CATIA, Solidworks, Inventor are probably the biggest ones. Inventor is really popular with smaller companies because it's cheap. I like NX, personally.

I was ripping models from World Of Guns: Gun Disassembly. I used Ninja Ripper. I had to assembly the jumbled pieces together back together in 3DS Max.
The model isn't very high poly and I want to make a reworked version in SolidWorks. I'm very novice with CAD software and so far, I only made a gas piston that probably has incorrect dimensions. The original model looks pretty poor to use for CAD. I'd need real schematics or measurements to clarify and get a more accurate model.
>>
>>32701486
Glad to hear this, seems like there isn't much difference to Germany then.

I learned Inventor in training and I'm learning CATIA at college right now, although they want to switch to NX. Overall I prefer Inventor for now, especially the interface.

How does NX compare to CATIA and Inventor?

With my basic skills, I made the gas piston from the measurements that came from the model. I had to eyeball the curves.
Mostly just extruding and chamfers... I don't know how to do more complex shapes (i.e the bolt/bolt carrier geometry)
>>
>>32701627
The modeling itself is largely the same but the built in simulation in NX is very far superior to, say, Inventor. It's also multi platform, though the Mac OS and Linux versions are gimped.

A smarter way to do a cylindrical object like that is to draw the profile and revolve about a centerline or axis. This cuts your 10 separate extrude operations down to a single operation, resulting in a less complicated model. Looks good regardless.

Sounds good.
How about technical drawings, is it more like Inventor or CATIA?

It bugs me that I have to manually put and adjust my text in the title block in CATIA, while Inventor has an extra window for this where I can quickly write everything down.

The best way would be searching for associate degrees offered by your local community college. Otherwise, there are hundreds of tutorials on YouTube but advanced modeling may be trickier to learn on your own and it's going to take hours of practice.
>>
>>32701998
I guess it's reminiscent of Inventor, but there's a lot more you can do with the drafts. I'm really not familiar with CATIA, so I can't tell you if it's similar to that.
>>
>>32701848
>>32701828
You can do that? Damn. I need to git gud.

I ((downloaded)) SolidWorks as I was interested in the assembly features. I was not satisfied with Sketchup so I decided to get it. It's certainly a much more complicated program than the former, though I would like to get better at using it.

If I were you, I would go through each of the buttons on the "features" tab and become familiar with their function. Maybe YouTube the ones that aren't so clear. Become familiar with constraints in assembly mode as well. If you do this, you'll be in a much better position to model and assemble most simple machine parts.

Thanks for the tutorials. Lynda dot com is pretty helpful. My IT teacher got us to follow their videos to do web design and coding crap.

Also, the textures failed to port to the .3ds format for some reason. I'll include the .max files in all the previous version formats if you want to fix the textures up or something. I just reassembled all the geometry, I don't want to mess around with textures.

CNC/manual machinist here, I've taken a bit of MasterCAM, and I've made a few parts using the CAD functions, but they're often a little finicky.

CAD = computer aided design = drawing a part/making a model in 3D on the computer. Most parts made today are made on the computer using a plethora of CAD software.
CAM = computer aided manufacturing = is required to make CNC code that makes CNC machines do what for the go look more like part when.

thread has a couple options for CAD software, read above
>>
>>32711512
Yes. Yes.

Most machine shops wont run your g and m code because some parameters are machine/controller specific. They will take your model however and translate it to cnc speak for you.

For 1 off parts expect to pay a mint.

Here's what it looks like in MasterCAM, btw.

Yes, I know the threadform isn't exact. I didn't really do root and crest dimensions.

The good thing is that exact modeling of threads isn't really needed, even when threadmilling. Taps don't care, obviously, you just need the right size hole, right feed per revolution (right codes for tapping, especially with rigid tapping), and so on. Modeling the thread is kinda bling, it'll usually be annotated in most manufacturing drawings and not actually drawn/modeled in as it can actually make some drawings and stuff less clear (too many lines everywhere).

Now, MasterCAM isn't a modeling software, that's why it took like five minutes to do this simple thing. I've heard that Solidworks and dedicated CAD software have actual functions for thread stuff, but I sadly have little experience in there.
>>
>>32712021
This. Expect very annoyed machine shop personnel if your CAD drawing isn't dimensioned properly (what tolerances, surface finish requirements, dimensions of features, etc).
