true answer: They keep twigs and rocks and shit out of your skateboard shoes because you were too stupid to buy boots even though you understand the need.
Gaiters are for trail runners and shit and other shoes that don't have a high ankle. Gaiters solve a problem that people themselves create as an excuse to spend more money to feel more uncomfortable while they don't actually ever do anything outside.

Running through a good thicket of Gorse will absolutely leave cotton BDUs in shreds. Gaiters also have their uses for not stabbing yourself when wearing crampons.
>>32724967
you ever camp in snow or have to cross scree fields or even bushwhack through dense foliage, or even have very pissed off rattlesnake sitting dead center under your truck, no no you have not. Gaiters solve all of these problems and more. Hike with rocks and dirt in your boots no more and keep your lower legs clean in the mud. Gaiters are good.

breaking in your boots is a dumb meme that needs to die
>>32729552
"Break in" is real, but it's not going to magically resize your boots which is what most people think it does.
"Broken in" boots usually only means that they've got a bit more flex around the ankle and in the sole, unless you bought a decent pair of boots, in which case you'll walk the fucking sole off before they lose their stiffness; OR, if you bought a cheapass pair, in which case they will actually get harder and stiffer and worse to wear over time.

For those who don't know this jumps name is spartan117gw. AKA Greg Wong, he's in the Army Reserves or something and on his YouTube channel he mixes up his videos with airsoft some bullshit about games and actually firing real guns. A lot of the Tactical shit he does is mostly just for promotion he's got a partnership with Magpul Airsoft division and is one of their salesmen.
When I did a long range patrolling ex in the beginning of winter the more experienced guys had decent mountain boots on, gaiters and they wore regular combat pants instead of goretex because we were rucking 40km+ in -5C weather. It makes sense in some scenarios. Also if you wear short boots you won't get chafing around your legs which I tend to get. Like literally scratching my skin off.
So basically if you want to wear non waterproof breathable pants, and short boots because you're going to be walking forever then gaiters make sense.

Look at that. Yes, blousing high boots with robust water resistant trousers will give you a similar effect, but both of these have their own problems.
