A pistol is a pistol, and it'll be sure to work in an emergency, and for target shooting, but for the capacity, you can get something a lot smaller, and for the size, you can get a lot more capacity.

It depends on your needs, 8rds of 9mm is effective for most peoples requirements in a defensive arm. They tend to accurate and reliable but at bulky and don't conceal very comfortably. If it is all you have it is better than nothing although I would recommend upgrading to something less valuable, a glock can be had for $375 or less and will carry more comfortably and give you a little more thantwice the capacity of the p38.

I'm thinking about getting a threaded barrel for mine since they're such great suppressor hosts. Standard pressure 9mm is naturally subsonic out of a barrel length that short and the ""fixed"" barrel works well with suppressors.

Buy a common P1, double stack here and convert her into a P1K, there are websites that offer conversions, all you need is money

If it's all you have ATM, then yes, you could do worse. It was one of the best combat pistols in service during WW2 in terms of sights, controls and design.

8 rounds of defensive cartridges in a full size pistol isn't ideal but it will do the job well.
