I've been building an AR-10 with my dad and found out that the bolt won't engage the bolt catch if it is pulled back all the way as it is too long by 2-3mm. He wants to cut down the little rubber plug on the back of the buffer to make the bolt catch work but I'm worried that doing this will damage the rifle when firing. What are my options /k/?

Buffer tube extension?
>>32652098
dont do that
>>32652098
what spring and buffer are you using? while cutting the rubber pad would work, my concern is the effect after a few hundred rounds. the buffer might end up beating itself apart.

gay ass combat armory cheap chinkshit grip
>>32652159
that's what I thought too
>>32652098
are you sure you are using the right parts?
>>32652098
aye
i built an ar-10 a few months ago, its much harder than an ar-15, since parts arent all interchangeable and stuff.
Since you already kind of got an abortion going, id recommend going with what your father recommends
i had some struggles in regards to fitment, and had to "space" some things, via filing down
go ahead and try it, guns are meant to be abused.
>>32652139
then the stock wouldn't fit and I don't want to spend much more on this rifle
you used a 308 bolt catch right OP?
>>32652098
fucking go for it. The worst thing that could happen is that you could ruin a buffer and have to buy another. Just grinding down the plug isn't going to do anything.
Now, I would question if the BCG is really going completely into battery if you're having this issue with your buffer. It might be worth getting some GO-NO GO gauges and checking that to make sure that isn't artificially causing the issue with the bolt catch.
Again, this might not be the issue, but it doesn't hurt to be too safe, especially with 7.62 NATO.
>>32652171
No idea, honestly. Just what the site we ordered it from gave us.
>>32652183
come to think of it it doesn't seem to want to go into battery when I let the BCG sling forward on spring power
take a pic from the top
any other thoughts?
>>32652277
anything in particular you want to get a good look at?
Are you building an AR-10 patterned rifle or DPMS/LR.308 patterned?
>>32652362
DPMS, at least that's what the website said it was
>>32652372
And you're sure you are using all DPMS patterned parts? Maybe take the spring off and put the buffer back in to rule out the spring binding.
>>32652401
Tried that, it's not spring binding. And no, I'm not entirely sure these are all DPMS pattern parts, the place I got this from is kind of small time and I don't quite trust them, they specialize in budget marksman rifle builds from what I can tell.
>>32652387
just from that pic, it seems like everything should be ok. my adivce to you is try a different receiver extension. you just need to borrow one and instal to see if you can replicate the issue.
one time i assembled a 5.56 rifle and couldnt figure out why the bolt wouldnt lock back on the last round. after a lot of troubleshooting, i realized the issue was right in front of me- the extension was slightly too short.
>>32652426
I have a DPMS patterned .308 and am going to be around for a while if you want me to measure something.
>>32652098
OP I work in a gun store and have seen this issue before. You have an AR-15 buffer tube on your gun. Change it out for a proper AR10 buffer tube and you'll be set.
>>32652436
You're probably right but I like the stock I already have and I don't want to get a new one if I don't have to. Will getting a slightly longer buffer tube mean I can't reuse the stock?
>>32652462
>>32652098
OP I just read elsewhere that you got this all from DPMS?
>>32652462
well shit, where can I buy one from?
>>32652475
https://moriartiarmaments.com/
>>32652493
Did you buy it complete? Did you put it together? Are you using a full rifle length buffer, spring, and tube for that PRS?
>>32652581
Bought it as a parts kit from the site, my dad milled out the 80% and I did parts assembly, the upper was shipped complete and I have no idea what the part specs are anymore, the order was placed months ago.
>>32652481
The top one is from my AR-15. The bottom one is from my .308. The AR one is about 3 1/4 inches

You basically need an AR10 A2 buffer tube kit. The rifle I worked on was literally bought straight from DPMS. It had an AR15 buffer tube on it and the castle nut was only hand tight. Also it looked like it was put on with punches.
>>32652609
Mine is about 6 inches... strange.
>>32652660
Holy fucksticks. Mines a heavy buffer some guy makes so you can use AR-15 stocks.
308 and 5.56 receiver extensions are interchangeable. They use different buffer and spring
>>32652703
is 6 inches unusual for an AR-10 buffer?
>>32652720
I think so. Mines a lot smaller. I googled and these are rifle length buffers with the AR-15 on top and AR-10 on bottom.
>>32652720
6" is ar15 rifle buffer. The ar10 rifle buffer is more like 5.2". It's about a $20 part online. Your spring should be about 12.75" long.
If you try to use a small frame buffer you will not be able to strip rounds out of the mag as the bolt won't be able to go far enough back. Remember, it's the same tube but the carrier is longer, so the buffer has to be shorter.
>pic related one of several AR10 builds I've done.
>>32652794
Forgot pic
>>32652660
thats an ar 15 a2 rifle buffer
so if I throw in the proper buffer this should work as intended without any risky modifications to the rubber pad?
>>32652876
Yes.
>>32652886
Great! Thank you all for the help and preventing me from doing anything excessively dumb.

>DPMS, at least that's what the website said it was
Then u shouldn't call it a AR-10.
They are NOT the same.
>>32652098
you are probably using the wrong recoil buffer or extension. the LR308 patterns use a short buffer and unique spring they are not interchangeable with an AR-15.
>>32652426
take out the spring and buffer and measure them. they have a unique length and number of coils. DPMS and Armalite are not interchangeable. likewise they do not use AR-15 parts (in fact the 308 buffer is smaller than the the Ar-15 rifle buffer).
