Fallout tactics. Old, strays from the fallout canon, but looks and plays quite well even now. Lots of guns, accurate use of calibers (you can have your snowflake gun, but good luck finding the right ammo), ap, hollowpoint bullets, explosives, heavy daka, somewhat accurate medicine system and so on. Story sucks in comparison to fallout 1-2 and NV, but the game is very playable. There is nothing like blasting a doped up tough guy melee raider to peaces by a short ak burst from your entire squad.

I wish that game devlopers made realistic games like the originals ghost recon/rainbow six

Eagle Watch IIRC. It also added in the Deagle brand Deagle to R6.

I played the shit out of the original R6 and eventually moved on to CS. I remember loading up the WON network, the old Microsoft MPlayer, and Gamespy Arcade to play online matches.

>>
>>32651951
STCoP leans heavily on milsurp slavshit, with the guns that don't fit that mold being pretty rare and usually in the hands of people who would have some kind of chance at having them.

AO just floods the Zone with guns that barely exist in the real world with no regard to how they ended up in the hands of vodkanigger fuckups so impoverished that they end up in the Zone trying to eke out a living while by all accounts the world outside is massively benefiting from the scientific advances provided by materials smuggled out of the Zone.

I've played CoC with both. Neither is perfect by any means but IMO one is a lot more immersion-breaking than the other and what's the point of STALKER without immersion?

Of the 3 weapon overhauls for CoC I find STCoP to be the most logical.

A while back someone in /sg/ was working on a big weapon mod overhaul/merge thing he was calling "weaponsgulash" where he was putting a LOT of thought into who/what/where/when/why/how of specific guns being in the Zone. So you'd see rare snowflake guns but they'd only be in the hands of people who would conceivably have the resources to get said gun from the outside, and each individual was tied to their faction's supply lines as well as their experience level/personal means, so most STALKERs were just using civilian milsurp shit unless they specifically had a reason not to be.

Looked promising.

Mostly I'm just happy you didn't recommend MISERY. MISERY a shit.
>>
>>32652775
Like I said, I'd love to be wrong. But I've been through this song and dance too many times in the last 10-12 years to get hyped by really promising shit put out by Slavs. It's like 85% chance it falls apart or only gets released in an extremely diminished capacity, because that's what happens to ambitious Slav games.

If they can deliver on what they're promising it would be incredible but I'm not gonna get invested in it because you can't trust Slavs.

To add, Jagged Alliance 2 doesn't just have Tonnes of Guns (including a setting called that, which does what it says).

You take the role of a professional mercenary leading a team of other mercenaries (many with eccentric personalities) in the fight to liberate the tiny mineral rich nation of Arulco from its evil dictator.

That's why it's the most /k/ game. It even has a guy named IVAN who speaks broken english and Russian.

USA certainly has the highest number of high tech/quality units.

Longbow, ATACMS, DEAGLE, Patriot, A3 Chapparels, M1A2 including HA and HC variants. M8 AGS, Bradley scout vehicle.

And none of that is including the air tab which is FULL of options.

Oh and TOMCATS!!!!!

The Tomcats broke my heart when I realized they couldn't target helicopters.

Did you turn of cut scenes?

Because Deidranna is the queen of Arulco and the head of the government you're fighting against. It's pretty explicitly named multiple times throughout the game.
>>
There's a good write-up by Darius Kazemi on the JA series. I paid for a copy a while back, take his name to google and it should be easy to find.

Basically, SirTech wanted to make tactical vidya, and figured the mystique of 80s mercenaries would fit well for style. JA just kinda went from there

Then when they started on #2, they got a lot of fanmail from people who subscribed to Soldier of Fortune (which was their main 'source') and realised how many gamers were also into guns as something more than a utilitarian object for deadening things. To SirTech, they saw guns as upgradable objects. You start with a pistol, go up to heavy pistol, SMG, rifle, so on. Not Glock to 1911 to Python and the like.

That's why vanilla JA2 has the gun selector option - basic is game balanced, simple choices of firearms. Tons o guns is if you want variety in guns and ammunition, which arent as well balanced but it's still perfectly fine to play with. That was added purely to appease their gun nut fans, not a core focus

And that's why the author is dismissive of 1.13s fetish for adding all the guns- because it's becoming less about choice, and simply more bloat. I reckon that's the same reason attempts at JA3 have failed, they don't have the same objectives in design SirTech did, resulting in a mediocre game, even with 100+ modifiable rifles to choose from (see- Brigade E5 / 7.62 HC)
>>
>>32663277
My only gripe with it is that the absurd weaponry options bleed over into Deidranna's troops; sure, let me buy a 10mm Delta Elite off Bobby Ray or w/e, but I shouldn't be finding special snowflake shit like that off of random redshirts.

