Hey /k/, what do you all think of 7.62x39mm? What benefits does the caliber offer in practical applications like hunting, pest control, defense, and cost effectiveness?
Do 5.45 or 5.56 have any more benefit?
>>
>>32616993

5.45 and 5.56 both have better ballistics. They'll fly straighter, go farther, and be more precise than the best 7.62x39 ever will be.

7.62x39 however is a larger round that hits harder. A proper soft point round or polymer tipped round can take deer while 5.45 and 5.56 could take smaller game.

There is a lot more that could be said but a simple google search will be much faster and more concise.
>>
>What does /k/ think of it
Dunno, what does /k/ think of it

>What benefits does it offer
Better for larger game

>Which has more benefit
I think per round cost is comparable between the two. It is cheaper and easier to get a functional platform that shoots 7.62x39 than it is one that shoots 5.56. But the difference is 200 bucks at absolute worst.

Both overpenetrate like the dickens in a HD scenario.

7.62x39 drops like a brick compared to 5.56, ballistically speaking.

All depends on what your budget is, and what you're trying to do specifically. And if you like the look of ancient slavshit or evil black 'salt rifles better.

5.56 and 5.45 can take deer fine with the right projectile. The only notable thing that 7.62x39 does better is barrier penetration.
>>
>>32616993

you cant hunt with .22's or in 5.45's case .21 caliber in many states.

Don't some states / counties still outlaw 5.56 for hunting? Some of them are of the opinion it's not strong enough to take deer.

On the other hand, M855 is pretty kickass at general barrier penetration while m193 can penetrate Level III steel plates.

Really depends what he wants to do with it I guess.

Ohio has a funky law where we can only use straight walled cartridges for hunting, so they'd all be banned here.
>>
5.56 is of cuck round for american pig

7,62 fly straight like arrow and pierce all object and enemy to be defeated
>>
>>32617246
Thats true. In indiana we cant use 5.56 because its supposed to be inhumane but we couldnt use 30 cals until this year because theyre supposed to be too high powered.
>>
I think it's a fantastic round. A little out-dated but still, a very very great round.

It's fantastic in all of those areas but HD. Might over penetrate if you hit a wall. I've killed many many coyote and hogs with just one round of 7.62x39.

Cost effectiveness -- you will find no cheaper intermediate rifle caliber than 7.62x39. Dirt cheap. Loads of bang. Loads of fun. Once I month, I buy 1,000 rounds for just $200 from the LGS. Online I've seen the same for about $220.

5.45 and 5.56 are very fantastic rounds for the modern age. 5.56 is the superior HD round out of all of them. 5.45 has great ballistics out of all of them. 7.62 is simply bigger and cheaper than all of them.
Also, real metal AK magazines (not Korean) are insanely cheap compared to 5.45 and some 5.56 mags. 5.45 can be a bitch to find at a decent price but it's there.
My vote is for 7.62x39. I own rifles in all three and my AKM definitely sees more use than all of them, simply because of price alone.

Also, 7.62x39 is fucking amazing through an SBR, only losing 200-300 FPS. 5.56 is absolutely awful, ballistically through a SBR. You might as well be using an air soft gun with BB's that hit a little harder.
>>
>>32617327

>Can't use 5.56 because it's not strong enough
>Couldn't use .30-06, arguably the most popular deer hunting cartridge in the USA, because it's too powerful

What the hell did you people hunt with then?
>>
>>32616993
It's my favorite cartridge to shoot, always puts a smile on my face.

That said, 5.56 and 5.45 are both superior at ranges beyond 300 meters due to a flatter ballistic trajectory.
>>
>>32617390
>Some cartridges legal for deer hunting include the .357 Magnum, .38-.40 Winchester, .41 Magnum, .41 Special, .44 Magnum, .44 Special, .44-.40 Winchester, .45 Colt, .454 Casull, .458 SOCOM, .475 Linebaugh, .480 Ruger, .50 Action Express, .500 S&W, .460 Smith & Wesson, .450 Bushmaster, and .50 Beowulf.

All you need to know:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwL_o2MvMbk

People who say it drops like a brick, don't exactly tell you that happens past 300m. And with most AK's not having a side rail for optics, its kind of a moot point.

7.62x39 is probably damn near the cheapest of the bunch, and steelcase will function properly in a AK, unlike steelcase in a AR. Gives a nice thump to the shoulder, but not too hard that you would leave the range after a whole day with a sore collarbone. Wouldn't recommend it for HD if you live in an apartment complex.
>>
>>32617433
5.45, 5.56, and 7.62x39 are all within maybe 2cpr in price for steelcase, with 5.56 having the cheapest brass ammo. Modern non-shit tier ARs also have no problems with steel.

Due to the projectile weight it's fantastic for fighting in dense foliage, one of the problems that the 5.56 round ran into in vietnam was its low weight and how the round became erratic after striking the undergrowth of the jungle.

7.62 is a fine round for an SBR, but muzzle flash is a motherfucker.
