carry it everyday, 9x18 and 9x17 are very similar.

I do every great once in a while due to it being my smallest handgun. Less than once a month - can usually figure out how to conceal one of my larger modern guns.

Yes, 9x18 is a little more powerful than .380, but only a little.

Fine if it's all you have, but CZ-82's have better capacity and ergos. Plus, there's plenty of lighter, smaller 9mm offerings with same or better capacity.

Thinking about buying a Bersa Thunder for CC. It's similar in size to a mak right? .380 defensive ammo actually exists too, not sure if 9mm mak does.
>>
>>32650733
I was thinking about getting a Bersa Thunder too, but everyone has told me that 9mm (or 9x18) is far better than 380. Also, 9x18 is fucking dirt cheap
>>
also, is the p64 the same as a makarov?
>>
>>32650879
Maybe true, I don't know. A gun is better than no gun, and I wouldn't like to be shot with anything, so in my opinion .380 is better than nothing. I'm not a big guy, so I don't think I could conceal something much bigger than a mak anyway.
>>
>>32650908
Haha same here, bud

Nah, it's smaller. Less capacity too, non removable rear sights.

East german roleplay for me. I've heard of people using these for cc and hotel room defense. They usually say to get a 380 barrell for it because you can find 380 anywhere.

pm makarovs have better triggers and have less total parts to mess with, vs p64 that have 22lb double actions but these are $100 cheaper. (pm makarov for maximum cheeki breeki)

>>
>>32650028
9x18 is better than 380. not quite as powerful as 9x19. i CC a cz82 and have been happy with it so far. cant see why a p64 or mak would be any different.
>>
>>32651322
they are very different

P-64. Has some serious "walther bite" after 50 rounds your hand will be stinging. Has a loaded chamber indicator which is pretty cool. ergo on it is not bad. Trigger is crisp and clean in single action, double action requires some serious pull. Gun is VERY accurate for its size. I was surprised by this. It eats silver bear like a champ. Never had an issue with it. FTE FTF etc

Bulgarian Mak: I have long believed you can divide gun owners into 2 groups. Those that own makarovs, and those that have never shot them. That being said, the Bulgarian ones are nowhere near as nice as the east german ones, but the price reflects that. Still they are impressive. You can fire hundreds of rounds without getting a sore hand. They send spent shell casings flying. accuracy and reliability are outstanding. Trigger is great is single action, double action is functional compared to a P64. Weight and balance are impressive. Recoil is very manageable. Dollar for dollar I think they are some of the best guns around. FWIW, I keep a bulgarian mak locked up in my trunk with my emergency kit. I have all the faith in the world in it..

They are both great guns, I would go with the Mak... i will warn you though they are addicting.

p64 has 2 less rounds than makarov
>>
>>32651032
I wanna get at least one of each East Bloc service pistol eventually, they're all so cool.

>>32651401
>Has some serious "walther bite" after 50 rounds your hand will be stinging.
P64s are generally far more comfortable to shoot if you have little hands.

t. little hands anon
>>
>>32651462
i copy pasted that from a fud site, but it gets the message across. i also have small slav hands and the makarov fits very well, the mags have a small lip for the pinky

A Bulgie Makarov was my first pistol, and I used to carry it every day. They're fun, accurate and durable, but also heavy and bulky, compared to modern pistols with the same capacity.

I'd say buy it, with the understanding you'll be upgrading when finances permit.

I want to buy a P-64 and clean it up, but just because it looks like a PPK and the real deal PPKs aren't worth what people are paying for them. Word is the triggers suck, but then again fix the triggers, or learn to fix the triggers. That's how the poles would have done it. Throw in some new springs for $15 and smooth out any contacts. Be one with your Rusky self.

OFFICIALLY the 9mmak out performs the 380 in controlled tests. Truthfully, I have doubts you or your chronograph are going to notice any sufficient difference between these two, and 9x19 out of these short barrels. There's an a strong decline in appreciable gain from straight walled calibers in short barrels. You might notice a few fluctuations, but I've never really seen 9mm smoke a mak by more than 75fps, which is still in the ballpark of deviation. In longer barrels things are a much different story however.

But if you're like me you'll wind up spending more time and energy in fixing the gun up. All of these warpact guns are always fixer uppers the moment you get them. Of all the guns I own, I've spent more time cleaning, shaping, and resurfacing the 11 or 12 warpact guns more than anything else I own. But such is the case when you own your own little toybox with lathe, mill, and blasting cabinet.

>>
>>32650733
>>32650879
There's defense ammo for both. Visit your local Cabelas or Cabelasish store and you'll find a whole shelf full of it.

I'm willing to wager that the majority of off the street gun owners don't even realize the 380 and 9mm are the same bullet, so any ballistic advice from them should probably be taken as seriously as a mixed drink named after Bill Cosby. The differences in casing geometry between the two are more about regional litigation from their country of origin than performance consideration. In fact, in short stubby barrels the ballistics are about identical.

You should probably be asking yourself whether you want a gun your buddies will appreciate or a gun an intruder won't. In the situation where a gun matters, you won't find any difference.
>>
>>32650908
You'd be surprised how easily it is to hide a gun. I'm 5'2" and 120lbs and I carry a Walther PPQ M2 in 9mm.
>>
>>32650189
>reloading a meme cartridge only used in one common gun
lmao
I love Maks aesthetically but they're crap ccw
>>
>>32652734
Ehhhh yes and no. The heaviest bullet that you can load in a .380 (without powering it with a mouse fart) is 114, which is the lightest commercially available 9x19 bullet. Most defensive 9x19 will be 124gr with a spicy charge behind it, so compared to a spicy self defense loading of .380 which is commonly 90 or 100gr, even if it has a similar velocity out of a short barrel, will penetrate less because of its lower mass.
>>
>>32652845
Pretty sure he meant load a new magazine since he was responding to a criticism of capacity.

Actually reloading 9mm mak isnt a bad idea though since you can easily convert 9x19 brass and save shekels.

Can anyone recommend a way to touch up the grips. The color on mine is great except for the bottom where the magazine release is.
>>
Used to. 9x18 is marginally better, practically the same in terminal performance though, it puts holes in things.
>>
>>32650968

Yes it does. But the double action pull is about 24-25 pounds without a spring replacement.

However, you can put the safety about halfway down on single action to engage the hammer block and disengage the trigger. That's what I do with mine.

9x18 is much closer to 9x17 than 9x19 in terms of power. It's a very, very slightly more powerful .380

>>

True, I've left CLP on the area for a bit and tried rubbing in there with a q-tip (honestly what I typically clean my guns with outside of the bore), I don't want to hurt the bluing but it needs something mildly invasive to scrape it out. Any advice? Would a standard toothbrush fuck with the bluing?

The P64 is essentially a Polish copy of the German Walther PPK in 9mm Makarov. It's an excellent CCW.

The double action is insanely heavy but a $10 set of Wolf springs fixes that. The single action is great.

Someone local is offering a used Baikal double stack Mak, 1 mag, and a couple boxes of ammo for $350.

y/n? Under 21 so this might be my only opportunity to get a 9x18 for at least 1 year.
>>
>>32664494
Thats a good deal if you want the double stack.
>>

Not really, but it's better than nothing. I heard it will still take the 8 rounders even though it's a less than stellar fit.

Hammer bite is pretty bad if you have a high grip.
Mag release is almost a push-button that ejects it, really crisp even on an empty magazine.
>>
Should I save my money and buy a russian surplus mak, or would one of the civilian Baikal maks be fine? How do they compare?
