This is the IS video from Deir Ezzor today. They advanced on the northwest side of the airport in the cemetery in a ongoing large offensive(that I warned about btw) however the SAA repelled them from the east side at Juffa village and flew in reinforcements to the airbase.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5zZkY6E3n0

T4 is on and popping right now. It started with a SAA offensive toward the north east of the base with the SAA advancing but the latest reports are of IS attacks on the west side of the airbase as well as a VBIED.

Its nothing to be surprised about. It's actually quite similar to what happened to the Iraqi security forces. They never had to deal with a hardened enemy that had the manpower and resources to handle pitched fighting. Plus the fact that the units are a mix of regular and irregular """moderates""" probably makes unit cohesion much harder.

Formerly Deir Ezzor SS reports IS took control of some type of barracks or "officers housing" building. This goes along with IS supposedly capturing a bunch of SAA today(no proof yet). I think this building is where they captured prisoners.

Yes, read the posts. the SAA isn't shipping their depleted stock of weapons to the lebs or Gaza. They are fighting for their lives. The childish squable in Israel is a 4year old kiddie birthday to what's happening in Syria.

my bad, it's quite late and I didn't quite comprehend the direction the convo was going. I just mentioned the Israeli rationale since I thought it was what is actually happening. But in addition to that, the SAA has received a hefty amount of equipment from Russia, some that im sure is being traded for possibly more manpower with Hez. But that's just an unproven theory I have.

Anyways, im heading to bed.

Would anyone (except Israel and USA) be mad if an Israeli plane was shot down over Syria?
>>
>>32655732
Everyone including USA would be overjoyed if that happens, that's just the sort of provocation/excuse they are looking for to justify cold war v2.
>>

Kek, by who? SAA doesn't have the capability and the russians don't seem to give a shit.
>>
>>32655284
They didn't.
>>
>>32655732
Not really.
If we ignore the how question, so long as it was violating Syrian airspace it would be a perfectly justified shoot, same as if SyAF shot down anything US/Turk/British that was in their airspace without permission. Of course there would be some grumbling and claims of "we were only fighting IS" (regardless of how blatantly or not that was/not the case) but if you fly into someone elses country you can't really get mad or expect anyone else to do so on your behalf if they shoot at you.
>>
>>32655645
To sum up the entire situation SOHR has the goods and i'll leave it at that.
First is SAA advancement in the hills around T4 in their offensive in eastern Homs backed by the Ruaf.
http://www.syriahr.com/en/?p=59124

And 2nd is IS in Deir Ezzor advancing on Mt Thardah and trying to cut off the airbase from the city. Cutting off the airbase would isolate SAA repub guard in the airbase and make reinforcing the city impossible. IS also trying to take brigade 137ths base on the other side of the city for the millionth time as well.

>>
can deir ezzor realistically fall?
>>
>>32656528
https://twitter.com/Jacm212/status/820692145887703040
IS has the video of capturing the housing complex up. Lucky for the SAA they only ended up capturing 5 NDF prisoners yesterday. It could have worse.
>>
>>32656617
The SAA has long given up trying to break the siege. As long as they are surrounded it's a possibility. The SAA has bravery held out until now but they have never turned the situation around. IS just keeps chipping away. It's like the SAA version of eastern Ghouta. They can't hold out forever.
>>
>>32656736
what strategical value does deir ezzor hold? Any estimates on how many people remain trapped in there?
>>
>>32656762
Deir Ezzor in the key to all of eastern Syria leading up to Iraq. IS would use this as their fall back city for Mosul.

Off the top of my head at least 100,000 people are trapped in the city and up to 3,000 SAA and thousands more NDF.
>>
>>32655157
I thought the Rebels had used all their TOWs.
>>
>>32656796
In the last hour Deir Ezzor 24 reports IS took control of the Assad hospital as heavy air raids hit all areas of the city. Did the SAA at least evacuate the hospital? Because if they didn't.......

