First off, good luck finding a semi-auto FAMAS.

Bullpups are okay. They might be a better choice than a normal rifle for HD but I personally believe shotguns and handguns are superior for HD.

I'd suggest an AUG. They've been around a while, they are available and there is a good aftermarket. As good as bullpups get anyway.

It did exist. The civilians versions were named MAS .223 and MAS .222 for the French market. Less than a hundred MAS ..23 were imported into the US by Century arms, now they are typically sold for $10k at auctions.
In France the .223 is worth about 5k€ and the .222 1,5k€.
Since magazines and spart parts are absolutely impossible to find, they are only collector items, not meant to be ever fired.

Less than 200 MAS 223, the semi auto F1 lacking some stuff the military F1 got like the rifle grenade sights and the selector under the stock, which is a good way to identify them, were built.

Less than 150 were imported and sold by Century Arms in the US. Some re-imported. I don't know the exact figures.

Less than 100 MAS 222 were built. I don't know if any of them were re-imported. They were firing the .222 remington cartridge for the french civillian market which did not allow back then a semi automatic weapon in use with the french army to be sold to civillians using the same caliber.

I know for sure the exact number of semi auto Famas G2 owned by civillians. There are exactly nine.

Lowest price in the US ten years ago for a Famas F1 was around 8000 $. I have no idea for how much a civilian G2 would sold.

Also, while around 120.000 F1 did survive to this day in the french army from the 350.000 F1 built, most of the remnant guns will be scrapped to avoid further dissemination of them as the HK416 enters service in the french army.

The 20.000 Famas G2 featuring an AR15 compatible magwell and their aug-like trigger guard which were bought by the french navy will be kept active.

Very few Famas F1 or G2 were exported. Here are the places where you can find a military Famas if you're interested in easter egg hunting for super expensive guns and doing mountains of paperwork to re-import them in the US.
