Can you guys give me the scoop on this round? The good? The bad?
>>
Fudd round incarnate.

Kills deer extra dead though

It's basically 7.62x39.
>>
>>32627771
It's basically an American 7.62x39.

Can reliably kill anything up to elk.
>>
>>32627771
It's a 7.62 x 39 that isn't slowed down by brush as much.

Get a brushgun in 30 30. Small things won't bother big heavy boolet. But remember not very long range.

/k/ is a bunch of memeing tacfags most of whom don't actually own a gun. Don't listen to them.
>>
hotter than 7.62x39 but uses round nose bullets because of tubegats
>>
>>32627923
your mom's a meme
>>
>>32627948
Quit regurgitating this bullshit. It might be the closest comparable hunting round, but 30-30 has quite a bit more power.
>>
>>32627771
It's an intermediate 30 caliber cartridge that performs similarly to the .30-06 except that it has slightly less stopping power and shorter maximum effective range (around 300 yards tops). It's a popular sporting caliber and typically caters to brush guns (but some bolt actions do exist). Outside of handgun cartridges, .30-30 WIN is the definitive lever gun cartridge. The rounded nose of the projectile was a safety precaution because of a lever-action's tube magazine.

It's cheap to procure and effective enough for killing anything in the lower 48 states, which makes it popular and accessible. It should be noted though that .30-06 will out perform the .30-30 in all categories. At that point it becomes generally a choice between if you want a shorter ranged, easy to carry trail carbine or something that can hit things farther away. There are some niche gun models like the Marlin XLR series that are supposedly able to throw .30-30 farther and more accurately but you lose portability due to the extended barrel.

It is a rimmed, flat-nose cartridge from a bygone era. It exists today bc gun's chambered for it still exist. Winchester made roughly 7 million model 94's and Marlin made roughly 6.5 million 336's. Almost all of these are chambered in 30-30, and the cartridge still persists for the sole purpose of feedings these rifles in addition to a few other models that also hosted it. It is the deer's arch nemesis, the Fudd's best friend, and a living fossil.
>>
>>32628144

/k/ is no better then fudds and their love of 30-06 when it comes to the turdy turdy is the same as 7.62x39 meme

fuckin no guns. 30-30 has a hell of alot more power.

This. I never understood that. It's not even close energy wise.

It's funny that /k/ will usually slam .30-30 but won't say much about 7.62x54R which is about as old and persists also for the reason that there's a shit ton of rifles that are chambered in it.

At least it's still a fairly common round, unlike, say, .35 Rem like the rifle I inherited.
>>

I think they still produce it but it is pricey. Check out Sportsman's guide.
>>

$30 a box at Gander. And Leverevolution's actually the cheapest stuff.

Maybe $22 from the cheapest online on Ammoseek.

>>
>>32629525
$0.10 for powder, $0.14 for a cast bullet, $0.03 for a primer. it's not like shooting 38-55 is expensive or anything.
>>
>>32627771

I'm a young man who has killed and recovered 14 deer, some of them scoreable bucks.

I've mostly done it with 7mm magnum, .243 Win and .308 Win.

But now I'm getting bored with the banality of knocking them down with typical guns. Hell, last year I killed one with a Smith hand ejector just to say I did.

Thinking of getting a 30-30 or .35 Rem and hunting cowboy style.
>>
>>32629579

You can always take up hunting mountain lions and bobcats and pretend to be Jim Corbett.
>>
>>32629285
The difference is that 54r is $10 a box whereas .30-30 is usually significantly more expensive.
>>
>>32628303

how does it stack up against .308?
>>
>>32629208
Got to try one of these awhile back, nice gun.
Good weight, recoil, and general feel. I don't really like the mags though, and the sights either.
>>
>>32629720
>how does it stack up against .308?
assuming you mean .308 Winchester, it doesn't. .308 Win holds about 8 grains of H2O more, 30-30 was intended to headspace off the rim rather than the shoulder, and most 30-30 guns require round-nose bullets which have shit for BC.

you could make a decent 30-30 but why?
>>
>>32627771
The Good: It kills things dead.
The Bad: It's kind of obsolete, and a waste of cartridge space for it's size/power/muzzle-velocity.
>>
>>32629906
>and most 30-30 guns require round-nose bullets which have shit for BC.
You can use flex-tip in those, you know.
>>
30-30 has identical ballistics to 22lr

its good out to 100 yards and then falls like a brick
>>
>>32629931
>You can use flex-tip in those, you know.
which deform at high velocity. Hornady had to reformulate the plastic they use for tips on V/A-Max bullets because of deformation caused by heat at high velocity. softer is not an answer.
>>
>>32629631
Yeah, but good luck finding cheap brass
>>
>>32630054
$0.50 a piece for Starline. it's straight case and pressure drops quick. you'll get probably 5-10 reloads out before you need to re-anneal the brass. even if you chuck them at 5 and buy new, that's $0.10 per round for brass. we're now at a grand total of $0.37/rd, including throwing perfectly good brass in the garbage.
>>
>>32629407
Because people like it.
>>
>>32628303

>similar to .30-06

It runs like what, 600fps slower with a bullet of equivalent weight, which always has to be RN, thus having a poor ballistic coefficient

Have I ever told you about the .30 carbine round? Let me redpill you, it's basically a .300 RUM

I have a 30-30 Marling that I got for free. It's a fun gun and a fun round to shoot but it's about $1/round and I don't hunt so I don't use it much. I keep it though in case the happening happens .
>>
>>32630422
>really rare guns with no demand
>>
Similar ballistics to 7.62x39. At least with x39, you get ball ammo that cheap to shoot. nearly all .30-30 is a soft point which is about a buck a round across the board.

If you want a hunting lever action, go with .30-30. Want something to hunt with and shoot for fun, go with something in 7.62x39. AK, SKS, Mini 30
>>
>>32630422
>>32631677

>>
>>32633169
Which uses a detachable box magazine, allowing for standard spitzers, and thus making leverev flex-tips unnecessary.
>>
>>32632064
Why is he wrong?

Just going by Wikipedia it seems .30-30 has about 100 ft-lbs lower muzzle energy which isn't particularly significant when they're both hovering around 2000 ft-lbs. Naturally terminal ballistics will be different but he doesn't seem wrong enough to justify a memeing.
>>
>>32633189

He was saying that the levergun itself isn't in those rounds and it seemed implied that he thought there were none, I was just bringing it up.

Booty-head.
>>
>>32633022

Do it. I'll tell ya something you'll like to hear: Arizona has unlimited cougar tags.
>>
>>32627771 The good: cheap, readily available (find it at Walmart) good enough for white tail out to 150 yds, good in the brush. The bad: Not so good past 150 yds, plenty of other common calibers that do the same job better, especially at longer ranges.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8-L3PMtID0

it's old fashioned but still pretty potent.
>>
>>32633274
>Why is he wrong?
Ok, let me look at the wiki stats alone.
I'll do 150gr(or heavier) 30-30, which is probably the most popular weights for 30-30 hunting.
That's more like 350ft lbs.

Nobody's posted my baby yet? .30-30 not by choice but this was a gift. Does fine as a hunting rifle and is more managable/enjoyable to shoot than my .270 bolt action.
>>
>>32627771
>The good?
Some people like lever & cowboy guns.

If you want some lower end 30cal plinking, you should really be using 762x39 since it's about 1/3rd the price.
