Okay /k/ I hope you guys can help me out. I'm fairly new to ar15's and have never cleaned one. I own an Armalite m15 just for reference.
>So here I am.
>I take out both pins and separate the upper from the lower.
>I take the upper receiver and slide the charging handle out along with the bolt carrier...
>all of my wat when instead of coming out in two pieces like all the videos I've been watching in preparation for this, it comes out attached as one piece with a fairly long tube at the top of the bolt carrier.
>this tube is attached in such a way that the charging handle can't be completely taken off the bolt carrier.
>the tube has "two" parts I guess. The tip of it can rotate around and the longer part that attaches itself to the bolt carrier.
>Was no ready to move past this so ended up putting it all back together until I know what I'm dealing with.

I didn't take a picture of the tube because I just wanted to put it back together before doing anything else. Can anyone tell me what the hell it is and why it doesn't look like the other disassembly videos I've looked at?

>I attached a regular photo of the ar15 so maybe that'll help.
>>
>>32675386
>Armalite m15
Looks like a bog standard bolt carrier group to *me.*

What do you mean when you say the BCG is supposed to come out 'in two pieces'?
>>
>>32675386
Sounds like the op rod for a piston system. Pics would help.
>>
>>32675423
>Sounds like the op rod for a piston system

He said tube. I was thinking weirdo piston as well, but...tube. What if his gas tube's come loose from his gas block?
>>
>>32675444
That would be my other guess since he said he can't remove it far enough to get the charging handle out.

If that's the case, I would take it back immediately and tell them it's missing the gas block pin.
>>
>>32675420
Well in most of the videos I watched they would slide the BCG out and the main carrier comes out and then they take out the charging handle, and that's it. They come out separately is what I meant. In this case the main bolt could not come out without the charging handle coming out at the same time...along with that long pipe.
>>32675423
I might take it apart again and take a photo just to get a clear ID.
>>
take a pic OP.

Yeah, that sounds like a loose gas tube. Pics and we can confirm.

Pic related is my AR (bored and wanted to post pic for no reason).
>>
>>32675464
Them fucking rollpins, mane.

>>32675481
Take a pic. We got several guesses on the table, I wanna see who guessed right.
>>
>>32675488
Okay I'll take one asap because I want best confirmation I can. I just hope I don't look stupid once I get the answer.

Maybe it's an LR-300.
>>
>>32675512
What's that rear sight?
>>
>>32675525
Could be a PWS long stroke upper as well
>>
>>32675386
Are you sure the BCG wasn't just caught up in the charging handle? They are normally not connected but they do move as one piece until you get them pretty much all the way out... I'm not doubting you, just the simplest explanation I can think of is simple operator error.
>>
>>32675386

wait do you have a piston or dgi rifle?

YHM rear sight, one of the older ones. Not sure if they make it anymore. It really helps with a co-witness.

>>32675488
Okay here is a picture. I just took it out and made sure to show how the charging handle can't be taken off because of the pipe being there.
>>32675562
Also I have no idea because I won this rifle in a raffle.
>>
>>32675609
Yep, that's a piston. lol
>>
>>32675609

piston ar my dude
>>
>>32675619
So now what?
>>
>>32675609
Fucking piston system. Called it.

It's fine OP, just research on how to maintain one.
>>
>>32675628
>It's fine OP
it is not fine.
piston ars are not fine
>>
>>32675609
>I won this rifle in a raffle

Noice.

>>32675622
>So now what?

Find out who made that piston kit, for starters. That'll be where to go for your maintenance instructions.
>>
>>32675632
At least it isn't a Turkish or Brazilian gun. Could be worse.
>>
>>32675628
>>32675609
whats funny is its a long stroke piston. certainly something you dont see everyday, i didnt know armalite made such a thing until i googled it
>>
>>32675609
Put a wrench on the flats and unscrew the piston to disassemble
>>
>>32675609
Great news OP you have an AR lower with a kickass rollmark.

My recommendation is to put together a sick 14.5 or 16" gucci upper to match it
>>
>>32675609
Eww, its a longstroke!
Throw it in the trash!
>>
>>32675628
Okay so assuming it's all fine I'll look into piston system cleaning.
>>32675636
How would I find out who made the piston kit? And do I need to do this?
>>32675648
It sounds like taking the piston off isn't much of a problem. Just take off the two screws on the top?
>>
>>32675609

congrats you now have a meme gun
>>
>>32675386
Read and follow
http://primaryweapons.com/documents/2014_mk1_mod1_manual.pdf
>>
>>32675721
What about that bigass yellow book in the box? Have you read that yet?