Biggest change since Aleppo would be the loss of Palmyra (again), Russians and whatever left of the SAA in the area are holed up in the T4 airbase down the road from Palmyra itself. IS have been all over the perimeter but haven't quite managed to push into the base itself just yet, and frankly most recently things seem to have stalled out in the area for now with both sides trading a few yards of territory back and forth between them each day.

IS managed to ATGM a couple of SyAF planes in exposed hangars at Deir Ezzor a few days ago, and as you can tell from this thread things have been heating up there again in general.

Kurds have been continuing their steady occupation of the mostly open country north of Raqqa, which iirc was ongoing already when Aleppo saga was still running. Whilst they've largely taken all the territory north/northwest of Raqqa with few casualties expect them to drag their feet more and more the closer they get to potential urban fighting, they know that's where IS can put up a real fight and I doubt they've suddenly gained any great motivation to go die for the US trying to take a city of no interest to them.

Everywhere else has been the usual mix of clashes, arty and counter arty all ways, and airstrikes by RuAF/SyAF and occasionally USAF with little notable net change to show, ie same shit as ever.

The one that has the most to loose from such accident is Syria itself. You think that they need the Israelis joining the party in full scale?
"Destabilizing the Middle East" is a cool theory, but it's just a theory within the lines of "well, it makes sense in my head". For decades, the Syrian-Israeli border was the quietest one in the region, with just he occasional Israeli attack whenever a Syrian move was deemed a "tiebreaker". The Israelis were always also smart enough never to admit that it was them, making it all in blurry "supposedly Israel" lines, thus leaving the option of not retaliating open- an option that the Syrians took full advantage of because they understand that it's just part of the game, and because they're the last ones interested in renewing the war with Israel.

IS Map of IS advancing into the Harrabesh district, Deir Ezzor in green. Reports of IS moving on N-7 north of the Assad hospital taking a small army base. In Harrabesh IS destroyed a bus full of SAA soldiers and 3 other cars. Overall SAA loses include a tank, Shilka and 57mm cannon technical.

tl;dr the airbase if cut off

>>
>>32667741
Whilst that could help it would likely need to be a fairly sizable contingent, which given the extreme isolation and difficulties not only getting them there but also out again should it all go tits up makes it seem rather unlikely to me that they'd take such a gamble. Sending men to help with offensives like Aleppo or possibly to help hold a similar area connected to the bulk of SAA territory is one thing, putting them out somewhere utterly isolated and under siege, with zero chance of being relieved any time remotely soon is too big a disaster waiting to happen.
Not only that but for the Russians T4 is already a significant problem that needs fixing, in terms of securing their men from the potential clutches of IS, they don't need another one, especially one that isn't an immediate threat to Assad's survival.

That corridor between the town and the airport is gonna get bombed to shit.

But I actually have to commend ISIL for being able to withstand the Turks while simultaneously advancing on SAA territory. But then again the Turkish advance has been riddled with failures well before they came up against heavy resistance and the SAA is focusing on getting rid of the last few pockets of resistance in the West.
>>
I keep seeing more and more reports of things falling.
IS might have breached the SAA's defensive lines tbqh.
>>
>>32669233
If that has happened, and given the amount of false information throughout the war it's a big if, then it's over for the SAA and NDF in Deir. There is not much in the way of secondary defensive lines, as so far they have been relying on counter attacks to stabilize the line and drive ISIS back.

Does it seem to anyone else that ISIS has pulled troops from mosul to help on the SYrian fronts? I mean they have collapsed rather dramatically in the past week in Eastern Mosul, and yet they are suddenly able to retake Palymra, pressure T4, drive back the turks at Al Bab, and possibly have cracked the nut which is Deir.
>>
SAA has launched a counteroffensive on ISIL positions in Deir Ezzor in an attempt to link back together the two pockets that were recently split. RuAF and SyAF are as predicted pounding ISIL positions right before ground troops attempt to attack the corridor that separates the town from the airport.

