Anybody have any friendly fire stories?

>be my cousin
>in afghanistan in early Iraq in early 2000s
>translator acting different after talking to some village dude
>CPT and LT don't notice
>hear it's clear in the west since hostiles went to the east
>travel west and get ambushed
>translator runs away when fighting happened
>one of our guys chases him down and catches him
>he knew something was up and translator is begging not to be killed
>toobad.jpg
>tell LT translator ran away and no one has seen him since

I know there was one in Grozny during 1994 where 2 Russian mechanized units got into a firefight with each other for 6 hours.

That whole siege was pretty much a cluster fuck and has a ton of /k/ tier moments

Yezzzur I have one. I rarely tell anyone about it because of obvious reasons, but it really makes you more aware in general after it happens
>Be Baghdad 2007, back during the heavy fighting
>My platoon and sister platoon clearing houses for hours on end at night.
>Sitting in gun hatch behind 240
>Sister platoon starts taking contact a few streets OVER
>RPGs and SAF come over towards my platoon dismounts on the roof of a house
>Humvees are parked directly in front of the row of houses, houses are parralell to the 9 o'clock of Humvees
>Dismounts on roof return fire
>Gunner in front of me isn't oriented to our friendly location on roof(probably sleep)
>Immediately let's off a burst from his 240 towards our dismounts on roof
>Clearly see one of my buddies drop
>Bullet caught the back of his helmet, looped around the inside and fell out the front
>Force of bullet knocks his NVG mount into his forehead, knocking him unconscious
>Get back to COP and let PSG and other SSGs know I saw
>Get my ass literally chewed out, one of our team leaders called me a snitch(Army logic)
>Standby my story, PSG says the fire could have come from anywhere (obviously multiple units engaging)
>Situation swept under the rug at platoon level, the guy who was gunning gets tasked out to another company a few weeks later
So yah. We also had friendly forces passing by our COP off RTE Irish shoot at our COP a few times (probably natty guard). Training matters

The Chechens, as they could speak fluent Russian, and as a lot of the Chechen rebels were former Russian military and were thus familiar with the Russian radio procedures, would actually go on the radio and do shit like this all the time. Call in Russian artillery in Russian positions, order one Russian unit to attack another, order Russian troops to areas where they had set up for an ambush, etc

Pretty genius actually
>>
>>32662599
That's not murder, it's war.

A war with circumstances easier to win than any war in the recorded history of the universe. all we had to do was kill everyone that was not white. We had technology so vastly superior we could have won without taking a single casualty. The faggot in charge fucked it all up, not accidentally though, they purposely did not win so as to maximize profits. Why use the full range of our capabilities and win in a week when they can drag it in indefinitely for infinite profit?

We should have dropped VX gas on the entire region on day one with simultaneous kinetic/nuclear strikes on any and all hardened targets. Any violent objectors should be dealt with similarly and then once the area was safe we send in cleanup teams and colonize the whole area.

The war in the Middle East is objectively the most complete and utter failure of any war. It's disgraceful.

>3ID during the invasion
>Dismount team leader in a Mech infantry company
>few days into the invasion, pushing towards a Iraqi position
>dismount and get online and start sweeping towards a mortar pit
>suddenly my squad leader is screaming at me
>ANON!!
>I stop and turn to look over my shoulder at him, his arm is outstretched towards me and he has this look of horror on his face
>a heartbeat later, he relaxes and yells "let's go!" and waves me forward
about a week later he pulls me aside and tells me what happened from his point of view. we were online and I was on the far right, with him just behind the squad. he looked over his right shoulder just in time to see an ADA Brad that was attached to our company open fire with it's coax and the rounds were walking along the ground towards me. He said that just as he yelled at me the ADA Brad stopped firing and the last tracer round impacted about 10 feet behind me.

Tangiently related story about an ND

>Helmand, Afghanistan ~April 2011
> finishing up a 9 month deployment from hell
> platoon from 3/4 Marines is replacing us at our patrol base
> for some reason they had never been trained on how to use a LAW rocket launcher.
> One of our sergeants is giving a hip-pocket class to the guys replacing us on how to operate it using a spent casing
> when he depresses the launch lever the thing actually goes off.
> it was a live rocket, not a spent casing
> impacts the ground about 5 ft from the mortar pit's ASP
> luckily didn't travel far enough to arm itself
> EOD digs it out and blows it up on our next patrol

In his defense, he found it laying in a pile of other spent/extended casings, so someone fucked up big time by leaving it there in the first place. He still should have realized it was live by the weight though. This dude wasnt an idiot either. He was the saltiest squad leader in our company and was a phantom fury vet.

