You can get a lot of shotgun for $500, unless you pick Remington. You want a stock and decent capacity as a minimum. Imports have limited magazine sizes if you pick foreign. Mossberg is the easy go-to (prepare for a hundred 590/Mav 88 suggestions), but you can look at something like CZ-USA for a stout shotgun with lots of options.

Like most of the people here, used Mossberg 500 or Maverick 88. The shotgun needs to have a stock. No. 4 buckshot is good for indoor ranges and is powerful enough to stop someone. 00 buckshot is more powerful and can be used at longer ranges. Make sure you have a light on your shotgun.

Like the guy who suggested getting good locks, do it. After buying your shotgun, get some good locks, motion sensor exterior lights all around every entryway, and even if you can't afford an alrm, go on Amazon and buy stickers and a yard sign that says you have one. Make your house as uninviting as possible and hell on earth if someone decides to break in anyway.