A quote from the the commanding officer in the region: "Major General Issam Zahreddine has quoted him as saying that the morale of the soldiers is extremely high despite some of the setbacks faced earlier in the day." (taken from AMN).

While there are no reports where the attack is taking place, it is most likely that they are targeting the cemetery and the Tahtuh district.

>>32668856
Turks already accomplished their goal of isolating the afrin pocket from the rest of rojava. And they are the rebel power brokers already in discussions with russia and the SAA so there goes a lot of the tension between assad loyalists and turkish troops. Hell Russia and SAAF have even given turks some air support too.

They couldn't give 2 shits about actually pushing against ISIS now. They've gotten what they've wanted.
>>
>>32669880
not entirely. Al-Bab is the last part of the puzzle to lock out the Kurds in the Afrin pocket from linking up with their allies near Manjib. Granted, as it stands it's incredibly hard for the Kurds to link up right now with the Turks so close. But if the Kurds in Afrin manage to reach the M4 highway (which passes right next to Al Bab) they might be able to link up or in the very least threaten to link up. So if the Turks take Al-Bab, it makes linking up almost impossible due to how far the Kurds would have to push south in order to link up.

But I agree that as it stands the Kurds aren't gonna risk further fighting with the Turks in order to link up. But the possibility of them linking up is what is pushing the Turks to capture Al-Bab.
>>
>>32669712
>SAA has launched a counteroffensive
>morale of the soldiers is extremely high despite """"some""""" of the setbacks

That is their official line for the last three days now. Everything is fine, huge isis losses, no we are not split in two, well maybe we are split, but everything will be reversed and so on.
I mean, what else should they say?
>>
>>32670233
Not the one you are talking with, but your point doesnt hold.
The Turks are at the west and north of Al-Bab and practically at the east as well. The one way to bypass the city is at the south, and this are just some 2 or 3 hardly defended villages, which the Turks are not taking to leave a way out for ISIS and because its too close to the SAA.
Taking Al-Bab doesnt change anything in the way of blocking the kurds (besides of course securing the current turkish positions). Its purely the get ISIS out of the way and to get the pro-turkish rebels a real town for a change.
>>
>>32669620
>Does it seem to anyone else that ISIS has pulled troops from mosul to help on the SYrian fronts?
Not really. The recent advances in East Mosul are not because fighters have been withdrawn (its impossible because its completely surrounded and the bridges blown up) but that they are massively outnumbered and outequipped.
Surely they had transferred some troops in late autumn when it became clear that the Mosul offensive was getting started. But they still had left a large number in Eastern MOsul to bloodily stall the advance in the first months, and extremely likely still have their best troops in Western Mosul, so the core of their fighting force there had remained in Mosul.

As it has been pointed out repeatedly, ISIS is a de-central force which operates independently, be it in Nineveh, around Raqqa, in Eastern Aleppo countryside or in Deir az Zour.
>>
>>32670233
oh and forgot another update on Deir Ezzor

As the RuAF and SyAF bomb ISIL positions in the town. ISIL units are reportedly attempting to push even deeper into SAA held territory to the north of the airport.

>>32670274
The current reports coming from the SAA in the town that I read acknowledged the split but were confident that they'd be able to make up for their losses and connect the two pockets. They can be as confident as they want, but the current report that ISIL is pushing near the airport paints a grim picture for the two pockets.

>>32670340
interesting point. Maybe im putting too much emphasis on the M4 highway as a axis of advance for the Kurds.
>>
>>32669712
Well what else is he gonna say?
>"Yeah we're fucked and everyone is taking off their uniforms and fleeing".
Like, don't get me wrong, the SAA aren't done yet, but like Zahreddine isn't going to be an unbiased source.
>>
>>32670426
The M4 is already cut to the west (south of Aqil Hill) and to the east (at the whole Qabasin and Bzaah shitshow, which nontheless has the Turks & Friends holding the M4 east of them) of al-Bab.