The cobbled-together armaments angle of her military make sense when you're talking cold-war surplus and the like, but not when it expands out to Canada-only M4 derivatives and Belgian police DMRs.

I've always tended towards weapon ammunition standardization and magazine interchangability in my games. Later 1.13 allowed a shitton of mercs, I'd usually have a "squad" with 3 teams that travelled together - the 3rd team using 7.62 GPMG's, Rifles, and DMR's/Sniper Rifles.

That said for people like >>32663366 and me, who get fed up of Diedrannas troops having ALL the guns there are configs that limit the enemyitemchoices to Eastern/Russian/Chinese, Western/US, South American (Mix - Mostly FAL's), WW2, hollywood, futuristic, etc although these configs are usually dependent on Instruments of Violence mod (I always play with it anyway, something about MG Tripods, AGL's, Multipurpose launchers including thermobarics, and a Robot with a KORD or a GSh-6-23, or 25mm XM, or a .50 M2, as well as a shitton of WW2 stuff makes it worth it
>>
>>32663277
Vanilla becomes quite a challenge logistically, enemies rarely drop guns (not that it's important) and they don't drop ammo enough. Keeping your mercs properly loaded with enough ammo to lay the shit on thick can be a challenge
>>
>>32646049
>Jagged
Jagged alliance play it if you haven't. Need modern mods to run it but it's good af (untill niggers try to overrun the first city you take)
>>
>>32666099
I always play with Drassen assault on and faster than normal enemyitemprogression, although I admit it can get kinda gay when you wipe the initial wave and the other two adjacent sectors attack, putting enemy troops danger close to your mercs
>>
>>32666080
I learned early that you never burst fire. Single maximum aim shots only, even with the Minimi and -23/21 machine guns. Helps stretch out you ammo

The best thing 1.13 did- give a purpose to automatic fire and especially having a squad LMG for suppressing fire.
>>
>>32666099
Cap the airport, order your tons of guns and ammo, outfit your guys before you seize the rest of Drassen. Lay it on thick, go for suppression, keep your mercs close enough for security, interrupts, and interlocking fields of fire. I always prefer to defend the Church/Mine Sector - the airport can be a pain in the ass if attacked from the east if you clipped/blew up the fence, and is a royal pain if attacked from the North or esp. the West.
The middle sector (hectors Bar and the child labor factory making T shirts) isn't the most defensible, it's gets hard if attacked from the north or west
>>
>>32666133
Vanilla still had a (worse than 1.13) suppression mechanism, you could still sap AP and cause the enemy to kneel/prone. I looked at it like this, If I had a merc who was out of AP and exposed and a enemy had a good chance to hit him, I'd rather a merc with a bad chance to hit sprayed than took unlikely potshots. Even a -3AP grazing hit from a burst makes a world of difference and will likely throw that enemies shot.
Notice when I refer to burst I mean AUTO. 2/3rd Burst in vanilla, and even in 1.13 in some cases is garbage.

Even in 1.13 I would only use it for riflemen to pick up the effective rate of fire, if they are using M16A2's, while the SAW/gunner is moving up/catching up
>>
>>32666140
First playthrough I got fucked at alma
. Counter attack happened when I was running back to the airport to get better guns and ammo. I had a guy stuck in the church shooting out the windows from prone to hold off the offense but he got shot with a shotgun. When i got back to Pablo it turns out I didn't bribe him enough and bobby ray jewed me. Not enough ammo and shitty weapons, was able to take back alma but fuck...

>>
Where do people get their IoV mod for JA2 anyway, I go to the 1.13 site and forum and it links to some chink shit which I am suspicious of.

Does it just add guns, or also new armor and other shit?
>>
>>32668020
It works, just select the english version.

Ask around the forum if you're having trouble.
>>
>>32668114
So what what exactly does it add, just more funs or anti-fun armor, LBE, etc?
>>
>>32663692
Try out the Metro series.
>>
>>32668426
Lots more funs, more fun accessories, more LBE gear, more nightvision, more explosives, more armour.

