Can we get a thread about this magnificent war, or perhaps late 1800's early 1900s wars, a time of great empires, grand armies, and mighty war mustaches in general? Also the movie is good stuff.

China never gets old.

Why was it actually called the boxer rebellion? I heard way back when I was in high school that it was because the Chinese beat the shit of westerners wirh kung fu and the westerners didn't know it was kung fu so they called it boxing. This sounds far fetched to me though.

Almost no one knows about this war.

Its not taught in American secondary school, so it's not something we're likely to opine on.

I always remember reading about that in school and wondering what the troops were thinking when people started to die

how seriously did they take that shit?
>>
>>32688993
well, they couldve charged in and easily overwhelmed the legation troops but didnt, so probably not well
>>
>>32686138
Honestly this reminds me of my grandmother shitting on modern fashion one day. God bless her soul.
Before she passed she remembered seeing something on tv about those parachute sweatpants. Not the average ones, the really swanky fashion ones that are just overly sized and look ridiculous. She said that's what 80 year old village ladies in the mountains of Albania wore while working grain fields and milking cows and goats. She was dumbfounded that people were paying hundreds of dollars for what an entire region of the world considered peasant cloths.

ah, my bad.

i though "jingal" mentioned before was like the unit name or something, not the name of one of the possibly multiple type of guns in the picture.

>"“Jingal” was the name the British gave to both Indian and Chinese rampart guns used from the 1700s up until World War II. The guns were originally muzzle loaders, used in fixed defensive emplacements. They had exceptionally long barrels (60″ or more), and were used to fire off rampart walls as a sort of precision artillery. The very long sight radius gave them better practical accuracy than smaller shoulder rifles, and the large calibers used were effective at long range. "

>"This particular gun is one of the more common types to be found today, a single-shot bolt action in .60 caliber (others were also made in .75 caliber). The gun has a rear sight adjustable for elevation and a dovetail for the missing front sight. The mechanism is a simple interrupted thread at the back of the bolt. The extractor, firing pin, and trigger mechanism are all typical of Mauser type rifles. This rifle most likely dates from the late 1880s or 1890s."

neat, i want one.

How do you use radar to get BVR hits, if you go into stealth mode by turning off radar ?

- Genuine question, not sure how these things work.

>magnificent war
Just as the highway of death can't be rightfully called a 'battle', neither was this much of a 'war'. More accurately, it was a curbstomp. Then again, it's a Chinese military tradition to lose badly (though the Boxers were technically civilian they had the covert support of the Qing royalty).

If I recall, the real killer for the westerners was disease and heatstroke on account of all the nations essentially competing to get to the capital before the others.
>>
>>32689670

>covert

The Qing literally declared war on "all foreign powers"

It just so happens that Chinese military was split up regionally and most of the regions knew that going to war with 8 colonial powers was complete suicide.
>>
Always some new, I never realized how multi national the boxer rebellion was, italians, indians, frenchs, japanese...

Kek
>>
>>32689708
>>32689735

Now for the actual explanation.

This wasn't a war between two countries, this was Chinese people wanting to kill all of the Christians and foreigners.

Imagine if say... Turkey decided to kill all of the foreigners there tomorrow, every nation with citizens or embassies there would attempt to send aid to assist the defence of foriegners, and the most able of the countries (America/NATO/Russia) would launch direct invasions.

the only relevant part of chinese history is the opium wars, nationalist china/WWII involvement, and them becoming commies.

classical chinese history can be summed up as "backwards ineffectual nation succumbs to internal corruption and external invasion" on repeat.

Ask people in South Africa. Their witch doctors do something similar over there. Although to be honest thats the least crazy thing they do over there if you can believe it.