>>32670426
>ISIL units are reportedly attempting to push even deeper into SAA held territory to the north of the airport.
Makes sense doing it in the night. Also, because half the world is bombing them, they really need to achieve the maximum amount of success at the first try, before the frontlines settle down again.

I would say, if they want to seriously threaten Deir or the airport they need more ground captured during the night today, otherwise the airbase might still be isolated and still fall at one point in the future, but not right now.
And they might have learned from watching the Aleppo Arty College offensive, that holding a small break-through under intense air strikes for a longer period of time might turn pretty ugly down the line

Yes su-25s and hinds are ideal for this kind of stuff but the anti aircraft fire keeps them at altituded and finding enough targets in the desert before you run out of fuel is difficult without the proper Intel or censors. >Does it seem to anyone else that ISIS has pulled troops from mosul to help on the SYrian fronts

that was the first thing, beeing obviously when the iraqi army/PMU estimated, that there are just a few thousand ISIS fighters left in mosul.

They didnt vanished, they moved westwards.
Shit is really fucked up, not "only" that DEZ may fall, also that this would free up thousands more ISIS fighters to attack the SAA later in east Homs and every where they like to.

This will definitivly have more impact than the (second) fall of palmyra - that was mostly just a propaganda tool, this will both, military and propaganda win for ISIS
>>
Does IS have some sort of command center? Or is just a glorified union of warbands, united by ideology?
>>
AMN released a decent video with a brief summary and update on the Palmyra front.

>>32678075
They have a fairly complex and strong command hierarchy, granted some units might have more freedom of action than others, but the vast majority of their commanders should be well trained or in the very least combat veterans. Iraqi Baathist officers made up a large portion of the CO's in ISIL. I don't know how their numbers have held up as of recently, but their knowledge and expertise should have spread to their subordinates and even their proteges.

They might seem like glorified war bands physically, but their attacks on Deir Ezzor and their resistance against Turkish/FSA assaults on Al Bab as well as bitterly holding what's left of Mosul show that even sand people can be dangerous if led by good commanders.

Just for the sake of discussion, how many sorties would be required per week/month to supply the western pocket in Deir Ezzor with food and ammunition? IIRC there are thousands of fighters in there and tens of thousands of civillians. How would they be able to maintain that many people by airdrop supply, and for how long.
>>

Seems like government forces started attacking and advancing against ISIS north of Kweires, towards Al-Bab.

Also, the death toll in Deyr-Ez-Zor keeps climbing for the SAA, with the latest high profile death being a major general and a colonel defending the airport.
ISIS is also trying to advance on the army bases immediately west of the city, and fortifying the positions gained yesterday. Reports are also surfacing that they're also preparing for another offensive against both te city and the airport at the same time, to try and widen the corrider they created.
RuAF and SyAAF are bombing the corridor non-stop. ISIS images from the corridor only show rocks and craters.
They're reportedly using a vast amount of child soldiers in the offensive, and may be diverting troops from the Raqqa defense agains the kurds towards Deyr-Ez-Zor, which shows that they're also losing a bunch of troops.

I think that, at this moment, ISIS has the majority of their troops in or around Deyr-Ez-Zor.
>>
>>32681335
They also lost the majority of eastern Mosul in the last days, which might imply that they diverted a great number of troops from there to Dey-Ez-Zor too.
>>
>>32681335
>They're reportedly using a vast amount of child soldiers in the offensive

If that really is true then this offensive is probably one of their last big "things" they can pull off before running out of fighters.

That being said, whats a child soldier in that context anyway? Are we talking about teenagers (like 15-18?) or literal children like in africa (10-15?)
>>
>>32681350
The iraqi forces now control ALL of the bridges in Mosul, and the last places under ISIS control in east Mosul are the city park and a small suburb in the north.
The iraqis are already probing the terrain on the other side of the bridges,, but have not yet crossed the river.