Failing that, how about contacting the fuckers who gave it to you? IDK man, knowing is half the battle, and you're losing that half right now.
>>
>>32675721
>It sounds like taking the piston off isn't much of a problem. Just take off the two screws on the top?
They'll probably be torqued down with inhuman quantities of force.
t. Armalite owner
>>
>>32675746
read the manual that was included. It doesn't really match the rifle though because it's more for a basic armalite ar and it doesn't even have the piston labeled in the parts section. I guess I could contact the sheriffs department because they're the ones who ran the raffle.
>>
>>32675721
>Okay so assuming it's all fine I'll look into piston system cleaning.
you need to research your particular gas piston system.

>>32675753
>They'll probably be torqued down with inhuman quantities of force.
Can confirm, shit is ridiculous.
>>
>>32675753
Fuck me dude...
>>
Op here, quick question...do I even need to take the long stroke piston off the BCG to clean it? can I just move around it and clean it all the same, just with a little more hassle?
>>
>>32675869
I would take it off, because you don't want to be putting stress on the hole in the charging handle by moving it all over the place.
>>
>>32675890
Okay then. I'll have to move cleaning day back then until I reteach myself through youtube and online instructions on how to maintain the rifle and clean it. Thanks everyone, I hope I gave a few people a good chuckle.
>>
>>32675940
Congrats on winning an AR.
>>
>>32675940
The biggest part is removing carbon from the gas tube and piston and NOT using any lube in there or on the piston.

>>32675890
Don't know if this solves issue that you mentioned.
>>
>>32675981
Thanks bro. I never thought I'd be able to buy a decent AR if I ever got one due to other life expenses...the universe gifted me one and I am still stunned.
>>
>>32676014
it does. It's good that you're not "standard asshole OP no.75432435".
>>
>>32675721
>Just take off the two screws on the top
no, dont ever do that. theyre torqued to a certain inch pound and staked. they arent supposed to come out, especially on a piston rifle because thats there the recoiling force is pushed to.
like the guy above said, you probably have to unscrew it by the flats. judging by the threads in the back of the "gas key", it probably just screws into there.
>>
>>32675997
Noted. I'll make sure to not lube up the gas tube or piston. I can clean it with hoppes though right? I'm running a real basic setup for cleaning so I use hoppes.
>>
>>32676014
keep the piston attached to the BCG clean around it
>>
>>32676054
no reason to even take it off
>>
>>32676134
>>32676159
Yeah after I was able to slide the charging handle off that's what I was guessing. Won't clean it tonight but this thread has helped heaps.
>>
>>32676077
Using hoppes to clean it up the piston every so often is ok, I clean mine every 3-5 range trips, but you don't need to waste the energy to clean it out every time.

The only thing that will happen if try to lube it is that all the lube will burn off in the first shot.
>>
>>32676212
I've gone to range two times and probably shot off only 400 or so rounds. Only wanted to do super basic wipe down cleaning for now but I know it's probably not needed yet.
>>
Okay if anyone is still hanging about I put it all back together. Does the long stroke piston just go in fine (meaning no issues will occur next firing session) when I reinstall the BCG? I'm probably just being paranoid at this point but just not sure if it needs to be put in a certain way because it went in fine and I've cycled the charging handle opening the bolt a few times to make sure everything is in order.
>>
https://armalite.com/shop/m-15-tactical-16/

Armalite even calls it a mid length gas on their website.
>>
>>32676326
So they're bullshitting I assume.
>>
>Eugene Stone has genius simple idea
>Uses hot gas to cycle a firearm instead of a piston
>Greatly simplifies rifle design
>Armalite has financial problem
>Sell genius idea to colt
>Colt gets some of that DoD money
>Army fucks up genius design by not understanding how genius idea work
>Genius idea suffers failure and spawns memes
>Army fixes memes
>Army buys genius idea, now everyone can use genius idea hooray.jpg
>Eugene Stoner dies a happy old man
>Autistic rival manufacturers to include very company who started genius idea shove useless heavy meme tier bullshit into genius idea in order to make it "better" ie like every other gun

In short: piston ars are a meme op but a free gun is better than no gun
>>
>>32676421
technically the AR is a piston system
>>
>>32676399
nah, looks midlength to me.
>>
>>32676421
>thisisbaitdontfallforit.jpg
>>
>>32676310
If you have reassembled your rifle and it passes a function check you should be good to go, just remember to lube the BCG when you go shooting.
>>
>>32676326
>https://armalite.com/shop/m-15-tactical-16/
your looking at the wrong gun
https://armalite.com/files/2015/01/M15PISTON.pdf
>>
>>32676440

Yeah but its not a piston in the same way as most other 'piston' firearms. Its really semantics
>>
>>32676514
What lube is best for BCG? The liquidy lube like lubricating oil, or the thicker paste style lube?
>>
>>32676523
Oh they don't seem to have the M-15 Piston on their website.
>>
>>32676598

>>
>>32676691
So he's using the heavy grease. I'll look into buying some of that. Only own lubricating oil right now.
>>
>>32676598
clp, oil, lithium grease

everyone has a preferred product
>>
>>32676718
oil is fine, grease lasts longer but is messier to clean