That's what you have to do to shoehorn infantry into a police action that should have been handled by an expanded SF detachment and a concerted, long-term cultural solution based in reviving Iraqi/Afghan nationalism over religious tribal loyalty. You're advocating for the genocide of an entire geographical region. Fucking Himmler wasn't even quite that retarded.

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were clusterfucks, but saying "lol just kill everyone" is both morally and politically retarded, as well as just logistically wasteful.

You'd literally be no better than those you're fighting.

The TACP that called it in was borrowing a new system from a SOWT he wasn't used to using. The battery thing is correct, he lased a couple of yards in front of him to calibrate, this location wasn't immediately tossed and ended up being the cords he sent to the bomber. Normally it would flag a warning due to being danger close to his cords, but the weather guys disable that feature because they primarily use the system for reading cloud height. He also did not relay his cords to the bomber because by a few weeks earlier a different SF battalion headquarters dropped a bomb on themselves, so it was directive at the time to not relay his position to avoid the bomber incorrectly punching in the wrong cords.

The bomb was also set to detonate after impact because they were targeting a cave, if it was set to airburst or whatever everyone on their hill would have been vaporized.

The book The Only Thing Worth Dying For details that ODA's mission in Afghanistan and the incident and rescue efforts after, good read, I'd recommend.

not only that, but some chechen and russian commanders served together prior to the war.

There is that particularly gutwrenching radio recording of a russian company being encircled in some aparment building with no hope of reinforcements or rescue where the chechen commander keeps radioing the russian commander (his friend) to just abandon the position and walk away with the life of his men and of himself. All he gets in reply is

>>
>>32680787
I'm sure there are some decent guard units out there but most of them ive ever been around are fudd/jacked the fuck up. I mean you only half ass train a few times a year, as opposed to activity duty who are always doing something, even if just pocket training behind the company area. Back in the days when the guard would deploy, you'd have to serve with these guys in combat with little training

>>

>>32680787
It's common in all 3 components. I'm former AD and my last AD unit is complete dog shit. The Guard unit I deployed with was the most squared away unit I've ever been with, alot of that has to do with half the company being former AD Army and Marines so the joes had some really good leadership. You will find fuckery no matter where you go. A rule of thumb with the Guard is units that are closer to major cities are generally a lot better than po dunk BFE country units. If you want to join the Guard to do Army shit but also to do Guard shit (natural disaster response, ect) then go MP. Find an MP unit in/near a majr city and you'll more than likely be in a decent unit. Guard infantry unit's range from dog shit to barely functioning. MP's generally have the most troops with real careers on the outside where as most combat Guard soldiers are NEET's.

I'm not discounting your opinion, but 143rd MP co, connecticut ng was the biggest shitshow of a company i have every seen.

>Afganistan 2013, andar valley.
>CO getting drunk with junior enlisted
>platoon sergeants encouraging joe to physically fight their leaders if they don't like them
>1sg fucking a married specialist WHILE SHE IS SUPPOSED TO BE PULLING SECURITY IN A TOWER
>No crew served in towers, reason given: joe doesn't know how to use them
>literal holes in the walls that they haven't bothered to fix
>2/3rds of their ncos laughably overweight and out of shape

When my ad inf platoon showed up, shit hit the fan, hard. their 1sg went home, relief for cause. Co was told by battalion to sit on his hands for the rest of their 6 month hitch. their company's only responsibilities were to clean the shitters and pull kp. My platoon took over the rest of operations. They tried to go on one mission, higher found out, and pulled them back in before they got 5 miles down the road.

Completely soured me on NG forever.
>>
>>32682229
They would have been using the M377 90mm canister round. So it would have been, ~6,000 flechette for "foliage removal". There may have been steel or lead ball versions of the round, but who knows, maybe it really happened, probably it really didn't, sounds good though.

>>32682304
A jungle gym is the dome things you see on playgrounds that kids climb on and around. "Story" goes the tank asked for another tank to give it a back scratch and shoot it with a canister round to get the guys off of it.
>>
>>32679471
Fucking yanks. This kind of shit is why you have so many friendly fire incidents. You don't train people well enough and when it does happen you just say "It's just a fact of war and it's unavoidable."
>>
>>32682372
It's really hit or miss from the ~decade I was in. You'd get some nasty girl units who were squared away and had their shit together in a very good way. Others who fit the description you just gave precisely. Stems from that less centralized command back home and more than that what type of leadership and NCOs they have. If their command and NCOs came from an active duty career previous there was a good chance they were going to have their shit together. If the majority of their command and NCOs were pure part-timers from the get-go, they were likely to be flabby, half-assed piles of dysfunctional shit.