Do note that the Kevlar spray coating doesn't work, but with plenty of armour plates for ballistic vests you have some good options. You can also add other accessories to the armour (like gillie suits, camouflage, attaching nightvision/sungoggles to your helmet, kneepads, etc)

The 1.13 also improves upon the interuption system and the means of accurate fire is far better than the vanilla. You get an indication (using colour) to tell you how likely you are to hit the target. For example Red is not very likely, Bright Green is pretty much dead on.

They also changed up burst/full auto at bit too. You can dictate how much you shoot in full auto, while burst is your 3 shot burst (unless its the AN-94). Do note that unless your character isn't particularly skilled with full auto (or are crazy) they'll usually pop off more rounds than they intend to (using up more AP).

The AI are much more intelligent and sneaky as well. They'll hop up on the rooftops if you decide to fight from there, they won't just huddle at the wall and wait for you to come into sight or hop down. They are more likely to seek you out and destroy rather than passively just wait for you (unless you're using silent means of killing your foes).

Also you can set the game so that enemies drop all of their loot. Which really sucked in the Vanilla as you'd rarely get a weapon drop and usually just some ammo and a first aid kit. As such you can equip your guys fair well as you progress through the game.

Fallout 2 is really good. However, it certainly helps to know a bit of the game in terms of quests and knowing the various builds.

As with that knowledge you can craft a very all around strong character who can handle themselves in most situations.

Whereas Fallout 1 you just needed to read books for small arms, get a sniper rifle, farm up on DeathClaws at lvl 3. Spend you skill points on Energy weapons, get a plasma rifle (upgrade it as soon as possible), and with power armour you were nigh invincible.

This.

What made vanilla JA2 hard in late game was the combined facts of:

1) Enemy not dropping much 7.62x51 which was good enough to put down enemies during a single turn.

2) Enemy greyshirt elites taking 5.56x45 like Tony Montana, getting to play their turn before dying - which slowly accumulates into your squad getting badly wounded after every few sectors.

I think the suppression mechanic really was there, even in vanilla JA2, but it was fucked and did not work as it was supposed to - some calculation stuff that never got fixed despite numerous patches.

Basically it worked but had very little effect. IIRC they fixed the code in v1.13.

>>
>>32680678
Better to start off with 1.13. Again the demo is a good litmus test to see if you like the Vanilla system. It'll wreck you hard if you're not careful. Especially when ammo and guns start either running out or breaking down on you.

The demo will give you an insight on the kinds of attachments you can get and it removes mercs having beef or being best friends.

You start off with Ivan, Shadow, Dr. Q, Vicki (ambi-shooter), and Gasket (most useless in the demo, normally hates Ivan). The mission is simple kill all the baddies on the surface level and in the basement of the complex.

The demo is just a quick and easy way to play the game without having to invest much into it. If you don't enjoy it, start off and only play 1.13.

Rimworld does some things better than DF, but DF is the more in-depth building game. In-depth in more ways than one, since rimworld completely lacks Z-levels.

Rimworld for example does calculate temperatures between different rooms and outside, and you will need warm clothing if you are to survive through the winter in the north. RW has a better prison system, where you can imprison raiders and convince them to join your colony. RW lacks DF's water physics, and colonists don't actually need to drink at all, but it does allow you to harvest organs off of prisoners and sell them to traders.

Oh and mods. RW's modding community is sizeable and new mods pop up by the day. People have already made mars colony mods with air pressure modelling and everything, as well as cthulhu mod where you can found cults and worship the old ones, sacrificing prisoners and shit to them.

I'd say that DF is more macro focused, with you being completely unable to directly control dwarves aside from drafting them and telling them where to stand, while RW is more about the indivudual colonists.

brigade E5 and 7.62 i will say unironically are better ideas than JA2

They fail as games not because of what you just said but because the features outside of the combat and equipment mechanics are lacking. E5 is basically a tech demo with no coherent story and repetitive missons. 7.62 is slightly more polished but again lacks an interesting story or locales. Its actually a dumbed down version of E5 amazingly, E5 had enterable buildings with large amounts of rooms, 7.62 you can count on one hand the amount of enterable buildings and the geometry is simple. E5 also had a working suppressive fire system whereas it is it does absolutely nothing in 7.62 where you are better off making everyone marksmen.

But without a doubt the smart pause system and inclusion of actual bullets, true los/aimpoint, real cover provided by actual geometry etc is 100% an improvement over JA2's turn based rpg mechanics.

JA2 isnt really a tactical game in the sense most people mean with that term and I'm not sure where this undying belief comes from. Its an rpg with guns, which is why you can win the game with absolutely goofy and cheesy tactics.

