Totally depends on what you're fighting.

Iron is said to ward off evil in general. But not necessarily kill it. And particularly, it is used against Fae (Faeries. But we ain't talking Tinkerbell here.)

Silver, gold, and other precious metals are said to ward off and hurt various creatures. Silver being the "cure all" is a myth though. It is simply thought that precious metals in general are simply more effective than using lead, iron, steel, etc. You'd still have a hell of a time killing say, a Were-creature. (Most of which, have nothing about being weak to silver mentioned in the stories.)

Salt IS the true cure all. But it doesn't really kill anything. It works like Iron, if you simply leave it out, it wards stuff off. If you weaponize it it will weaken/hurt things (You know, like rock salt would to a human. Think of it that way. A way of opening a can of whoop ass, but it won't effectively kill.)

White ash is said to render skin walkers human again. Then you can kill the human. For other stuff? I have no idea.