That's fucking stupid. When you fly as many sorties as we do, drop as much ordnance as we do and have that much CAS going on, you are going to have some blue on blue fire. It sucks. You learn from it. You move on.

It's easy to sit back and point fingers when you fly fuck-all for CAS sorties. If we break it down by the numbers, the US has a better record than most nations in that regard.
>>

You are pulling this out of your ass. The US conducts more training in this regard than any other nation. Less sorties means less chances of fuckups, period. I'm assuming you're a brit, because it seems all brits think their training is top notch and their pilots and ground pounders are incapable of fucking up, which is very far from the truth.

>>32662932
lel which one?
I had two times at soi where I shit myself
One was during a night shoot trying out our pos nvg and peq, some artillery landed behind the mountain we were at. Even our combat instructors shit themselves and made us run off the range.and leave all our shit. They didn't tell us what happened but we could tell they were pissed after they got off their phones.
The other time was at that range where you advance towards the green dummy targets (they aren't paper Ivans but like those dummies you practice punching in martial arts) some retard shot around me when I was leaping ahead of him
>>
>>32682481
Better than that. Unfortunately we had to rely on them and other ISAF allies more than we would have wanted when deployed to Southern Afghanistan. Definitely unhappy with blowing us up, but to be honest our asses were more chapped by them losing their nerves and leaving us with our dicks swinging in the wind afterward. Waiting for that American bomber was not a fun time and if those mountain monkeys had their shit together, we could have found ourselves in the worst way imaginable without cover from the air.

That being said Dutch air saved our asses on other occasions with good bombs, rockets and guns.

Whatever. The end caps on a LAW (and an AT4, in case you say, "that's what I meant!") make it clear that the round has been fired. Additionally, an unfired LAW tube has to be extended, (and you don't usually re-collapse an expended LAW tube), and the weights of both the LAW and AT4 with the rocket inside are WAY different than a loaded tube.

>everything is silent
>out of nowhere....BOOOOM.... right behind me
>'fuck me, cadre is throwing arty sims at us'
>nope.jpg
>the M60 gunner and AG were cleaning the pig and had a blank round in the chamber.
>also the BFA had been removed

being a blank saved the life of the dude sitting in front of the gun (stupid), but a .308 blank going off unexpectedly after 10 mins of stark silence hurts the ear drums. back n forth shooting of live rounds is deafening as fuck, but your adrenaline is up and you expect the noise so you can manage it. When it comes out of nowhere that shit is extra startling.

moral of both stories....ALWAYS OPEN THE FEED TRAY AND CHECK CHAMBER CLEAR BEFORE CLEANING THE CREW SERVE WEAPONS
>>
>>32682536

Did you even read the story? The live LAW was extended and placed in a pile with other spent, extended casings. That's what caused the mix up. When he was teaching the class he went to grab what he thought was a spent casing from the pile that was supposed to be only spent casings, and grabbed the live one. Like I said he should have realized it was live by the weight and he really fucked up, but its not completely impossible to understand how it happened. The LAW rocket itself is only about 4 lbs, and the casing is 2lbs.

glad you liked it. I also almost got waxed on the final push in to Baghdad. We hit Objective Peach just South of Baghdad in the late afternoon. Shit looked like a movie. Apaches doing Crazy 8's at tree top level, dug in BRDM and BMPs burning and cooking off. On 240Bs and 249s you have to let the bolt ride forward to disassemble which involves pulling the trigger and the feed tray doesnt get carbon and copper in it so brushing the dust out is a secondary process. So if you just came from the field and your not doing you due diligence you more likely to pull the trigger before anything else.

Then there was this a NG combat engineer who put a load of buck shot in his buddy's side. The one that got shot was actually happy, he was going home.

There's a legal obligation to not shoot such enemies, but that also means they'll live to fight again after they escape from Afghan prisons or otherwise make their way out.

There's no moral obligation to a spy or traitor, which the Afghan was. There's also no guarantee he'd have provided useful intel.

You have no business caring about that person unless you are an insurgent or supporter. Whose side are you on? Laws of war are like lethal injection. They allow those who believe in them to pretend unconventional cultural war can be made chivalrous. They do nothing to aid victory in cultural war. You should not confuse European sometimes-chivalrous war with Kulturkampf between Islam and the West. You may compare them to see the difference for yourself.