> tank fetish simulator
> infantry combat is poorly simulated
> GUI is absolutely horrid.

these small sim companies complain (especially battlefront who will winge constantly) that theirs is a niche market because of how ~real~ their sims are, but the truth is their products are not successful with a wider audience because the design is trash.

There is nothing in a simulator that requires unintuitive, bloated or tedious GUIs and control schemes.

>>
>>32687663
Ah, didn't think so, thanks anyways. I'll continue to ease my pain with Nebelwerfer barrages.
>>
>>32687583

i dont mind tanks but its a bugbear of mine with the simulation market.

its almost entirely focused on only either the armored or air aspect, and infantry is treated as an afterthought not simulated at all where they are just used effectively as lemmings.

to me the depth and breadth of infantry combat is just as interesting as armored combat. The only game that even comes close is combat mission series from shock force onwards.
>>
>>32687713
Oh Jesus nebelwerfers are absolutely devastating.
>Have to take a village
>Have two nebelwerfer batteries on station
>Don't want to just run at the town like the last 100 times and lose all my men
>Decide to soften up the town before I go in
>Have never used nebelwerfers before, not sure what to expect
>Call it in
>Lidice 2.0
>Just stroll into the village, not even a shot is fired
>Of the 200 Russians defending the village, 190 were blitzed and the 10 survivors just straight up deserted
>Lost only one half-track when it inexplicably flipped on a bale of hay
>Wasn't much of a town left to take
Would raze again t.bh
>>
>>32687865
>Two Nebelwerfer batteries
There used to be a town here?
Only thing better would be if we could fire gas cannisters. Though Nebelwerfer incendiaries seem a bit dubious, they kill T-34's in one hit.
>>
>>32687865
Incendiaries are more effective than HE imo. They do a good job of getting infantry wherever they are, and leave behind buildings for your men to hole up in and defend. But if you really REALLY want to level something, use HE barrages first, then follow up with incendiaries to mop up infantry.
Also as a side note, if you just have normal arty with smoke rounds, you can drop those on infantry as WP. Burns nice, and also provides some screening for your troops.
>>
>>32646506
Literal garbage since you cant "play" offline
>>
>>32688056
I'll use any artillery I've got, anything 105 landing near you will fuck your day up, still scared of on screen arty though. Pretty sure they just aim at their own.
>>
Are you crazy people? Where is ArmA 3?
>>
>>32688095
Yeah the howitzers are weird. I still have no idea how to use them for indirect fire support. I just use them as big AT guns or some sort of direct fire.
Also if you're feeling lucky you can use the tanks to squash things. Don't recommend it though, but I think it's fun.
>>
>>32688189
I thought the Firing leaders were like spotters but it didn't seem to help much when I moved them to the front so I've got no clue. Did have one match where I looked at the penetrations and there was a load of 10.5cm pens though, never noticed Howitzercoming in though.
In Russian armour sure, not trying that in anything German though, a Russian sneezes and a field gun pops out.
>>
>>32688221
Yeah for some reason Russians have 45mm AT in their shoes at any given time. There is always one, and you will always lose a half-track to it. Also the molotovs are nightmares in a bottle.

As someone who has been a fan of the series since OFP, I can say unequivocally that arma 3 has been RUINED by dayz knockoffs and the 3rd person disease

Good luck finding good pvp in arma 3, it doesn't exist. coop yeah thats nice and all, but the amount of set up involved in getting mods, joining a group, mission desinging yadda yadda

its tiresome. Once escape from tarkov comes out i dont think ill ever bother with arma again.

It really is. In a give-no-fucks and collect all the guns you can. I mean, you kick a toilet in that game and guns explode out of it.

>>32650148
>and Rainbow Six for that matter
R6 was amazing, even though the novel was pretty trash (see Clancy above). Clancy is literally a military pornographer who spends paragraphs talking about the coiled athleticism of spec ops soldiers as they lope through the darkness to their prey, invisible in their terrain specific camoflague but seeing every detail in their nvg as they grasp their finely crafted weapons and take silent shots at the tangos, the bolt in the mp5sd being the loudest sound in the night, little more louder than a chirping cricket, totally unheard by their targets who fall with clockwork precision...and if that sentence got you hard then Clancy is your thing.

The game was outstanding though, I'm not sure we've seen anything that involved those kind of planning mechanics since. R6:Vegas was a slap in the face, even though it was a really great game, it just wasn't anything to do with the rest of R6, it was basically Splinter Cell: Cops.