Footage from Deir ezzor

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sI42cxxHXY0

Refreshing to see aiming, single shots, providing cover, staying behind cover as opposed to taking turns spraying from corners. Is there a core of SAA fighters bogged down in Deir that never gets rotated out?
>>
>>32700866
they probably learned a lot from being bogged down there for so long, if the SAA does it right and pass on the knowledge Syria might have a pretty competent army in the near future

Odd that Russia doesn't help solve the problem with air bombardment. The Russian air force apparently lacks the conventional throw weight for a sustained campaign. The best way would be to FOAB IS strongpoints at night.
>>
>>32700943
It was at the beginning when they had no idea how bad isis was to its prisoners.

Iraqi SOF pretty much considers the entire battle of Mosul to be payback as a result. Hence why they've been pushing hard and losing half of their initial fighting force as casualties to kill thousands of ISIS and take half of Mosul back.
>>
>>32701514
Range and payload. BTW all aircrew need sorties to stay proficient so there's no reason not to use heavy bombers in that role. If you don't land in Europe you won't be instantly seen by airplane spotters and posted on the internet.

I think without Russian and Syrian AF shitting on IS hard Deir would have been lost already. Both have been dropping a lot of tonnage, but the flipside is that IS have literally years of experience minimising their losses to air power.
Now the best case scenario short of turning everything in an entire region to dust seems to be that you can stop them pushing into specific areas by constantly bombing the hell out of it, but the rest of the time IS generally stay dispersed enough to deny any airforce nice grouped up targets to bomb, whether it's US/Ru/Sy doing the bombing.
>>
>>32704229
Dispersal reduces PGM effects nicely. PGMtards want to use golden bullets on Westernized forces but they aren't so good at killing dispersed, experienced infantry. I'd like to see Russia use their few remaining strategic bombers with conventional loads and copy US Arc Light strikes in SEA. Whole NVA units were obliterated by those around Khe Sanh.

SAA captured the East Ghouta town of Hazrama from Jaysh al Islam and forced Jaysh to retreat to Hawsh al Sahliyah. The SAA is now targeting the town of Nashabiyah, after previously asserting fire control over the area surrounding the town.

Also, B2's were used for the first time since 2011 over Libya in support of anti ISIL operations to the South-East of Sirte. The target was an ISIL training camp, and in addition to B2's MQ-9's with hellfires were present.

certain letters can't be joined.

any letter after Ra (third from left) has to be separate since there's no way to write ra and another letter. Same goes for waw (second from left) So there's instances where words are made up almost entirely of letters that are not joined together.

This is interesting, apparently the Baath loyalists still in Mosul have thrown their lot in with the Iraqis rather than ISIS, according to this. Including Al-Douris little army. Although this could just be them saving face for supporting ISIS for the last 3 years

update on the Libyan air raids the US carried out against ISIL training camps. The casualty figures have come in and apparently the US bombing killed an estimated 80+ ISIL fighters at the camp. These airstrikes witnessed the first use of the B2 in combat operations since 2011.

It's quite peculiar for the US to use strategic stealth bombers to hit training camps considering that they supplemented the air raid with MQ-9's.

Seems to be just a super small and minor town. Whats it importance?
>>
>>32713140
Everything the SAA captured in the last two years in Eastern Ghouta is just minor stuff. But it let the assad-fags fap to something. Same why every single hut taken by the kurds in the desert is celebrated as some huge success.

That said, it of course adds to each other and the pocket is shrinking all the time. If the current advances continue, then a lot of the small towns in the southeast are threatened. Same with the eastern attacks towards Douma.
But in the end, its Douma, Harasta, Zamalka, Irbin, Madyara, Jisreen and so on that counts. You know, the actual suburbs
>>
>>32713171
>That said, it of course adds to each other and the pocket is shrinking all the time.

too easy, it will force the rebels in the eastern part to retreat through a bottleneck area.
So at first, the SAA dont have to retake all by them selves (since the rebels leave by themselfes) and the SAA has the chance to mowe down retreatingh enemies - this picture in the link fits very well to the situation and how to understand the more or less major blow to rebels defensives:
